CHAPTER 8There were people on the beach but Tommy saw them only as mobile obstacles between which he must make his way. He went north, plodding through soft sand toward questionable refuge. Fear prodded him so sharply that once he lost his head and broke into a run. But he got hold of himself almost immediately, and slowed to an inconspicuous walk. What the hell was the matter with him, anyway? He was a cop; he knew that a cop’s attention is always attracted by a running man. Particularly when the man doesn’t seem to be running anywhere.
