I heard noises from the doorstep. The whole room was filled with perfume as I heard loud noises. The sitting room was large, the doorstep was far away from the living room. And the dining was another room far away from the sitting room.
I stood up and adjusted my gown before making my way to the door.
“You!” I heard a familiar voice, Anne’s voice.
I swallowed a lump in my throat when I saw her. She looked no different. She still looked modern as always. She wore a pink suit, with white heels.
"What are you doing here” her eyes went to my left hand, where my diamond ring was perfectly placed in my ring finger. She looked disappointed, I just walked to back to the living room.
"So you guys should join us for dinner” I said and walked to the dining table. Everything was confusing me. Henry didn’t act like he knew me from anywhere, he didn’t even look shocked to see me.
Anne on the other hand looked disappointed. She still acted like the semibitch she is but her presence scared me. She could say the truth any time.
When dinner was done and everyone was already in their rooms, I took that chance to go and talk to Anne.
....
Her room was very far from mine, it was next to Emily’s room. I knocked on the door, and it was opened in no time.
“Hi…Molly” she folded her arms and smirked.
"Can I talk to you?” I said and walked in.
"What is left to talk about Emily. You are the wife of my sons best friend and we are here to pay you guys a visit” She said and smirked again.
I rolled my eyes and said, “Not that. What happened to Henry he didn’t even act as if he knew me from anywhere”
“If you wanted to know what really happened, you would have stayed. It’s all your fault he’s in this condition” She began to cry. She has always been a kind person, but she has always been an asshole too sometimes. And I had never seen her cry like that before.
"Anne this isn’t my fault. It’s all you and my mom’s fault that I’m in this house, that I’m wearing this ring” I wanted to cry too, but I didn’t want her to see me as weak.
“Please I hope you aren’t here to ruin my life like you did 14 years ago”
“Wait, your hubby doesn’t even know about this?” I nodded in the affirmative.
"Anne” I held her hand. “You have always been the wicked and sometimes kind mother I’ve always wished for. I don’t have anything to do with Henry thanks to you and my mom.”
She let go of my hand. “So you’re playing the blame game now”
I didn’t answer and made my way to the doorstep. “Anne please I don’t want anyone to hear about what happened 14 years ago. I know you hate me but please. Let’s act normally, and like nothing happened” I said and left the room, closing the door behind me.
I didn’t know if she answered or not but at least I tried to. I heard some noises coming from the next room, Emily’s room.
I heard a scream which made me even more curious, more terrified. I tried opening the door, but it won’t budge.
"Ouch!” I heard someone scream. It was loud, but it wasn’t from anywhere closer. I got more concerned about the scream than Emily. My mind drifted from Emily and wandered to the scream.
I went downstairs when I heard another scream. The closer I got to the kitchen, the louder the scream got.
“Ouch!” I heard another scream. I opened the door to the kitchen, and saw Henry there.
He was standing at the far end of the room, holding his wrist. “Um…is everything fine?” I said as I walked closer.
"Sorry it’s an habit of mine, I just don't know why I wake up every midnight to eat” He said.
“No its fine” I tried not to remember all the moments we’ve had because of this habit.
I noticed the cut on his wrist, it wasn’t small at all. “Did you try to slit your wrist?” I started to panic and held his wrist.
“No why would I? I wanted to cook and the knife…it is a long story” He said. I went straight to the cupboard, that was where all things fist aid was kept. It was always placed in the kitchen and some other places that was very accident prone.
“You should have talked to the servants” I said as I applied the cotton wool with spirit on his wrist.
"Ouch!” he screamed in pain and let go of his arm.
"Sorry, I’m really sorry” I said. Our eyes met for the first time that night. I missed those ocean eyes of his, I missed his smile. I missed laying on his chest while watching a movie in the night as usual. I missed his company, the way he used to be so sarcastic.
I'm sounding cliche but I got lost in those eyes of his. I missed staring at them for hours without saying a word to him. I couldn’t understand why he acted like I’m a stranger to him. I didn’t want anything to hinder my marriage but at the same time I didn’t want him to ever stop loving me. I knew he hasn’t stopped loving me, but he acted like he actually did.
He moaned his pain as I touched the wound again, this time I held his hands.
"You’ll be fine okay?” I held his hands tighter and continued.
"Thanks” he smiled to me as I dressed the wound with a bandage. I didn’t answer, I just smiled too.
I let go of his arm and started to make my way back to my room. “Wait, I’m really hungry. Can you call the servant? They are asleep but this is a life or death situation” he said. I giggled at the last statement he made. I guess it was contagious, he chuckled.
"Don’t worry I’ll cook something,” I said.
I brought out the pots from the cupboards and started cooking. I intended to fry some meat for him, I was sure that he won’t forget my meat. He won’t forget how I would make them for him at night, despite the fact that I was a vegetarian. He won’t forget the multiple times he would scream at me for vomiting, despite him telling me to not worry about it.
I didn’t want eye contact at all, I focused on what I was cooking. I feel nauseous a little, but I had to hold it.
“Okay, it’s ready” I sang as I put a bowl of fried beef in front of him. I was lucky that Joseph was an heavy sleeper. And the others, I don’t really know about the others but I was glad no one woke up.
Henry’s pov
Something about the dish in front of me made me feel weird. I had never seen something like that before, but I felt like it wasn’t something new to me.
I took a bit of the beef in front of me, it tasted divine. For a second, I couldn’t see anything but everything was in black and white. I heard screaming and giggles.
Molly didn’t look like she heard it, I was confused and petrified.
“What’s wrong?” she said.
I just gave her a light smile, hoping that whatever happened a few moments ago won’t happen again.
Everywhere was silent, I could only hear the sound of crickets. I got lost in her beauty as I leaned closer to her. She also leaned closer, my heart couldn’t stop beating a million miles.
I heard the door open and I moved away quickly.
