The whisper came before the scream.
"Maya..."
It was so faint she almost thought she had imagined it.
She stopped walking.
The hallway stretched endlessly before her, lined with old gray lockers that reflected the dim fluorescent lights. Every classroom door was closed. The usual noise of students talking and laughing had vanished.
The silence felt wrong.
Behind her, Jordan frowned.
"Why did you stop?"
Maya looked over her shoulder.
"Didn't you hear someone call my name?"
Jordan shook his head.
"Hear what?"
Emma glanced around nervously.
"The hallway's empty."
Maya wasn't convinced.
The voice had sounded close.
Too close.
Almost as if someone had whispered directly into her ear.
A cold draft swept through the corridor, making the lights flicker.
For one brief second...
Everything went dark.
When the lights returned, every locker door stood wide open.
Metal hinges creaked slowly.
One by one.
As though someone had opened them all at exactly the same moment.
Emma gasped.
"That wasn't like that before."
Jordan slowly stepped backward.
"I've never seen this happen."
The Director walked past them, studying the open lockers.
His face lost all color.
"We're too late."
Grant looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"The lockdown has already begun."
Before anyone could ask another question, a deafening alarm erupted throughout the school.
WARNING. LEVEL FIVE LOCKDOWN ACTIVATED.
Red emergency lights flashed across the hallway.
Steel shutters slammed over every classroom window.
The exits sealed with heavy metallic crashes.
Students screamed somewhere deeper inside the building.
Then...
Silence again.
The intercom crackled.
A calm voice echoed through every speaker.
"If you are hearing this message..."
"...do not trust anyone."
The announcement ended.
Nobody spoke.
Jordan swallowed hard.
"Who said that?"
No one knew.
Maya's phone vibrated in her pocket.
One new message.
No sender.
No number.
Just six words.
The first lie has already won.
A chill crawled down her spine.
Before she could show the others, another vibration.
A second message appeared.
Someone beside you is waiting.
Waiting for what?
Maya slowly raised her eyes.
Jordan stood to her left.
Emma to her right.
Grant and the Director several steps ahead.
Mr. Ellis watched the hallway behind them.
Every one of them looked frightened.
Every one of them looked innocent.
But what if one wasn't?
A loud clang echoed from somewhere upstairs.
Then another.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Deliberate.
Whoever was walking wasn't trying to hide.
They wanted to be heard.
The footsteps stopped directly above them.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
A single drop of dark liquid splashed onto the floor.
Emma looked up.
Her face turned white.
"Maya..."
"Don't look."
Of course, Maya looked.
Something was dripping through a crack in the ceiling.
Not water.
Blood.
