The bell at midnight

The camera shutter echoed through the empty courtyard. Click. Maya and Jordan spun around. "Did you hear that?" Maya whispered. Jordan nodded. "It came from over there." He pointed toward a row of trees behind the gym. For a split second, Maya caught sight of someone dressed in a black hoodie. The figure lowered a camera. Then ran. "Wait!" Maya shouted. She and Jordan took off after the stranger. The hooded figure was fast. They darted through the parking lot, jumped over a low fence, and disappeared between two portable classrooms. Maya chased as hard as she could. She was only a few steps behind. "Stop!" she yelled. The figure glanced back. Their face was hidden beneath the hood. Just before turning another corner, they dropped something onto the ground. A small silver key. By the time Maya reached the corner, the stranger was gone. It was as if they had vanished. Jordan caught up, breathing heavily. "Did you see who it was?" Maya shook her head. "No." She bent down and picked up the key. It was old, scratched, and unusually cold. Attached to it was a tiny metal tag. No words. No numbers. Just the school's crest engraved on one side. Jordan stared at it. "I've seen that crest before." "Where?" He looked toward the main school building. "In the science wing." Back inside the school, the hallways were nearly empty. Only a few teachers remained. Maya slipped the key into her pocket. "I think whoever was following us wanted us to find this." "You think they dropped it on purpose?" "I don't think anything that's happened today has been an accident." As they passed the administration office, Vice Principal Grant stepped into the hallway. "There you two are." Both students froze. "I heard someone running through the parking lot," he said calmly. "Everything all right?" Maya forced a smile. "Yes, sir." Grant studied them for a moment. His eyes lingered on Maya's pocket. Almost as if he knew what she was carrying. "If either of you notice anything unusual," he said, "come directly to me." "We will," Jordan replied. Grant smiled politely and walked away. Jordan waited until he was out of sight. "I don't trust him." "Neither do I." That evening, Maya sat at her desk, turning the silver key over in her hands. She compared it to the mysterious notes. The handwriting. The strange warnings. The hooded figure. None of it made sense. Her phone buzzed. It was a message from Emma. Emma: Hey! You disappeared after school. Everything okay? Maya stared at the screen. Should she tell Emma? She started typing. Then stopped. She remembered the warning. Don't trust the person who smiles first. Instead, she replied: I'm okay. Just tired. See you tomorrow. Emma answered almost immediately. Good night. Stay safe. The words were kind. But now Maya wondered if they carried another meaning. The next morning, the atmosphere at Westbrook High felt different. Students whispered in groups. Teachers looked tense. Near the front entrance, a bulletin board displayed an old photograph of former students. A black ribbon had been placed over one corner. Maya stepped closer. "What's that?" she asked. A nearby student shrugged. "It's for the student who disappeared two years ago." Maya's stomach tightened. She looked at the name beneath the photograph. Noah Reed. Jordan stopped walking. His face went pale. "That's my brother." Maya looked at him in shock. "You never told me his name." Jordan stared at the photograph. "I couldn't." "He disappeared from this school?" Jordan nodded. "No one ever found him." Maya glanced back at the smiling face in the picture. Someone had written a tiny message in black ink at the bottom of the frame. It was almost invisible. She leaned closer. The message read: The truth is buried beneath your feet. Before she could point it out, a teacher called everyone to class. When Maya looked back... The writing was gone. Throughout the day, Maya couldn't concentrate. Every hallway felt different. Every locker seemed to hide a secret. As the final bell rang, she returned to her locker. When she opened it, a folded piece of paper fell onto the floor. She slowly unfolded it. Only one sentence was written inside. Go to Locker 117. Come alone. Her heartbeat quickened. She walked through the nearly empty hallway until she reached the old blue locker. It stood exactly where she'd left it. Silent. Waiting. She looked around. No one. Slowly, she pulled on the handle. This time... The locker opened. Inside was nothing but another folded note. With trembling hands, Maya opened it. It contained five chilling words. Don't trust the person who smiles first. At that exact moment... A locker slammed somewhere behind her. Maya turned. The hallway was empty. But she couldn't shake the feeling that someone had been standing there only a second before. She slipped the note into her backpack, unaware that someone was watching from the end of the corridor. The person smiled. Then quietly walked away.
