Her body tensed up because of the ringing cellphone. It was like the tension that she had had due to the withdrawals and the drama that came with them; eased up a little, only to return again.
"Hey mom," she greeted upon picking up.
"I've been waiting for your call," her mother said.
"I was just about to call you," Everly lied through her teeth. Maybe she would have eventually made the call, some time later in the week. But definitely not today.
"I have a hard time believing that," her mother called her out. Since she was a little kid, she was the one person who could figure her out. "But do carry on, who was with you last night?" She asked, without wasting any time beating around the bush.
"Michael," she said curtly. "The guy that I told you guys I'm seeing."
