Mrs Jin is on the line

LYRA’S POV I walked home with my thoughts, contemplating the best way to handle the situation with Jasper. I hated the side of me that enjoyed his earlier taunts and mentally slapped myself each time I slipped into that line of thought. My heart belonged to Rowan. I couldn’t let my body and this darned mate bond trick me into doing something I’d regret. My body belonged to Rowan. I kept myself for him even when I didn’t know he was my mate. A part of me knew he was destined to be mine, even as a young girl. If he was being honest to himself, he knew it too, the irreversible bond we shared. The night was a testament that we would always be better together. Hence, I need to get Jasper out of the way as soon as possible. I got into the house at midnight. The light on the front porch was turned off and I figured they had all gone to sleep. I let myself in with the spare key and headed towards my room when I saw the lights in the kitchen. I slowed my steps, picked up the nearest lamp and made my way to the kitchen, ready to find the i***t who thought it wise to break into the Alpha’s house. I headed to the kitchen with slow steps, and just before I entered the kitchen, I felt a searing pain from my toe. I f*****g stubbed my toe. I lost my balance from the impact and broke the lamp. Creating a huge ruckus that if there were a freaking burglar in the house, they’d be alerted and on the run. I got off the floor, expertly navigating through the broken chards on the floor until lights suddenly flooded the area. I looked up and found my adoptive mother looking at me with confusion and shock written on her face. “Lyra...” She muttered, helping me up, “I didn’t hear you drive in.” I felt embarrassed being caught in such a disgraceful manner. “I walked,” I say, looking at the mess. “I thought there was a burglar.” “Oh dear...” Mother said with understanding. “I’ll just clean this up,” I said and got to the job, going through the familiar cycle of cleaning up the mess, one I was usually saddled with whenever the boys came around as a young girl. I cleared the area, ready to call it a day when Mother spoke. “You didn’t tell me about your studies in the human world.” She squeaked and I stopped in my tracks. “I heard it’s not easy to study medicine over there.” She quizzed, pouring herself a cup of water. “Would you like some?” I shook my head at her offer. Things were strained between us following her not-so-discreet reaction to my return. As well as Dad’s. Ever since the day I was sent away from the pack to cover the scandal, they hadn’t called me one day. It hurt so much because I’d been so close to Rowan’s mother. She always regarded me as the daughter she never had and yet she was quick to send me away for being mated to the love of my life. Their actions felt like a betrayal. Despite my bleak feelings, I managed to smile as I responded. “Medicine is a taxing course.” Her eyes widened as though she didn’t expect me to answer. “I spent the better part of the last seven years studying like my life depended on it.” We shared a strained smile and she nodded. “I always knew you’d do well.” She took a sip of her cup. “Perhaps you could practice with the pack doctors, lend them some knowledge.” My smile was stiff as I made a non-committal sound. “I’ll head on to my room, now,” I announced a beat after. It was clear that the conversation was headed nowhere. “Oh...yeah, of course! I’ll just, finish up here..” Luna Kelly said, looking everywhere but at me. I walked away from the kitchen, deciding to put us out of our misery and headed to my room. LUNA KELLY’S POV (ROWAN’S MOTHER) I watched my daughter climb the stairs and my heart wrenched. Things were not the same with us. Lyra was the perfect child. I loved and regarded her as my daughter, as did my husband, Jone. I clearly remembered the day Rowan found her in the woods after straying away from the bushes. He returned with Little Lyra in his hands, worried sick for the little stranger he found. That day was a hard day for me as I got the news I wouldn’t be able to conceive or bear any more children due to some complications at Rowan’s birth. Lyra came as a consolation. The daughter I never had. I was glad to take her in and raise her as mine with the support of my husband and child. They both loved her dearly, especially Rowan. They both grew up with love and were inseparable as twins until that fateful night when she turned eighteen. That dreaded night that revealed she was Rowan’s mate. Her brother’s mate. It was an abomination. One that got tongues wagging. I couldn’t let Rowan be put in that situation so we made a decision. I remembered the hurt on Rowan’s face as we told him what must be done, and Lyra’s devastation when she got rejected and sent to study medicine in the human world while we died down things in the pack for damage control. Rowan was the next Alpha. We couldn’t allow anything to soil his reputation or lose the people’s trust. It was a tough decision, but a necessary one. I only hoped that Lyra would get over it someday and we could be the family we used to be. “Luna...” I heard a familiar voice say from the other end of the room. It was Magaret. The housekeeper. “Did you need something? You should have called me.” I raised my hand, signalling it was fine. “I just wanted some water.” My eyes narrowed at my phone in her hand. “Is there a problem?” “Mrs Jin is on the line.” She announced and was stunned. Jin was Lyra’s stepmother. Lilith’s mother. A few years after I adopted Lyra, she showed up with Lyra’s biological father who claimed ownership of the child with a bullshit explanation of how his mistress abandoned little Lyra and disappeared after his union with Jin, Lilith’s mother. The happiness in Jin’s eyes when my husband and I laid claim to Lyra could not be missed. They didn’t want her. Nevertheless, they wanted to be a part of the family, forcing us to form a cordial relationship with their pack. “What is it?” I said as soon as the line connected. “Lyra returned.” Her voice was anything but excited. “Why?” “I don’t owe you an explanation on why my daughter returned home.” I gritted, feeling anger brew within me. “Of course you don’t.” Jin’s tone was anything but remorseful. “I guess you’ve seen the videos of them making rounds?” “What video?” “I’ll send it to you.” A message dinged into the phone while the call connected. “I’ll advise you to get your daughter away from your son. It’s not a good look.” Jin ended the call before I could speak. Shaking with irritation, I pulled open the message and it was a video of Rowan and Lyra playing snooker. The video was expertly taken and one would think they were in an abominable relationship. Lyra looked smitten as Rowan helped her play, while someone videoed them. I deleted the video and handed the phone to Margaret with a frown. “Do you need something else?” “You can retire to bed,” I said, finished the glass of water and made my way to bed with my brains churning on the next line of action. “I couldn't let them get back together. Not again. I need to do something fast.”
