"There are multiple reasons why I shouldn't leave the family's business to my capo, but I know you'll never let me recite those reasons. I think I should just keep my mouth shut and let you take the reins while I handle the reins on the other side of the globe, Steph."
I was finishing up the papers I was signing before I left for Asia in a few days. Stephanie was the one who was going to be left in charge of all my transactions in the mafia world, while I was going to handle the situation in Asia. We were both at the main mansion of the De Angelo family, and Stephanie was on the other side of my office trying to arrange the folders that I would need for the meeting in Asia.
"Morozova said that the venue for the meetings would be in Singapore, Japan, and Beijing in China. I know you speak all languages that would possibly be used there, but never forget your etiquette, boss. The Asians are very strict when it comes to table manners in any kind of table."
"Don't worry about me, Steph, you know that I can handle this. You just need to trust me that I would be as professional as possible, and not pick up women along the way. Unless the woman chooses to be picked by me of course, then who am I to turn down an offer from a beautiful lady?."
I earned a deep and exasperated sigh from my Capo, and I knew if I wasn't her Don, I would have taken a bullet somewhere in my body. I knew I stressed her enough to make her playful, and somehow, stressing her as always worth it. This woman was tough as nails, and no one can change my mind.
“I can’t believe that I’m letting you go there without my help. I trust you, but there are times that I keep forgetting how capable you are of running this whole business alone. I don't read the bible much, but based on how tame you become around a woman I’m just worried that we might find a bathsheba for the De Angelo family’s king David.”
“Don’t worry, Steph, a woman would never cause me to let my company fall to the ground. All of us have worked hard to keep both the De Angelo empire and the Alpha and Omega group of companies to be as successful as they are now. I won’t let anything keep me away from certain success. I have lost too many lives and time for me to be distracted so easily. Let me be playful in the business world, so my competitors would at least make the competition fun.”
“Alright, fine, but you have to make a meeting and announce to the heads of the entire family about your temporary absence physically, so that the decimation of tasks would still be smooth. We need to make sure that none of the other Mafia families would know that our boss is out in Asia with only minimum security.”
“I have Bruno and five of the best members in the entire asassination squad led by Alberto and Fernando. Fred and George are also my private bodyguards, and three of your best women soldiers. I am more than protected, and I’m sure that you’re not underestimating my capabilities to fight. You know that I’m not just a simple mafia boss, because I am an assassin as much as I am the Don of the De Angelo family.”
Steph smiled at my boldness and confidence in the ability of our men and women in the family. By the look in her eyes, I knew that this trip in Asia would not be as fun as the trips Stephanie would be doing in the mafia world as the temporary Godmother of the family.
A few minutes later, Stephanie stood up and prepared to leave the room to sleep after preparing all the files, but she stopped in the middle of the room and looked at me. We looked at each other for a few seconds, and a smile crossed both our faces.
It was one of these moments that I truly respect the kind of friend Stephanie is. She's like a sister to me, and the smile we both shared was a sort of temporary goodbye physically. We shared those smiles when we would go on separate missions as assassins back in the past.
"Seeing you prepare to leave for Asia makes me feel like we're on one of those separate missions back in the day. You better go home safe and finish your mission flawlessly, my friend. You're not just going as an assassin now, but you're going as Michael De Angelo, King of the Italian mafia, and the new rising multi-millionaire in Italy."
I laughed hard, but the laughter was out of fondness and pride in having a capo like her. I nodded, and I saw a glimpse of pride and hope in her eyes. Everytime that we did this, I was confident that the two of us would go back alive and well.
I took a deep breath and looked at her as she left the room. There was now silence, and I felt like I was about to go to war and I needed to keep myself alive and well. My smile fell when a message from Morozova was sent to me through email.
The email she sent me made my blood boil, and I felt like I was going to destroy my laptop at any given moment. My hands turned into fists, and I read the email multiple times.
"Damien Kane Mondragon is going to be at the meeting. Make sure that you prepare yourself to keep your company in your hands. A little bird told me that the Dragon is planning on killing Italy's rising king of the angels. Ironic, is it? Anyway, make sure you bring your best, Mr. Michael De Angelo, I feel a war preparing to erupt."
Another email came, and it was from the head of the investigation department of the De Angelo family. I felt my anger rise higher, and at this point, I was begging myself not to destroy the entire room. I looked away to try and control my emotions, and read the email again.
"Boss, I have some information regarding your missing past, and it turns out, in the places that you were raised as a child, none of the people there knows you. It seems as though the people that knew you have mysteriously disappeared. There are locals that remember you, but all of them said that they only remember you as two people who are traveling. None could give anything else about you or your brother. Also, in the schools where you studied, your records have been erased the day after you left the place. It was like there was someone to erase your every move. Unfortunately, the investigation has reached a dead end, but we will keep looking."
I was now confused, and I sat at the floor heavily as I forced myself not to scream in frustration. I felt like I was losing my mind, and I looked at the gun beside my table. A twisted thought came to mind, and I pointed the gun on my head and closed my eyes. I pulled the trigger and the sound of the bullet was deafening.
