Shadows Behind the Walls

Every monitor in Archive B displayed the same image. Maya. Jordan. Standing frozen in the center of the room. The camera angle was from above. "There are cameras down here," Jordan whispered. Maya slowly looked up. Hidden among the pipes in the ceiling was a tiny black camera. A small red light blinked steadily. "We've been watched since we came through the trapdoor." The calm voice echoed through the speakers again. "Welcome to Archive B." Maya took a step forward. "Who are you?" Silence. Then the voice replied, "That isn't the question you should be asking." Jordan clenched his fists. "Then answer this one. Where is Noah?" The room fell quiet for several long seconds. When the voice finally returned, it was colder than before. "Noah Reed found something he wasn't supposed to find." "What happened to him?" Jordan demanded. "You'll discover the answer." "Is he alive?" The speakers crackled. "No further questions." Maya wasn't about to let the conversation end. She hurried toward a desk beneath the monitors. A keyboard, several old hard drives, and dozens of handwritten logs were scattered across it. One logbook was open. The date at the top caught her attention. September 14 – Two Years Ago The same day Noah disappeared. She began reading. Subject N.R. entered Tunnel 214 at 11:58 p.m. Subject located Archive B. Security protocol initiated. The remaining lines had been ripped out. Jordan stared at the torn pages. "They removed the rest." "Because that's where the truth is," Maya said. Suddenly, one of the monitors flickered. Instead of showing Maya and Jordan... It displayed an old security recording. The timestamp read: 11:57 P.M. – September 14 A teenage boy appeared on the screen. Noah. He looked nervous but determined. He opened the door to Archive B and stepped inside. The video had no sound. Maya watched as Noah searched through several filing cabinets. Then he stopped. He pulled out a folder. His eyes widened. He looked directly at the camera. Slowly, he lifted the folder so whoever was watching could see its label. Even through the grainy footage, Maya could read it. PROJECT HALLWAY Noah suddenly turned as if he'd heard someone behind him. His expression changed from determination... To fear. The video froze. The screen went black. Jordan hit the monitor with the palm of his hand. "No!" The recording was gone. Maya opened another drawer in the desk. Inside were dozens of photographs. Students laughing in classrooms. Walking through hallways. Reading in the library. None of them knew they were being photographed. Then Maya found one that made her stop breathing. It was a picture of her. Taken yesterday. She was standing in front of Locker 117. The back of the photograph had a handwritten note. Subject has begun asking questions. Increase observation. Jordan found another photograph. Emma. Talking to Vice Principal Grant outside the administration office. "What is Emma doing with him?" Jordan asked. "I don't know." Before Maya could think about it further, another photo slipped from the stack. It showed Vice Principal Grant standing beside a man Maya had never seen before. The caption underneath simply read: The Director. The man's face had been scratched out. A faint electronic beep echoed through the archive. Then another. Jordan looked toward the monitors. A red warning light began flashing. ACCESS DETECTED The calm voice returned. "It seems our guests have wandered too far." Metal shutters slammed over the archive's only entrance. BANG! Maya rushed to the door. Locked. Jordan tried pulling it open. It didn't move. "We're trapped." Then every monitor switched to a single live video feed. Vice Principal Grant appeared on the screen. He looked directly into the camera. Almost as if he were speaking to them. "Maya." Jordan looked at her. "He's using your name." Grant continued. "If you're seeing this, you've gone farther than any student should." Maya folded her arms. "Then come tell us yourself." Grant smiled. A calm, confident smile. "You're brave." "But bravery without patience becomes recklessness." He leaned closer to the camera. "You think Archive B is the secret." He shook his head. "It isn't." The screen filled with static for a moment. Then a blueprint appeared. It showed the underground tunnels Maya and Jordan had just explored. But the map continued far beyond Archive B. Deeper. Much deeper beneath the school. At the very bottom, one room was circled in black. Its name was blurred. Grant's voice returned. "Archive B is only the beginning." The video ended. Silence. Neither Maya nor Jordan spoke. Finally, Jordan whispered, "There's something even deeper." Maya nodded slowly. "And Noah found it." Just then, the metal shutters covering the exit slowly lifted. The way out was open. No alarms. No voices. No footsteps. It was almost as though someone wanted them to leave. As they climbed back through the tunnels toward the science lab, Maya slipped one item into her backpack without Jordan noticing. It was a thin file she'd found beneath the desk. The cover read only: CONFIDENTIAL She didn't open it. Not yet. Somehow... She knew whatever was inside would change everything. When they finally emerged into Room 214, the first rays of morning sunlight were shining through the windows. The school looked peaceful. Normal. But Maya knew better now. Westbrook High wasn't just hiding secrets. It was built on them. As she and Jordan walked away from the science wing, neither of them noticed the small camera mounted above the classroom door. Its red light blinked once. Somewhere, in a room they had not yet discovered, a person wearing black gloves watched them on a wall of monitors. The person's face remained hidden. Only one sentence echoed through the room. "They've taken the file." Another voice, deeper and unfamiliar, replied from the shadows: "Good." A long pause followed. "Now the real game begins."
