CHAPTER 3 THE DEVIL IN A TAILORED SUIT Maya’s POV I lived by exactly three rules. Never trust a man who smiled too easily. Never trust a man who wore an expensive watch and lastly never trust a man who somehow managed to be both. Which meant I was already in trouble.I should've walked away the moment I met Lucian Vale. Instead, fate decided to hit me with a taxi. The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the smell of a fresh coffee, real coffee, not the burnt excuse for caffeine, my café manager proudly called "premium roast." For one blissful second, I forgot everything. Then, it all crashed back at once. The cliff, the stranger, and the taxi. My eyes flew open instantly Then I bolted upright so fast my head had a strong dull ache. Where am i.... The room wasn't mine. Cream-colored walls stretched toward a ceiling so high it could've belonged inside a cathedral. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, throwing soft light across the polished wooden floor. Floor-to-ceiling French windows overlooked an impossibly perfect garden. Even the bed felt illegal. No mattress should be this soft. "What the hell..." I looked down at what I'm wearing a Silk pyjamas. I froze something I can never afford even with my three-month salary. "... Oh no." I shouted my hands immediately searched my stomach. "They harvested my kidneys." Panic hit me all at once. My whole body was shaking. "They actually harvested my kidneys!" I repeated looking all round the room. Then knock sounded at the door.I instantly sat up straighter, pretending I hadn't just performed emergency surgery on myself. The door opened, and then a middle-aged woman stepped inside, carrying a breakfast tray. She smiled politely and then said, "Good morning." "My kidneys," I blurted instantly she blinked, confused. "I'm sorry?" She said calmly "My kidneys!" I repeated. "They're... gone!" The woman stared at me for a long second before gently setting the tray on the table. Then she laughed like mocked me, but it was actually laughed. "They're still there, dear." She said calmly. I stopped and then checked properly myself."...They are?". I finally let out the deepest sigh of relief I'd ever breathed. "Oh, thank heavens." "I've worked in this house for fifteen years," she said with an amused smile. "You're the first guest who's ever asked about missing organs before breakfast." "There's a first time for everything."I replied. "There certainly is, my dear." She said, then offered her hand. "I'm Mrs. Hawthorne." "Maya Cole."I responded. "A pleasure to meet you." She had kind eyes, but that unfortunately, made her even more suspicious to me. Kind people in expensive houses usually had excellent reasons for lying. I glanced around the room again.Nothing about this place felt normal, The furniture looked priceless if this type was in a visitors bedroom. I imagine how the main house and masters room would. The silence felt rehearsed, even the air i smelled expensive. My stomach tightened. I looked at her. "Please..." I asked carefully. "Who brought me here?". Mrs. Hawthorne hesitated. "I'm afraid that's not my answer to give." Not my answer to give?..my brain starts to calculate everything. That wasn't an answer it was a warning. I looked down at the breakfast "... Is it poisoned?" I asked "No." She replied. "Drugged or organic?"I asked. "Yes." She said I stared at her in shock, and then She laughed again, not a serious laugh, but I still believe she meant it those words. "You'll fit right in." she said jokingly. Whatever that meant it wasn't ordinary, I won't dare to take the coffee. She excused herself, closing the door behind her. The second I heard the lock click, I started making my moves. There's no way I'm staying here. I tried the bedroom door, but it was locked, and then the bathroom window was still the same. Another door led into a walk-in closet bigger than my apartment. Wonderful i was kidnapped by rich people. My lips stretch a bit. Then I climbed onto a chair and stretched toward one of the French windows, hoping I could squeeze through it. It was still locked. I was still considering whether jumping into the rose bushes counted as a survival strategy when a deep voice drifted through the room. "Planning a career in mountain climbing?" I yelped instantly, and the chair wobbled beneath me . A strong arms caught me before gravity could finish the job. Then I looked up, my eyes met a grey eyes Tailored black suit, expensive watch then Annoyingly handsome face. Behold it was him "Lucian Vale". "Oh, come on," he sighed. "We really need to stop meeting like this." I immediately stepped away from him. "You should stop appearing behind people." I said while cleaning myself up. "And you should stop trying to escape through windows." He replied. He still looks nonchalant as ever. "You kidnapped me!"I shouted. " Don't raise your voice at me i protected you." he said almost angry. "By changing my clothes?". I mentioned that.. he went calm and then stepped back a bit. "They were covered in blood." He said so gently. That shut me up. Many questions were running through my head exactly five seconds. "Wait..."I frowned. Nothing was making sense to me. "How did I even get here?"I asked. "You don't remember?"He replied, staring at me widely. I searched my memory i couldn't remember anything, just headlights. A deafening horn, then darkness that was all I could remember. Lucian studied me quietly, and then he said, "You were hit by a taxi on your way home." My heartbeat stumbled. "... What?". "You collapsed before the ambulance arrived."He continued. I looked at him, still very much confused. "How do you know that?"I asked . "Because I was there."He replied. I narrowed my eyes suspiciously. "I already left you." I said firmly. I clearly remember leaving him. "You did."He said like he knows exactly what he was doing. "So why were you following me?" I said, giving him an unsatisfying look, and for the first time since we'd met, he didn't answer immediately. "I wanted to know where you lived." His voice remained calm. Something in his eyes told me there was more. "But it wasn't the whole truth either." He continued A chill crawled up my spine. I asked him, "What aren't you telling me?". He was more weird than I thought everything about him smelled secrets, but still, he was very bold and fluent with his words. For a moment, I thought he might actually answer. Instead, he looked away. "You'll hate me when you find out." he has so much audacity, gosh! What made him think I liked him in the first place. Such cold creatures . "What does that mean?"I asked He just walked toward the door like he didn't hear what I asked. "Get dressed." He said "Lucian..." "My driver will take you home." Did he just cut me off. I was fuming at this point. He rested one hand on the doorknob. Without turning around, he said quietly, "Your grandmother has called nineteen times." My breath caught. I almost forgot I had a home. "Your phone died after the accident." He finally looked back at me. For the first time, his expression wasn't unreadable.I saw guilt written all over him "Go home, Maya." The door closed behind him. I stood there, staring at the empty doorway, and one question echoed louder than every other thought in my head. Who exactly was Lucian Vale... And why did I have the terrifying feeling that meeting him had just changed my life forever?
