The Locked Archive

For a long moment, neither Maya nor Jordan moved. The whisper lingered in the air. "You're too late." The gym doors swayed gently, creaking as the wind pushed them farther open. Jordan's voice was barely audible. "Tell me I'm not the only one who heard that." "You heard it too," Maya whispered. Jordan nodded. "I wish I hadn't." Silence settled over the courtyard. Students laughed on the other side of the building, completely unaware that something strange was happening behind the gym. Maya took a deep breath. "We have to go inside." Jordan stared at her. "Are you serious?" "If someone called my name, I want to know why." "Or they're trying to lure us into a trap." Maya couldn't argue with that. She looked at the dark doorway again. Maybe Jordan was right. Maybe they should walk away. Then she remembered Noah's photograph. And the notes. Someone had already dragged her into this mystery. Walking away wouldn't end it. It would only leave more questions. "I'm going in," she said. Jordan sighed. "I knew you were going to say that." The gym was almost completely dark. Only a few rays of sunlight slipped through the high windows, casting long shadows across the polished floor. The air smelled of dust and old wood. Basketballs rested in a rack along one wall. The scoreboard was turned off. Everything looked normal. Too normal. Jordan looked around nervously. "I don't like this." Maya nodded. "Neither do I." The whisper had come from somewhere inside. But now... There was only silence. They searched the bleachers first. Nothing. Then the locker rooms. Empty. Finally, they reached the equipment storage room. The door was slightly open. Maya slowly pushed it wider. Rows of shelves filled with sports equipment stretched into the darkness. Soccer balls. Volleyball nets. Boxes of old uniforms. And in the far corner... An old wooden desk. Jordan pointed. "That wasn't here last year." "You've been in here before?" "For basketball practice." They walked toward the desk. Sitting on top was a small cassette recorder. Covered in dust. Yet one tiny red light was glowing. It was on. Maya pressed the Play button. Static crackled through the speaker. Then... A familiar voice. "If you're listening to this..." Jordan grabbed Maya's arm. "...it's Noah." Jordan's eyes filled with disbelief. "My brother..." The recording continued. "I don't know how much time I have." More static. "They're hiding something beneath the school." Maya's heart pounded. "Beneath the school?" Noah's voice became weaker. "If you're hearing this... don't trust—" The recording suddenly stopped. The tape had ended. Jordan repeatedly pressed Play. Nothing. His hands shook. "There has to be more." Maya turned the cassette over. A piece of masking tape was attached to the back. Written on it were three words. Science Lab. Midnight. Jordan looked at Maya. "Does that mean tonight?" "It has to." "But why the science lab?" Before either of them could guess... Footsteps echoed outside the storage room. Heavy footsteps. Getting closer. Jordan quickly switched off the recorder. Someone stopped outside the door. Neither of them breathed. The handle slowly began to turn. The door swung open. Vice Principal Grant stood in the doorway. He smiled politely. "There you are." Maya forced herself to smile back. "We were just looking for a basketball." Grant glanced around the room. "During lunch?" Jordan answered before Maya could. "We wanted to practice after school." Grant studied both of them for several long seconds. Then his eyes settled on the cassette recorder. "Interesting." Maya's heart skipped a beat. "Is something wrong?" she asked. Grant walked over to the desk. He picked up the recorder. Turned it over. Then smiled again. "This old thing hasn't worked in years." Maya and Jordan exchanged a quick glance. It had worked perfectly a moment ago. Grant placed it back on the desk. "If you're finished here, lunch ends in two minutes." "We're leaving," Maya said. Grant stepped aside to let them pass. As Maya walked by, she noticed something odd. A silver key was hanging from Grant's belt. It looked almost identical to the one engraved with the school's crest that the hooded figure had dropped. Grant caught her looking. He calmly tucked the key into his pocket. "See you in class, Maya." His tone was friendly. But his eyes weren't. The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur. Maya couldn't concentrate. Noah had left a message. He had discovered something beneath the school. And he had wanted someone to find it. Was that why he disappeared? Or had someone made sure he couldn't tell anyone else? When the final bell rang, Jordan met Maya at the front gate. He looked around carefully before speaking. "I don't think Grant believed us." "I don't either." Jordan pulled something from his backpack. It was Noah's photograph again. "I looked at it during math." He pointed to the background. At first, Maya saw nothing unusual. Then she noticed it. Behind the group of students... A shadow stood in one of the science lab windows. Watching them. The figure's face couldn't be seen. But one detail was unmistakable. The person was holding up a sheet of paper. Maya zoomed in with her phone camera. The image became grainy. But the writing was still readable. Just two numbers. 214 "The science lab," Maya whispered. Jordan nodded slowly. "Noah was trying to tell us something... even before he disappeared." The two of them stood silently outside the school, staring at the old photograph. Neither of them noticed the curtain in the second-floor science lab window move. Someone was standing there. Watching them. And this time... They weren't alone.
