Chapter 10..............Another Day Another Defeat...

874 Words
Once all rookies had entered the lobby we were forced to change into paper thin clothes, we wore heavy boots and the tags were clipped back onto our wrists, and they checked our chips. It was another day, a day of work but still a good day... Today was the Annual Guard Festival, and luckily Laya had found a way to snatch three costumes to sneak into the festival. Non-Magic protester official vests, Kyle, Laya, and I were guaranteed to have a good time. Being a rookie was basic guard misery, by the looks of it, guards don't see much fun or happiness. It actually seems you CAN'T smile when your in the academy, other than the opposite, which is when in public you must smile. The gloom is just so big you seem to forget how, but us three find a way. Ntérek walked up to our table at breakfast, "Sorry about the last time we met, bad habits..." after he froze up and said, "NO, IT ISN'T A BAD HABIT-". Harold held back a laugh, no, Kyle, you have to remember, KYLE. "Where are you all going tonight?" He said after a few spoon fulls of oatmeal, we all played dumb, "What do you mean? We stay with the rest of you-" "Mhm, there's no way out so-" . Ntérek gave us a look that said,"Yeah right geeks,". " Another thing that comes with my curse is the ability to see the truth." He glanced at Laya, possibly hoping to get a few points out of that. Laya was started to look a little impressed when he froze up and said, " NO! THIS IS NOT TRUE. I EAVESDROPPED ON YOUR CONVERSATION YESTERDAY!". He shook his head from daze, Laya's expression melted, she was annoyed but more disappointed than anything. " You what?" She said raising a spoonful of oatmeal over her head, theres the thing about Laya, she can go from sweet to salty in a flash. " Look! I'm sorry, I just wanted to make friends... This place is terrible, and I need some company-" Nyérek said. " I'm going to the Guard Festival, it sounds like a sweet place to hang, you all coming?" The three of us exchanged glances, Should we risk it?. I raised a spoonful to my lips, Maybe, we should Allison.. Laya's voice said, I jerked, and oatmeal landed on my nose. They all started laughing, "Laya!" I said mid-laugh. The morning ended with another announcement," Rookies are spending 5 more days here, if they do not prove themselves by Sunday they are kicked out and sent packing!" the girl giggled on the intercom. " Thank you for allowing me to make this brief statement, work hard..." The intercom clicked off, "Or else.." said a voice from across the cafeteria. A woman in full guard armor was standing, her hair was long and white, she had bangs that seemed periwinkle in the cafeteria light. She had on light lipstick, and she seemed to have frost bite from her glowy white skin. She could be Frosty's Cousin if you imagine her with a top hat and coal eyes. After Frosty's Cousin left...... Because the GARE'S were done the first thing in the morning was history, it didn't seem like it could be a useful tactic, but it was very interesting. According to our history, the outside world was real. We traveled the world, but we settled here, and we never left again.. And there's more! The Symphony Orb has a core, it's a pumpkin seed, I am utterly confused right now. Gym was good, we all went over the plan and before training tried on the disguises. And training was slightly better, "POW" I heard. Laya smashed into the left wall and into the dead zone, she looked up at me desperately, but I was of no help in the survivor area. Like the day before, the day zoomed by after the first 3 classes. The rest of the time was free, we could train, study, or go through drills. Kyle chose to study, but seeing Laya was rusty we both headed to training. As we walked to the Rookie Gym Laya looked at the floor with a blank expression. " Allison.." She said as we prepared to train, she had been wrapping her hands for quite a while. She was turned away from me. " Hm? " I mumbled, I turned to face her and dropped my weights. She was crying so hard, my heart dropped into my stomach, "What's wrong? " I asked. She didn't answer, just stared at me while crying. Now don't blame me! I hadn't heard someone cry besides myself in 10 years, with no friends for that long I didn't know how to comfort somebody. She seemed to be waiting, I got on my knees in front of her and asked again. " Am I good at all this? " She asked, wiping her face. " No one's perfect Laya, we learn and make mistakes. Hey, even I can't get through training without earning a new scar. " Laya whispered, " Not for a Fascinatus.. " Before I could ask she touched my face and I was sent into a dream...
