The Map Beneath Westbrook

The greenhouse fell silent. Only the wind rattled the cracked glass panels overhead. Maya stared at the white envelope taped to the door. Across the front, written in the same careful handwriting as the other notes, were three words: For Maya Only. Jordan stepped closer. "Open it." Maya slowly peeled the envelope from the glass. Her hands trembled. She carefully unfolded the paper inside. There was no greeting. No signature. Just one sentence. Don't let Jordan read this. Maya's heart skipped a beat. She looked up. Jordan was watching her. "What does it say?" She hesitated. The anonymous writer had warned her before. Sometimes the notes protected her. Sometimes they frightened her. But they had never directly told her to hide something from Jordan. "What does it say?" Jordan asked again. Maya made a decision. "It says... we need to find the clocktower." Jordan studied her face. "You sure that's all?" Maya nodded. "I think so." It was the first lie she had ever told him. EXT. GREENHOUSE – CONTINUOUS The greenhouse stood behind the oldest part of Westbrook High. Beyond it rose an abandoned brick clocktower. Its clock had been frozen at 11:17 for years. Students often joked that it was haunted. No one was allowed inside. Maya looked at the tower. "Do you think that's the one?" Jordan nodded. "It's been closed since before my brother disappeared." "Then why did someone tell us to find it?" Jordan didn't answer. Instead, he noticed something on the ground. A trail of fresh muddy footprints. Leading straight toward the tower. INT. CLOCKTOWER – LOWER LEVEL The old wooden door creaked open. Dust floated through the air. Broken furniture filled the entrance hall. Sunlight shone through cracked stained-glass windows. The place smelled of old books and damp stone. Jordan shined his phone flashlight across the room. "There." An old spiral staircase climbed toward the top of the tower. As they approached it— BEEP. Maya's phone vibrated. Unknown Number. A new message appeared. You're not alone. Look up. Maya instantly raised her head. At the top of the staircase... Someone was standing in the shadows. Watching them. The figure wore a long black coat. Its face couldn't be seen. Then— The figure turned... ...and disappeared. "Go!" Maya shouted. They ran up the stairs. INT. CLOCKTOWER – SECOND LEVEL By the time they reached the landing... The hallway was empty. No doors had opened. No windows were large enough to escape through. Jordan frowned. "Where did they go?" "I don't know." Maya slowly searched the room. Old clocks lined the walls. Most had stopped years ago. Except one. A small brass clock was still ticking. Tick... Tick... Tick... She picked it up. It felt heavier than it looked. Jordan noticed a tiny switch hidden underneath. He pressed it. CLICK. The bookshelf beside them slowly swung inward. A hidden room. INT. HIDDEN CLOCKTOWER ROOM The room was no larger than a classroom. Maps covered every wall. Photographs were connected by red strings. Names had been pinned to a giant corkboard. Noah Reed. Emma Carter. Jordan Reed. Vice Principal Grant. Mr. Ellis. Then... Maya saw her own photograph. It was connected to every other person in the room. At the center of the board was a single photograph of a man in a dark suit. His face had been torn away. Below it were two words. THE DIRECTOR Jordan slowly walked toward the board. "This whole room..." "...it's an investigation." Maya nodded. "Someone's been trying to expose Project Hallway." She noticed a notebook lying on the desk. The cover read: PROPERTY OF N.R. Jordan's eyes widened. "My brother's notebook." He opened it. The first page read: If you're reading this, I didn't stop searching. I just ran out of time. Jordan's voice cracked. "He wrote this." The next pages contained hand-drawn maps of underground tunnels. Notes about hidden cameras. Lists of teachers. One name appeared over and over again. The Director But there was no real name. Only initials. D. A. INT. HIDDEN CLOCKTOWER ROOM – MOMENTS LATER As Maya searched the desk drawers, she found an old cassette tape. A label on the front read: FINAL MESSAGE – NOAH Jordan looked at it in disbelief. "There are more recordings." Before they could play it— The room's lights suddenly went out. Every clock stopped ticking. Silence. Then... A voice echoed through the darkness. Not from a speaker. From inside the room. "You shouldn't have come here." Jordan turned his flashlight toward the doorway. A silhouette stood there. Tall. Motionless. The light reflected off a familiar silver key hanging from the person's belt. Vice Principal Grant stepped forward. He slowly closed the hidden door behind him. Click. He looked at Maya. Then at Jordan. Finally, he smiled. "You've been looking for answers." He took another step. "So let's see..." "...how much you've really learned." To be continued in Episode 3 – Part 5...
