FADE IN:
EXT. WESTBROOK HIGH – MORNING
BONG...
The sound of the ancient clocktower bell echoed across the campus.
Students stopped in the middle of conversations.
Teachers looked up from their classrooms.
Even the birds scattered from the trees.
A first-year student frowned.
"Did... the bell just ring?"
"It hasn't worked in years," another student replied.
Within seconds, whispers spread through the school.
"The old bell rang."
"Someone fixed it."
"Maybe they're renovating the tower."
Only Maya and Jordan knew it meant something else.
They exchanged a worried look.
"It wasn't supposed to ring," Jordan whispered.
Maya looked toward the tower.
"No."
"It was supposed to stay silent."
INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY – MOMENTS LATER
Students hurried to first period, but the atmosphere felt different.
Everyone seemed uneasy.
As Maya walked to her locker, she noticed teachers speaking quietly among themselves.
Vice Principal Grant was nowhere to be seen.
That worried her more than if he had been.
Emma caught up beside her.
"Morning."
Maya forced a smile.
"Morning."
Emma studied her face.
"You look exhausted."
"I didn't sleep much."
Emma hesitated.
"Neither did I."
Before Maya could ask why, the loudspeaker crackled to life.
Principal Harris's voice echoed through the building.
"Attention, students. Due to an unexpected maintenance issue, the east wing, including the clocktower, will remain closed until further notice."
Jordan looked at Maya.
"They're already hiding something."
INT. HISTORY CLASS – LATER
Mr. Collins stood at the front of the classroom.
Instead of beginning the lesson, he looked out the window toward the old tower.
"Has anyone ever heard the legend of Westbrook's bell?" he asked.
The class laughed.
"It's just an old bell," someone said.
Mr. Collins smiled faintly.
"Is it?"
The room fell quiet.
He picked up a faded black-and-white photograph.
"This school opened nearly one hundred years ago."
He placed the picture on the projector.
It showed the original clocktower.
"And according to school records..."
"...the bell has only rung outside the school schedule three times."
Maya leaned forward.
"When?" she asked.
Mr. Collins glanced at his notes.
"The first time... the founder of the school disappeared."
The classroom grew silent.
"The second time... there was a fire beneath the east wing."
Jordan swallowed.
"And the third?"
Mr. Collins paused.
"The night Noah Reed vanished."
Maya felt a chill race down her spine.
"So yesterday was..."
"The fourth."
The bell rang, signaling the end of class.
Mr. Collins blinked, as though he'd forgotten what he'd been talking about.
"All right, everyone. Homework for tomorrow."
Maya frowned.
A moment ago, he'd seemed so certain.
Now it was as if he'd forgotten the conversation entirely.
INT. LIBRARY – LUNCH
Jordan placed Noah's notebook on the table.
The final recording still echoed in their minds.
"Find the Bell."
Maya flipped through the notebook again.
Most of the pages contained maps and observations.
Then she noticed something she had overlooked.
The edges of several pages were stuck together.
Carefully, she separated them.
A folded sheet of tracing paper slipped out.
Drawn across it was the outline of the clocktower.
Near the top, Noah had written:
The bell isn't the secret.
What it hides is.
Jordan pointed to a tiny arrow beside the bell.
"It says 'service ladder.'"
Maya nodded.
"He found another way up."
Before they could study it further, a voice interrupted them.
"I've been looking for you."
They looked up.
Mr. Ellis stood at the end of the table.
His gray work jacket was torn, and there was a fresh cut above his eyebrow.
Jordan stood immediately.
"You're alive!"
Mr. Ellis gave a tired smile.
"Barely."
"What happened after we left?" Maya asked.
"They questioned me."
"And?"
"I told them nothing."
He looked around the library to make sure no one was listening.
"You don't have much time."
He reached into his pocket and placed a small brass object on the table.
It was an old bell clapper—the heavy metal piece that hangs inside a bell.
Engraved into its side were the initials:
D.A.
Maya looked at him in disbelief.
"Noah mentioned those initials."
Mr. Ellis nodded.
"And if those initials are here..."
He leaned closer.
"...then The Director has already returned to Westbrook High."
At that exact moment, every light in the library flickered.
The security monitors near the front desk switched on by themselves.
Each screen displayed the same message in white letters on a black background:
STOP SEARCHING FOR THE BELL.
The message vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
Students looked around in confusion.
The librarian frowned.
"What was that?"
No one answered.
But Maya noticed one thing.
At the far end of the library, a student wearing a black hoodie stood perfectly still.
The figure slowly raised one hand...
...and pointed toward the clocktower.
Then, without a word, the hooded figure disappeared between the bookshelves.
CUT TO BLACK.
