Chapter 24: The Letter

1057 Words
I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I heard Ethan's last words. "My father left a letter." A letter. Written years ago. Addressed only to him. And somehow... It mentioned me. The thought wouldn't leave my mind. If Richard Vance had known something before he died, then maybe the story I had believed for five years wasn't the whole truth. Morning arrived with the familiar sound of little feet running through the apartment. "Mommy!" Mia climbed onto my bed without asking permission. "You're awake!" "I am now." She held up her stuffed penguin. "Mr. Waddles had a nightmare." I smiled. "What happened?" "He dreamed Daddy forgot to come home." Before I could answer, Ethan appeared in the doorway. "I've been accused of abandoning a penguin?" Mia nodded seriously. "You have to apologize." He walked over, took the toy gently, and bowed his head. "I'm very sorry, Mr. Waddles. I promise I'll never leave you behind." She accepted the apology. "I think he forgives you." I laughed quietly. "I hope so." For a few precious minutes, nothing else mattered. Not Eleanor. Not TechEdge. Not the mysterious letter. Just pancakes, spilled orange juice, and three children arguing over who got the biggest strawberry. --- After dropping the triplets at school, Ethan and I drove across Manhattan in silence. The address the attorney had given him led us to an old brick building tucked between newer office towers. A polished brass plaque beside the entrance read: Harrison & Cole, Attorneys at Law. "I haven't been here since my father's funeral," Ethan said as he turned off the engine. "You don't have to do this alone." He looked at me. "I don't want to." Inside, the receptionist greeted him immediately. "Mr. Vance. Mr. Harrison is expecting you." A few minutes later, we were shown into a quiet office lined with shelves of worn leather-bound books. An elderly man stood as we entered. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his posture was still straight despite his age. "Ethan." "It's been a long time." "It has." The lawyer's eyes shifted toward me. "And you must be Zara Kane." I nodded politely. "It's nice to meet you." "I wish it were under better circumstances." He waited until we were seated before opening a locked drawer in his desk. From it, he removed a thick cream-colored envelope. The paper had yellowed with age. Across the front, written in careful handwriting, were five simple words. For my son, Ethan. Ethan stared at it. "Is that..." Mr. Harrison nodded. "Your father's handwriting." "He instructed me never to give it to you unless two conditions were met." "What conditions?" "The first..." The attorney looked directly at Ethan. "...was that your mother could no longer influence your legal affairs." Ethan's jaw tightened. "And the second?" Mr. Harrison looked at me. "You and Zara had to find your way back to one another." Neither of us spoke. "I thought that day would never come," the attorney admitted softly. He slid the envelope across the desk. "Your father believed otherwise." Ethan hesitated before breaking the seal. His hands trembled. He unfolded several pages and began to read. At first, the room was silent. Then I noticed his expression changing. Confusion. Disbelief. Then guilt. Deep, crushing guilt. "Ethan?" He didn't answer. Instead, he handed me the letter. "Read it." I looked down at the page. --- My son, If you are reading this, then I am no longer here to tell you these things myself. There is something I have hidden for years, and it is a burden I should have carried openly. Your mother believes she protected this family. The truth is that she destroyed it piece by piece. My heartbeat quickened. I kept reading. You will one day blame Zara for many things. When that day comes, I beg you to stop and ask yourself one question. Who benefits from making you doubt her? My hands began to shake. The next paragraph hit even harder. I investigated the accusations against Zara before your divorce. I found no evidence she betrayed you. None. Every report placed in front of you came through channels controlled by your mother. I looked up. "Ethan..." His face had gone pale. "I never knew." I looked back at the letter. I tried to tell you, but by then you refused to listen to anyone who disagreed with her. You believed I was protecting Zara because I pitied her. I wasn't. I was protecting the truth. Tears blurred the words. The final page was shorter. Almost like a confession. If I have failed you, then I ask only one thing. Find Zara. Tell her I am sorry for not stopping what happened. If she ever forgives you, spend the rest of your life proving she made the right choice. Love your children better than we loved you. Your father, Richard Vance. Silence filled the office. I carefully lowered the letter. No one moved. Mr. Harrison quietly folded his hands. "I argued with Richard for months," he said. "He wanted to confront Eleanor publicly." "Why didn't he?" I asked. The old attorney sighed. "By then he was already dying." The words landed heavily. "He thought he still had time." "He didn't." Ethan covered his face with both hands. "I threw you out." His voice cracked. "I chose her over everyone." Tears rolled down his cheeks. "My own father tried to stop me..." "And I wouldn't listen." I reached across the desk. Without saying a word, I took his hand. He looked at me, broken in a way I had never seen before. "I'm so sorry, Zara." "I know." "No." He shook his head. "You know the words." "You don't know how much I hate the man I was." Before I could answer, someone knocked sharply on the office door. The receptionist stepped inside. "I'm sorry to interrupt." She looked at Ethan. "There's a gentleman downstairs asking for you." Ethan frowned. "Who is it?" "He wouldn't give his name." She hesitated. "But..." "He said you'll want to hear what he has to say." "What did he say?" She swallowed. "He said..." "...he was the driver who took Zara away the night of the divorce." The room went completely still. Because for five years... Everyone had assumed that driver had simply disappeared. Now... He had come back.
