"I'm sorry, what?" My voice came out in a whisper, barely audible over the thundering sound of my own heartbeat. The doctor smiled warmly, as if delivering the news of my pregnancy was the greatest thing in the world. "You're pregnant, Miss Jones." Pregnant. The word echoed in my mind, loud and suffocating. This had to be a mistake. A misunderstanding. A horrible joke. I blinked, my lips parting slightly as I tried to form words, but my brain refused to function. Nikki gasped beside me, her grip tightening around my hand. "Oh my God, Cat..." she breathed, her voice filled with both excitement and worry. I shook my head rapidly. "No. I—I can't be pregnant." The doctor remained calm, her smile unwavering. "I understand this may be unexpected, but the test results are conclusive. You’re about two weeks along." Two weeks. My stomach churned as I did the math in my head. That night. The stranger. His hands on me. His lips. The way he whispered in my ear. Oh. My. God. I felt the blood drain from my face. My breathing grew shallow as reality slammed into me like a speeding train. "Cat, breathe!" Nikki's voice broke through my panic, and I hadn't even realized I was gasping for air. She rubbed my back soothingly, her face full of concern. I looked at the doctor, desperate for another explanation. "Are you sure? I mean, could it be a false positive?" She nodded. "We ran multiple tests, including blood work. There's no doubt about it. But if you'd like, we can schedule an ultrasound to confirm everything." I swallowed hard, my hands trembling in my lap. I wasn't ready for this. Not even a little bit. "I'm—I'm sorry, I just need a second," I whispered, squeezing my eyes shut as I tried to process the information. The doctor nodded understandingly. "Take all the time you need. If you have any questions, I’m here to help." Nikki was silent for a moment before she asked the one question I was dreading. "Do you know who the father is?" My body tensed. My mouth opened, then closed, as I debated how to respond. Did I know who the father was? No. Not exactly. I didn’t even know his name. My silence must have spoken volumes because Nikki’s eyes widened. "Cat... tell me you got his number at least?" I let out a bitter laugh, rubbing my forehead. "No. I don’t even know his name, Nikki. I left before he woke up, remember?" Nikki's jaw dropped. "Wait—you mean you had a whole night of hot, passionate—" she lowered her voice, "—mind-blowing s*x, and you didn't even get his name?" I groaned, burying my face in my hands. "Nikki, please. Not now." She let out a dramatic sigh, crossing her arms. "Alright, alright. No judgment. But, Cat, what are you going to do?" That was the million-dollar question, wasn't it? I exhaled slowly, my heart still racing. "I don’t know. I need time to think." The doctor, who had remained patient throughout our conversation, finally spoke again. "I understand this is a lot to take in, but you don’t have to decide anything right now. If you'd like, I can refer you to a counselor or a specialist who can help you explore your options." I nodded weakly. "That would be great. Thank you." After a few more minutes of discussion, we wrapped up the appointment. Nikki helped me schedule the follow-up ultrasound before leading me out of the office. The drive home was quiet. I stared out the window, watching the city blur past, my mind a chaotic mess. When we pulled into my driveway, Nikki turned off the engine and faced me. "Hey," she said softly, "whatever you decide to do, you know I’ve got your back, right?" I turned to her, my eyes stinging with unshed tears. "I know, Nikki. Thank you." She reached over and squeezed my hand. "You don't have to go through this alone." I managed a small smile. "I appreciate that." We sat there for a moment before I finally spoke. "I think I just need some time alone to process everything." Nikki studied me for a moment before nodding. "I understand. But I’m just a call away, okay?" "Okay," I whispered. She gave me one last reassuring look before letting me go inside. It’s been a week since I found out I was pregnant. I had taken a break from work, hoping to clear my mind and figure things out. But nothing about this felt real yet. Then, my phone rang. It was the doctor's office. "Miss Jones, I have the results from your ultrasound. Can you come in today?" A knot formed in my stomach. "Is everything okay?" "Yes, nothing to worry about. But there’s something important we need to discuss." I hesitated. "Alright. I’ll be there soon." The moment I hung up, I texted Nikki. Me: Going to the doctor. Just an update on the pregnancy. Nikki: I’m coming with you. Me: Nikki, I’ll be fine. Nikki: Nope. I’m coming. I sighed. There was no arguing with her. When we arrived at the doctor's office, I tried to steady my nerves. The doctor greeted us warmly before getting straight to the point. "Miss Jones, your ultrasound confirmed something surprising," she said, turning the screen towards me. I stared at the image in confusion. Two small shapes. Two heartbeats. "You're having twins," the doctor announced. Nikki gasped beside me. "Twins?! Oh my God, Cat!" I felt the room tilt slightly. My breath caught in my throat. "Twins?" The doctor nodded, her expression kind. "Yes. This might be overwhelming news, but you’re in good health, and everything looks normal." I was speechless. Twins. "Cat," Nikki whispered, squeezing my hand. "I think we need to find him." I exhaled shakily. "Yeah... we do." Later That Night Back home, reality settled in. "We don’t even know where to start," I admitted, sinking into the couch. Nikki frowned, tapping her nails against the coffee table. "We have to figure out a way. He has to be somewhere." But where? And then, the next day, while I was trying to focus at work, my phone rang. It was Nikki. "Check your phone," she said breathlessly before hanging up. Frowning, I opened my messages. There was a link. A news article. As soon as I clicked on it, my blood ran cold. The headline read: "Billionaire Alexander Kingston Announces Engagement to Socialite Vanessa Huston." And right there, in the attached picture, was the man I had spent the most unforgettable night of my life with. The father of my children. Engaged to someone else. A shaky breath escaped my lips as I clutched my phone, my entire world tilting on its axis. What the hell was I going to do now?
