The ride back home was silent, tension thick enough to suffocate. Alice sat between Roman and I, in the back of the sleek black car, staring out of the window. She still had that same unbothered look on her face, like she couldn’t wait to be alone. I couldn’t stop glancing at her, as if I needed to make sure she was really there, safe and unharmed—at least physically. But the sight of the police cars, the paramedics, the panic that gripped my heart when I thought I had lost her, all of it clung to me like a leech.
