2 weeks later.
“Wait what? I didn’t get that” I sat up straight. That was a lie. I heard what he had said. I just didn’t want to believe him. My heart raced as I awaited my fate. The manager took in a deep breath.
“I’m sorry Aliya we just have to let you go” he said as he looked away.
“WHAT!”
“I’m sorry Aliya” he stood up and went to the small office window, staring out in the open.
“Sir please I need this job, I have already apologized for the incidence. It’s been over, since 2 weeks” I begged.
He finally walked back to his seat, he loosened his tie and cleared his throat “We know about that and that is why, we gave you a little raise on your salary” he glanced at the envelope and back at me. As I sat there, I kept pinching myself. In hopes that this was some nightmare but the more the pain came, the more real it seemed.
God! The debtors, mum’s health, the rent.
I swallowed back a sob that was threatening to be free from within me.
Finally I was able to move my legs, which had turned jelly and walked out of his office. The rest of the day went by, in a snail’s pace. The more the day went by, the more I saw no reason for the termination of my job. Maybe that’s why the manager, couldn’t look me in the eye.
At the end of the day, I bid goodbye to my friends and left.
As I waited at the train station, my heart beat fast. I was desperate. I needed to do something or else we would be on the street. I got my phone and began to type furiously. Unfortunately I couldn’t find anything. The blazing of the train horn, brought me back to my senses. Just as I was about to stand I saw a post on a vacancy from the king conglomerate. They needed a cleaner.
My lips spread out in a smile as I sprinted into the train. The moment I sat, I began to send in an application. When I was finished, I clutched the phone in my hand and took in a deep breath. For what I know, my application could be lost in a sea of others but I had hope. It was small but it was something.
*********************************************
It’s been a month since I began to work as a cleaner at the king Conglomerate. By the time I had finished basking in the euphoria of getting a job, the next day after I was fired from one, the reality set.
The king’s paid their works handsomely well. I got paid 500 dollars. It was a mountain to my previous pay but believe me I worked my ass out for that money. Work was very stressful. At some point, it felt like the King’s had given me money but have taken my peace and joy away.
I missed work at the confectionary, despite my salary.
One evening after a tiresome day, at work I got an Ad to sign up for a dating app. I had never used a dating site before.
Hmm this could be fun.
I entered my details but not my picture. Immediately I got a message. That was fast.
“Hi”
I rushed to the profile. It had no display picture but his gender was Male. His name was Mr. no name. I had mixed thoughts on chatting him up. For all I knew, he could be a serial killer. After I made dinner for me and mum, I changed into boy T shirts and a boxers, before crawling under the covers of my bed. It was then that I replied him.
“Hi” I was about dropping my phone, when his message came in.
“So what took you so long” the message said.
I raised an eyebrow. I barely know him but he already feels like he owns my time.
“Just so you know I have a life that has nothing to do with this app” I typed furiously. The message read sent but he was yet to see it. I dropped my phone on my night stand, and flopped down on the bed.
I busied away looking for God knows what in my bag. When I couldn’t take it anymore, I grabbed my phone off my night stand.
“I bet if you were busy enough, you wouldn’t have signed up here” his reply came.
“And if you really wanted a date, you wouldn’t be this arrogant” I typed.
“Whatever” he said with a meme of a baby rolling his eyes. I chuckled.
“Bet I made you smile” his message said.
“No” I said.
“Liar” he said. I chuckled the more.
And that was how, I and Mr. nobody became chat buddies. On some days, he was my therapist and other days, he made my blood boil but most of the time, I was seen smiling sheepishly. My mum asked me if I had found a boy and I shut down that arguement.
Time went by somewhat fast. It was my 6th month working as a cleaner there. I wasn’t feeling so much pain like before, because I always looked forward to chatting with Mr. no name.
I was about to take my tools and start work. Everyone had left the office and I decided to chat Mr. No name up.
“Hi handsome” I typed.
Just before I began to work he replied me.
“Hi gorgeous “he said.
“What’s your real name?” I asked.
Immediately he began to type. I didn’t expect for him to reply though.
“Alex” he said.
That was a nice name. It made me wonder what he really looked like. Just as I was about to reply, my leg kicked a bucket and it made so much noise. I picked it up and raised my head up. My heart flow over my mouth.
Standing in front of me was the guy I had been rude to. He was about to enter the elevator while typing on his phone. He was wearing a suit but had his tie loosened up. It looked like he worked in the building. When he raised his head up, I hid behind a wall.
