As I walked into the living room, I saw Jake and Thobile chatting over breakfast. I poured myself a cup of coffee and sat down next to them. Me: Morning, guys. Thobile: Good morning, dear. How are you feeling today? Me: I'm okay, thanks. Jake: (smiling) You look a little down. What's wrong? Me: (sighing) I just didn't get much sleep last night. I was thinking about Austin a lot. Thobile: (laughing) Oh, dear. You're really smitten with him, aren't you? Me: (blushing) I guess so. I just can't stop thinking about him. Jake: (smiling) Well, maybe you'll see him again soon. Me: (smiling) Yeah, maybe. Just then, the doorbell rang. Thobile got up to answer it, and I heard her talking to someone in the hallway. A few minutes later, she walked back into the kitchen with Austin and his girlfriend, Linda. Thobile: Everyone, this is Linda. She's Austin's girlfriend. Me: (surprised) Oh, hi. Linda: (smiling) Hi. So, you're the girl who's been staying here? Me: (nervously) Yeah, that's me. Linda: (smiling) It's nice to meet you. I've heard a lot about you. Me: (curiously) Really? What have you heard? Linda: (smiling) Oh, just that you're a singer and you're really good. Me: (smiling) Thanks. That's nice of you to say. Austin: (smiling) So, Candice, how are you doing today? Me: (nervously) I'm doing okay, thanks. How about you? Austin: (smiling) I'm doing great, thanks. So, Candice, I've been thinking... Me: (curiously) What about? Austin: (smiling) Well, I know you're having a tough time with your parents and all, so I was thinking... maybe I could adopt you. Me: (surprised) What? You want to adopt me? Austin: (smiling) Yeah. I think it could be really good for both of us. You need a place to stay, and I have a big house with plenty of room. Me: (confused) But... why? I don't understand. Austin: (smiling) Like I said, I think it could be good for both of us. And I've always wanted to be a father. Me: (still confused) But... I'm not a child. I'm 18 years old. Austin: (laughing) I know that. But I just think it would be a good idea. Linda: (rolling her eyes) Oh, spare us the details, Austin. (turning to me) So, Candice, I hear you're quite the singer. (her tone was condescending and mocking) Me: (nervously) Yeah, I sing a little. Linda: (smirking) Oh, I'm sure you do. (turning to Austin) You know, Austin, I don't think this is a good idea. She's just going to be a burden on you. Me: (defensively) Hey, I'm not a burden! I can take care of myself. Linda: (laughing) Oh, really? Then why are you living with these people? Me: (angrily) That's none of your business! Austin: (calmly) Okay, okay, let's not fight. Linda, I think this could be a good thing. And Candice, I'm not trying to insult you. I just want to help. Me: (still angry) Whatever. I don't need your help. Linda: (smirking) Oh, I think you do. You need all the help you can get. Thobile: (interrupting) Okay, that's enough. Linda, you need to leave. Now. Linda: (smiling) Fine. I'll leave. But this isn't over. (she stormed out of the house, slamming the door behind her) Austin: (sighing) I'm sorry about that. She can be a bit... much sometimes. Me: (angrily) A bit much? She's a total b***h! Austin: (laughing) Well, maybe. But she's not that bad once you get to know her. Me: (incredulously) You're kidding, right? Austin: (smiling) No, I'm not. And I think you should come with me. I'll show you my house and we can talk more about this adoption thing. I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled in the pit of my stomach. The next morning, I woke up early and got dressed, my mind racing with thoughts of what the day might bring. I had barely eaten any breakfast when I heard a knock at the door. It was 10 am on the dot. Me: (nervously) Coming! (I opened the door to find Austin standing there, looking handsome and confident as always) Austin: (smiling) Ready to go? Me: (nervously) Yeah, I guess so. (I grabbed my purse and followed him out the door) As we drove to the courthouse, I couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. What were we doing? And why did I get the feeling that Austin was hiding something from me? When we arrived at the courthouse, Austin led me to a small room in the back. There was a man waiting for us, dressed in a suit and holding a clipboard. Man: (smiling) Hi, I'm Mr. Smith. Austin has asked me to help with the adoption process. Me: (nervously) Oh, hi. I'm Candice. Mr. Smith: (smiling) Nice to meet you, Candice. And this is my colleague, Ms. Johnson. Ms. Johnson: (smiling) Hi, Candice. We'll be helping with the adoption process today. Me: (confused) I've never been through an adoption process before. What can I expect? Mr. Smith: (smiling) Don't worry, it's quite simple. We just need to fill out some paperwork and answer a few questions. Me: (nervously) Okay... As we began the paperwork, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and nervousness. I had no idea what to expect, but Austin seemed to know what he was doing, and he was being very patient with me. After what felt like hours of paperwork, Mr. Smith and Ms. Johnson finally finished. Mr. Smith: (smiling) And that's it! You're all done. Me: (relieved) Really? That's it? Ms. Johnson: (smiling) Yes, that's it. Now, Austin, you need to sign this last paper. Austin: (smiling) Okay... (he took the paper and signed it) Mr. Smith: (smiling) And that's it! You're officially... (he paused and looked at Ms. Johnson, who nodded) ...taken care of. Me: (confused) What does that mean? Mr. Smith: (smiling) It means that Austin is now your... (he paused again) ...legal guardian. Me: (relieved) Oh, okay. That makes sense. But as I looked at Austin, I couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't quite right. But I pushed the thought aside and smiled at him. Me: (smiling) Thanks, Austin. This means a lot to me. Austin: (smiling) No problem, Candice. I'm happy to help. As we walked out of the office, Austin led me to his car. Me: (excitedly) So, what now? Do I get to see my new room? Austin: (smiling) Yeah, we'll head back to my place now. Me: (curiously) Is it far? Austin: (smiling) No, it's just a few minutes away. As we drove, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and nervousness. I had no idea what to expect, but I was eager to see my new home. When we arrived at the house, Austin pulled into the driveway and turned off the engine. Me: (excitedly) We're here! Austin: (smiling) Yeah, we are. Let's go inside. As we walked towards the front door, I noticed that it was decorated with balloons and a big banner that read "Welcome Home, Candice!" Me: (surprised) What's going on? Austin: (smiling) Just a little surprise. Go ahead and open the door. I opened the door and was greeted by a group of people yelling "Surprise!" I was shocked to see Linda and her friends, as well as Austin's friends, all standing in the living room with big smiles on their faces. Me: (shocked) What is this? Linda: (smiling) We wanted to throw you a welcome party, Candice! We're so glad you're joining our family. I was taken aback by the party and the fact that Linda was being so nice to me. I looked at Austin, who was smiling and nodding at me. Me: (nervously) Thanks, guys. This is really sweet of you. The group cheered and started chanting my name. I blushed and smiled, feeling a little overwhelmed by all the attention. As we partied and had fun, I couldn't help but feel a little suspicious. Why was Linda being so nice to me all of a sudden? And why did Austin's friends seem so... familiar? I pushed the thoughts aside and tried to enjoy the party. But the feeling of unease lingered in the back of my mind.
