My mind is wandering as I am cooking dinner for Uncle Jasper and myself. This has been happening a lot more recently. I'm struggling with the anniversary coming up.I cannot believe next month will mark ten years since that awful night. That means we have been running for our lives for almost ten years. We did everything to hide the fact that I survived that night. We changed our names, I now go by Isabella Smith and Uncle Jasper is now James Smith. Everyone believes he is my father. We are living in the human world and moving as much as possible. I have lived in twenty-one different states in the past ten years. This house is the one we have lived in the longest. We have been here seven months and that’s only because I am no longer in school. As a child it was suspicious for me not to go to school but it was always a risk of someone recognizing me. It was rare to run into a wolf at a human school, but it happened sometimes and we would quickly move. I graduated a year early and decided not to go to college because it was too much of a risk. Soon my life will change and it will be hard to hide that I am a royal.
That is another thing that saved me over the years from detection. My scent and aura will not be present as royal until I am of age. The Moon Goddess designed it this way in case of a situation like this and it has helped us. Uncle Jasper has not been as lucky, he is a Royal Prince since he was my father's younger brother. He has been taking an elixir once a month for the past ten years to suppress his wolf and aura to hide. Though it worked, it has an effect on those that use it, since our wolf is one half of our soul and it cuts us off from that part. Though he can still communicate with his wolf, it is not the same. The other issue is he has not been able to let his wolf out and shift since that night and we don't know if he will ever be able to again. I will not be able to use the elixir since I am technically Queen. My aura will be too strong and we don't know what kind of side effect this will have on me. Therefore, we have come to the conclusion that we won't use the elixir, so on my eighteenth birthday all bets are off and everyone will know who I am.
I am just glad I was able to stay off the radar of the Grand Alpha until now. Though he never found my body, he also never found signs that I had survived and didn't really look for me. He did not know about the escape hatch and he thought everyone was killed in the explosion. This made it possible so I could train and prepare to take back my throne. Uncle Jasper has been training me for everything, whether it is combat, royal etiquette or just politics in general. I have been preparing since I was born to be Queen but we never thought I would have to fight to even sit on the throne.
Though our world and the human world are the same, humans do not know we exist and we typically live separate from human societies. Our cities are protected by wards gifted to us by the Moon Goddess, so we do not have to hide our true nature, our wolves can run free. Each city has an alpha but the capital city is ruled by the royal family, or at least it was before the attack on the palace.
My family is directly descended from the Moon Goddess herself, hence us being blessed by her, but most do not know that. Most of our society just believes we are the alphas of all alphas, therefore, royals because we are stronger, not because we are blessed by our bloodline. Our bloodline has been tasked with maintaining our secret, protecting our society, and making sure the wards hold. When the attack killed off everyone else in our family, that role fell to Jasper and myself, but since we have been living in human society, the wards have become weak. Right now, the only thing holding them in place is Jasper, but his essence is tainted by the elixir, so the wards are failing. We need to go back when I turn eighteen so that I can bless them with my blood and strengthen them with my wolf.
It will be risky to go back, but Jasper has been planning the trip for the past couple of months. He has been communicating with others on the inside that have pledged to help us when we arrive. We plan to enter the city undetected and fix the wards. Once that is done, we can worry about getting my throne back. I just hope those that supported my parents will support me.
I am startled out of my thoughts by Jasper entering through the back door.
He walks up and kisses me on the top of my head, “Hi sweetie, how is my princess today?”
I roll my eyes at him because to everyone else it's just a cute pet name, but to us it's an inside joke. “Good, just worried about next week. Do you think I’ll make a good queen?”
He smiles and gives me a reassuring hug, saying “of course you will and I will be right there with you every step of the way to make sure of it. I am so proud of the woman you have become and your parents would be too.”
I could feel my cheeks heat and I hugged him back, “thanks I really needed to hear that.”
