CHAPTER 5 THE OFFER I COULDN'T IGNORE Maya’s POV Some people say your life changes in the blink of an eye, but they're wrong. Mine changed the moment a black luxury car stopped in front of my grandmother's house…. And waited, It didn't honk, It didn't leave. It simply sat there beneath the afternoon sun, silent and patient, as if the person inside already knew I would eventually look back. A chill ran through me, the same black sedan that almost traumatized me yesterday. The one I'd seen outside the house earlier. I wasn't imagining it after all. Grandma followed my gaze and slowly wiped her hands on her faded apron. "Maya..." Her voice was softer now, Her brows drew together, worry written clearly across her face. "Who are they?" She asked. I swallowed hard….I wished I knew. The same question had been haunting me since yesterday. Who’s Lucian?...... He had appeared at the exact moment I wanted to disappear, and somehow, it felt as though every answer only pulled me deeper into a life I had never asked for. "I don't know," I admitted quietly. The words sounded pathetic the moment they left my mouth. Grandma looked at me for a long moment…..She wasn't judging me. she was afraid I recognized that expression immediately I had seen it years ago after my parents died. The face of someone desperately trying to protect the only family she had left. Before either of us could speak again, the driver's door opened. A tall man stepped out. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, white gloves. Polished shoes that probably cost more than my monthly rent. Everything about him screamed professionalism. Even the way he walked seemed carefully measured. Not rushed, not threatening, just simply certain. As though he had already completed this conversation in his head. He approached the gate and stopped a respectful distance away, then he inclined his head. "Miss Maya." His voice was calm, more controlling. "Mr. Lucian requests your presence." I frowned immediately. His name is what I hate the most now, not because I hate him but his actions were off. No polite ask, no invites, just requests. The words irritated me more than it should have. As if saying no wasn't actually an option. I folded my arms across my chest and then said "Tell your boss I'm not going anywhere." For the first time, something almost resembling amusement flickered across the driver's face. "Mr. Lucian expected that answer." My stomach tightened…. Expected? How! The man had known me for less than twenty-four hours. How could he possibly predict my actions so well? The driver reached inside his jacket. Grandma immediately stepped closer to me. So Protective and Instinctive. The gesture made my chest ache….I didn’t want her to find out anything going on between me and Lucian. The driver noticed but showed no reaction. Instead, he pulled out a sealed envelope. "I was instructed to give you this if you refused." I hesitated, my hands were shaking, and every instinct told me not to take it. Unfortunately, curiosity had always been my greatest weakness. Slowly, I accepted the envelope, It felt surprisingly heavy, and then my fingers slipped beneath the seal. Inside wasn't money, It wasn't a contract, not even a letter….. it was a photograph. My breath caught at once. The world did a little spin on me instantly.... Holy crap!! That's me. Standing alone on the edge of the cliff with the wind tangled my hair around my face. My head was lowered, and my shoulders looked defeated and broken. Tears in my eyes were so clear, like I was fully aware and prepared for the photograph. I looked exactly like what I had been. "A woman saying goodbye to the world." A tremor ran through my body. Sweats soaked my dress like someone just splashed water on me. Someone had taken this photograph. Someone had been there. Watching me... watching everything. I looked up sharply straight into his eyes. "Who took this?" I asked Heat rushed through me as anger surged beneath my skin....I could barely control myself. Grandma mustn't find out. I called myself to order ASAP! The driver's expression remained unchanged. "Mr. Lucian believes you'll have many questions." My grip tightened around the photograph. How much audacity does Lucian have left... such an arrogant, rich brant "And he intends to answer every one of them." He continued The photograph trembled in my hand. grandma was moving closer to see what's happening Yesterday I thought I had been alone. Now I wasn't even sure I ever had been. The realization left me feeling strangely exposed. my curiosity at its peak now. An invisible eyes had been following me long before I ever met Lucian, but who!. There are now a lot of unanswered questions on my head. Grandma moved closer. "Maya." Her voice shook slightly as she stared at the man, then back to me.... "Who is this man?" I opened my mouth, just air... I couldn't find the right words to say because I didn't have an answer. And somehow, that frightened me more than anything. If i say anything about the man standing before me, then grandma will have to know about what I did yesterday. The driver glanced at his watch. "Mr. Lucian dislikes waiting." that statement annoyed me... Must I follow his instructions like his a god or something!! I took a step forward. "Then he should learn patience." I said firmly. The driver's eyebrow twitched. A tiny crack in his perfect composure. It screams victory, small, petty but satisfying. To my surprise, he actually nodded. "I'll inform him of your opinion." I blinked twice....My face felt like it was melting. That wasn't the response I expected. For some reason, it made Lucian seem even more dangerous. Powerful people usually demanded obedience. Lucian seemed content to wait. As if he already knew the outcome. As if time itself worked for him. The driver reached into his pocket again. This time, he produced a black business card. No company name. No logo. No address. Just a phone number embossed in silver. "If you change your mind." I stared at the card. Something was off again... Not threatening. Not criminal. Just... so wrong, like a missing piece in a puzzle. The driver turned and walked back toward the car. I watched him leave. Watched him open the door. Watched him pause before getting inside. Then, for the first time since arriving, he looked directly at me. "One more thing, Miss Maya." My pulse quickened. The driver's expression remained perfectly calm. But his next words sent ice through my veins. "Mr. Lucian asked me to remind you..." The world seemed to hold its breath. "...that your accident plus your parents accident wasn't just an accident." Everything stopped. The air, noise including my heartbeat. For one impossible second, I forgot how to breathe. Grandma gasped beside me. Like she heard everything. The photograph slipped from my fingers and fluttered to the ground. No! No! No! That wasn't possible. For fifteen years, everyone had told me the same story. A tragic accident...A rainy road. Bad luck. Nothing more... nothing less. So why! Why did Lucian believe otherwise? And more importantly... How did he know anything about my parents at all? I only met him yesterday! The driver climbed into the sedan. Seconds later, the car disappeared down the road. Leaving me frozen in place. I stare after it as though my life depended on it. Holding a black card in one hand. And a question that had just shattered everything I thought I knew about my life. If Lucian was telling the truth... Then someone had lied to me for fifteen years.
