Chapter 1: A Chance Encounter

Amara’s bag swung against her side as she hurried through the bustling city streets, trying to make it to the café before her favorite spot was taken. The smell of freshly baked croissants and rich coffee greeted her as she pushed open the door, and she sighed in relief. A small corner table by the window—her usual—was still free.

She set her bag down and glanced around. That’s when she noticed him.

Ethan.

Tall, dark hair slightly messy, eyes that seemed to see more than they should. He was sitting alone at the counter, a book open in front of him, but his gaze kept drifting out the window as if he was waiting for someone—or running from something.

Amara felt a strange pull. Something about him made her heart skip, but she quickly dismissed it. She had no time for distractions today—assignments were piling up, and her mind should be on her studies.

Just as she was about to settle in with her laptop, a small collision interrupted her thoughts.

“Ah! I’m so sorry!” she exclaimed, looking up.

Ethan stood there, a little startled but smiling faintly. “No harm done,” he said. His voice was smooth, calm, almost… mesmerizing.

Amara noticed the way he carried himself—careful, guarded. But there was something gentle in his eyes that made her want to know more.

“I didn’t see you there,” she added, cheeks warming.

“Clearly,” he replied with a teasing grin, then his expression softened. “Are you okay?”

“Yes, thank you,” she said, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “I’m Amara, by the way.”

“Ethan,” he said, nodding.

There was a beat of silence, but it didn’t feel awkward. It felt… charged. A connection sparked, subtle but undeniable.

Amara sat back down, trying to focus on her laptop. But out of the corner of her eye, she couldn’t help noticing him glance back at her once, twice… maybe more.

And in that glance, she sensed a secret, something hidden behind the warmth of his smile.

Something that would change everything if she ever found out.
