The lights went out.
Complete darkness swallowed the underground library.
Maya's breathing grew shallow as she clutched the leather journal against her chest.
A whisper drifted through the room.
"You opened the book..."
Another whisper answered from somewhere deeper among the shelves.
"So now... it remembers you."
Emma switched on her phone's flashlight. The narrow beam cut through the darkness, revealing endless rows of ancient books. Dust floated in the air like tiny ghosts.
Jordan's voice trembled.
"Tell me you heard that."
"I heard it," Maya replied quietly.
"No..." Grant said, stepping forward. "There were two voices."
A loud THUD echoed from the floor above.
Then another.
The Hunter had entered the library.
The group hurried between towering bookshelves, trying to stay silent.
Every shelf was marked with strange brass plaques.
1934
1947
1968
1989
2011
Maya stopped.
"These are years."
Grant nodded.
"Each shelf contains records from a different generation of Westbrook students."
Emma pulled out a dusty folder.
Inside were dozens of student photographs.
Every face had been crossed out with black ink.
Except one.
The photograph showed a smiling teenage girl.
Underneath was written:
MARA THOMPSON
Maya's heart skipped.
"My mother..."
Tucked behind the photograph was a handwritten letter.
The paper had yellowed with age.
Maya unfolded it carefully.
If anyone finds this, don't believe what they tell you about the Founder. The real enemy has been hiding in plain sight for years. Trust no one wearing the compass symbol.
Before Maya could read another line—
BOOM!
The bookshelf beside her exploded outward.
Books flew through the air.
The Hunter stepped through the collapsing shelves.
Its white mask was cracked down the middle.
One glowing eye stared directly at Maya.
Without speaking, it raised the giant iron key.
Then it charged.
"Run!" Jordan shouted.
They sprinted deeper into the library.
Shelves crashed behind them as the Hunter smashed through anything in its path.
It wasn't chasing them.
It was hunting them.
Emma suddenly stopped.
"Over here!"
She had found a narrow spiral staircase hidden behind a bookcase.
One by one, they rushed up the stairs.
The Hunter reached the bottom just as Grant slammed the iron gate shut.
For a second...
It held.
Then the Hunter wrapped both hands around the bars.
With terrifying ease...
It bent solid iron.
Jordan stared in horror.
"That's impossible."
The gate burst open.
The chase continued.
The staircase led to a circular chamber beneath the old clocktower.
In the center of the room stood a massive bronze bell.
Its surface was covered in names.
Hundreds of names.
Maya walked closer.
She recognized several.
Noah Reed.
Caleb Thompson.
Mara Thompson.
Then she found one that made her freeze.
Maya Thompson.
Her own name had already been carved into the bell.
"No..." she whispered.
Emma looked over her shoulder.
"Why is your name here?"
Before anyone could answer, the bell began to move.
Slowly.
Silently.
No one had touched it.
The heavy clapper swung backward.
Then forward.
BOOOOOONG!
The deafening sound shook the entire chamber.
Cracks spread across the walls.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
A hidden door slowly opened.
Cold air poured out from the darkness beyond.
The Director stared at the opening in disbelief.
"It can't be..."
Jordan looked at him.
"What is it?"
The Director swallowed hard.
"That's not another tunnel."
"It's the entrance..."
"...to the Hallway of Lies."
As everyone stared into the darkness, a child's voice echoed from inside.
"Maya..."
"...I've been waiting for you.
