“Something for daywear now,” Mrs Bradshaw announced. They went to another designer’s stand and Emma tried on a grey wool dress, tight across the bust with a narrow skirt. She liked it well enough, but Mrs Bradshaw decided instead that they would take a sleeveless sheath dress in black linen, the hemline just above the knee. Emma liked it a lot; it felt sophisticated, but not too elaborate. “Underwear,” said Mrs Bradshaw when this purchase had been completed. Emma had never seen such a plethora of bras and knickers, suspender belts, corsets and camisoles, in all the colours of the rainbow, purple, pink and red, plus white and black, and in a dazzling variety of materials, lace, silk, satin, velvet, lycra and goodness knows what.
