CHAPTER FOUR :The First Test

964 Words
Emily woke before dawn, determined to make the most of every minute. The scholarship competition was only a few weeks away, and every passing day felt like another page being torn from the calendar of her dreams. She quietly got out of bed so she wouldn’t wake her younger brother. After washing up, she sat at the small table in her room and reviewed her notes under the soft glow of a rechargeable lamp. The neighborhood was still asleep, and the silence helped her concentrate. As she studied, she repeated a quote her mother often told her: “Success belongs to those who prepare when no one is watching.” Those words gave her strength. ⸻ By the time she arrived at school, the campus was buzzing with excitement. A banner had been hung across the entrance: SCHOLARSHIP PRELIMINARY EXAM – THIS FRIDAY Students gathered in groups, discussing possible questions and sharing study tips. Lily hurried over to Emily. “Have you seen the announcement?” Emily nodded. “So, it’s finally happening.” Lily smiled nervously. “I’m scared, and I’m not even competing.” Emily laughed softly. “I’m scared too.” Before they could continue talking, Ethan approached them. “Morning.” “Morning,” Emily and Lily replied. Ethan looked at Emily. “Would you like to study together after school? I found some past questions online.” Emily hesitated. “I’d like that.” Sophia, who happened to walk past them, overheard the conversation. Her expression darkened. “They’re getting closer every day,” she thought. “I need to stop them before it’s too late.” ⸻ Classes ended earlier than usual that afternoon. Emily and Ethan met in the library, where they spread notebooks across a large table. For hours, they solved mathematics problems, discussed science topics, and tested each other with difficult questions. “You’ve improved a lot,” Ethan said with an impressed smile. Emily grinned. “So have you.” Their friendly rivalry pushed them both to become better. Neither wanted to lose. Yet neither wanted the other to fail. As they packed their books, Mrs. Anderson walked over. “I’ve been watching the two of you.” Emily and Ethan exchanged nervous glances. “I hope we’re not disturbing anyone,” Emily said. Mrs. Anderson smiled. “Not at all. In fact, I’m proud of you. Healthy competition brings out the best in people.” She paused before adding, “But remember something important.” “What is it, ma’am?” Ethan asked. “Winning means little if you lose your integrity along the way.” Those words stayed with Emily long after the conversation ended. ⸻ The following morning, disaster struck. As Emily searched her school bag for her scholarship registration slip, she froze. It wasn’t there. Her heart began to race. She emptied every notebook onto her desk. Nothing. “No…” She searched again. Still nothing. Without the registration slip, she wouldn’t be allowed to sit for the preliminary examination. Lily noticed the panic on her face. “Emily, what’s wrong?” “My registration slip…” “What about it?” “It’s gone.” Lily immediately began helping her search. Students checked beneath desks and inside lockers. Even Ethan joined the search. But the slip had disappeared. Across the classroom, Sophia quietly watched. A faint smile appeared on her face before she quickly looked away. ⸻ Emily reported the missing slip to the school office. “I’m sorry,” the secretary said. “The registration period has closed.” Emily felt as though the ground had disappeared beneath her feet. “There has to be something I can do.” “The principal may approve a replacement, but only if there’s evidence that you completed your registration.” Emily hurried home, searching every pocket of her uniform and every folder in her room. Nothing. She sat on her bed, fighting back tears. Months of preparation… Could everything end because of one missing paper? Her mother entered the room. “What happened?” Emily explained everything. Instead of panicking, her mother gently held her hands. “Do you remember why you started this journey?” “To earn the scholarship.” “No.” Emily looked confused. “You started because you believed in yourself. A missing paper cannot erase your hard work.” Her mother’s calm voice reminded Emily that giving up had never been an option. ⸻ The next morning, Emily returned to school earlier than anyone else. She requested a meeting with the principal. After listening carefully, he opened a cabinet and searched through several files. Finally, he smiled. “You’re fortunate.” Emily held her breath. “We keep digital records of every student’s registration.” Relief flooded through her. “I can issue you another registration slip.” Emily could barely contain her excitement. “Thank you, sir!” “Don’t thank me,” the principal replied. “Thank yourself for registering on time.” As she left the office, she felt as though a mountain had been lifted from her shoulders. Standing outside the building was Ethan. “I heard what happened.” Emily held up the replacement slip. “I made it.” Ethan smiled warmly. “I never doubted you.” From a nearby hallway, Sophia watched silently. Her first attempt to shake Emily’s confidence had failed. But she wasn’t ready to give up. She whispered to herself, “If Emily wants this scholarship… she’ll have to fight much harder than she realizes.” Emily, unaware of the storm that was beginning to gather around her, walked toward her classroom with renewed determination. The first test was only days away. And the greatest challenge of her life was about to begin.
