The iron key scraped across the floor.
SCREEECH...
The sound echoed through the empty hallway, sending a chill down Maya's spine.
She couldn't move.
The towering figure stood at the end of the corridor, its face hidden beneath a dark hood. Two pale, glowing eyes stared at her without blinking.
In its hand hung the massive iron key, stained with what looked like fresh blood.
Another step.
CLANG...
The key struck the tiled floor.
The sound seemed to shake the walls.
"Maya!"
Jordan's voice suddenly broke through the silence.
She turned.
Jordan and Emma were running toward her from the opposite end of the hallway.
"Run!" Jordan shouted.
Without thinking, Maya sprinted.
The Hunter lifted its head.
Then it chased them.
Not fast.
Steady.
Confident.
As if it already knew they couldn't escape.
The three friends raced around a corner and burst into the science wing.
Behind them, the heavy footsteps never stopped.
CLANG... CLANG... CLANG...
Emma slammed the laboratory door shut.
Jordan shoved a metal cabinet against it.
For a moment...
Everything was quiet.
Then—
BANG!
The entire door shook violently.
Emma screamed.
Another blow.
BANG!
Cracks spread across the wooden frame.
"It's breaking through!" Jordan yelled.
Maya searched the room desperately.
"There has to be another way out!"
Her eyes landed on an old ventilation grate near the ceiling.
"There!"
Jordan climbed onto a desk and pulled at the rusty grate.
It wouldn't budge.
Behind them—
BANG!
A hinge snapped.
The Hunter wasn't trying to force the door open anymore.
It was tearing it apart.
Maya grabbed a fire extinguisher and handed it to Jordan.
He smashed it against the grate.
Once.
Twice.
On the third strike, the grate crashed to the floor.
"Go!" he shouted.
Emma climbed in first.
Maya followed.
Jordan was just pulling himself into the narrow duct when the laboratory door exploded inward.
The metal cabinet flew across the room.
The Hunter stepped inside.
Its glowing eyes scanned the room.
Then...
It looked directly up at the vent.
It knew exactly where they were.
The ventilation shaft was barely wide enough to crawl through.
Dust filled the air.
Every movement echoed through the metal tunnel.
Emma crawled in front.
Jordan stayed behind Maya.
"Hurry," he whispered.
A loud metallic screech came from below.
The Hunter had found another way.
It was climbing into the ventilation system.
Maya looked back.
The creature was still hidden in the darkness, but she could hear its breathing.
Slow.
Deep.
Unnatural.
The tunnel suddenly shook.
The Hunter had grabbed the vent.
Metal groaned.
Bolts popped free.
"It's pulling the whole thing down!" Jordan shouted.
They crawled faster.
Ahead, Emma saw a shaft leading downward.
"I found an exit!"
She kicked the vent cover loose.
It crashed into the room below.
One by one, they dropped through.
They landed in an old library hidden beneath the school.
Shelves stretched into darkness.
Thousands of dusty books filled the room.
In the center stood a single wooden table.
On it rested an old leather journal.
Across its cover, written in faded silver ink, were three words:
DO NOT OPEN
Maya reached toward it.
Jordan caught her wrist.
"After everything we've been through..."
"...do you really think we're going to listen to that?"
Maya slowly opened the journal.
The first page contained only one sentence.
If you are reading this... the Hunter has already chosen you.
The room suddenly went dark.
A whisper echoed from somewhere between the bookshelves.
"You shouldn't have opened it."
A shadow moved.
Then another.
The Hunter wasn't alone.
