Chapter 10: Someone Is Watching Me

629 Words
Sophia felt sick. "They know my appointment?" Alexander nodded grimly. "Yes." Her hands began to tremble. "How is that possible?" "I don't know." His answer only made things worse. Because Alexander Knight was the kind of man who always seemed to have answers. If he didn't know... Then the situation was serious. Very serious. Sophia sat down heavily. Trying to process everything. The threats. The break-in. The hospital records. Someone was getting closer. And she had no idea why. Alexander immediately called his head of security. Within minutes, three security specialists arrived at the penthouse. Sophia listened as they discussed surveillance footage, data breaches, and possible suspects. The conversation sounded like something from a crime movie. Not her life. Definitely not her life. Yet somehow she had become the center of it. --- The following morning. Alexander insisted on accompanying her to the hospital. Sophia argued. For fifteen minutes. It changed absolutely nothing. Now she sat beside him in the back of a luxury SUV. Two security vehicles followed behind them. "This is ridiculous." Alexander didn't look up from his tablet. "No." "I'm going to a doctor's appointment, not visiting a war zone." "No difference." Sophia groaned. The man was impossible. Completely impossible. Yet secretly... His protectiveness comforted her. More than she wanted to admit. --- The hospital seemed normal. Doctors walked through hallways. Patients waited in reception areas. Nurses moved from room to room. Everything looked safe. Ordinary. But Sophia couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. Someone was watching. She could feel it. Alexander seemed to feel it too. His eyes scanned every corner. Every doorway. Every person. Nothing escaped his attention. They entered the examination room. A few minutes later, the doctor arrived. Dr. Harris smiled warmly. "Good morning, Sophia." Sophia smiled back. "Good morning." The examination began. Routine questions. Routine checks. Everything appeared normal. Then the doctor turned the monitor toward them. "There." Sophia looked at the screen. And froze. A tiny image appeared. Small. Fragile. Perfect. Her baby. Tears instantly filled her eyes. "Oh my God." The words came out as a whisper. For the first time, the pregnancy felt real. Truly real. Not just test results. Not just paperwork. A life. Their child. Sophia glanced toward Alexander. And nearly forgot to breathe. The ruthless billionaire looked completely stunned. His eyes never left the screen. Never left the tiny heartbeat flickering before him. The emotion on his face was unmistakable. Wonder. Awe. Love. The realization shook him. And it shook Sophia too. Because in that moment, Alexander wasn't thinking about contracts. Or inheritances. Or business. He was thinking about his child. --- After the appointment, they headed toward the parking garage. Sophia felt lighter. Happier. For the first time in weeks. Then she heard it. A scream. Everything happened at once. A black van sped into the garage. Its tires screeching loudly. Security guards shouted. People ran. Alexander's eyes widened. "Sophia!" Before she could react, a masked man jumped from the vehicle. His target was obvious. Her. Fear exploded through her body. The man rushed toward her. Fast. Too fast. Sophia stumbled backward. Alexander moved even faster. He grabbed her waist and pulled her behind him. The masked man reached them. A struggle erupted. Security rushed forward. Chaos filled the garage. Then— A loud gunshot echoed through the air. Everyone froze. Sophia screamed. Alexander turned sharply. His body instantly shielding hers. For one terrifying second, nobody moved. Then a security guard shouted. "Mr. Knight!" Sophia's heart stopped. Because she suddenly noticed something. Alexander wasn't standing straight anymore. His face had gone pale. Very pale. Slowly... Terrifyingly slowly... A dark stain began spreading across his white shirt. Right over his chest. Alexander had been shot. And he had taken the bullet protecting her.
