My heart beat impossibly fast as I waited, for the elevator to close.
What was he doing here? Does he work here? What position does he hold here? Was he capable of making my life a living hell?
My head was beginning to spin with all the horrible worst case scenarios. Being an over thinker, didn’t make my life any easy. At the end of it all, I knew with him dressed in suit and all, it meant that he was not a cleaner like me.
I let out a deep breath when I turned. The elevator had closed.
That night I worked as quiet as a mouse, deep in thoughts of what ifs. Begging my racing heart to quiet down, was a herculean task. I didn’t care about my chat with Alex. All I wanted more now, was to do my work and go home.
2 hours later, I was through. I scanned the office and breathed a sigh, when I saw no one. Especially the mystery man I had flipped off at the confectionary.
Alex had been sending me messages. I told him the story of how I was rude, to a customer and now the said customer works in my office. He sympathized with and asked me to watch my temper.

The subsequent days at work, saw me looking from left to right as I worked. This was what I did till, I was caught by someone. Due to the fact, she worked late, she always saw me cleaning.
“Hi my name is Anna and you must be…” she smiled at me.
“Aliya” I smiled back.
“Oh what a beautiful, name you’ve got there” she shifted her bag to the other arm.
“Thank you” I smiled.
“Emm Aliya, I have seen you work… its everything alright?”
I could see the worry etched all over her face.
“No I’m fine” I gave her my best smile.
“Nice work you do here” she complimented me while getting into the elevator. I mouthed a thank you.
Suddenly a thought came to mind. I ran to the Elevator and clicked it open.
“Is everything alright?” Anna asked dropping her bag.
“Oh no it’s nothing, I just wanted to ask you, your role” I said almost panting.
Anna smiled. “I am the secretary of the CEO”
“Wow that’s amazing” I said.
I said a little joke and we rode the elevator in silence. She turned her book to an angle and my eyes caught on something. I squinted and immediately my eyes widened. Anna looked alarmed, she followed my eyes and suddenly began to laugh.
“That was my reaction, when I first saw him. I know the CEO is fuckingly so handsome. Just like the devil”
“He is the CEO” I whispered. She nodded. The man in the picture was none other than the mystery man I had flipped off.
Now I’m dead. The devil was really playing a fast one on me.
I managed to not have an emotional meltdown in the elevator. I went home and got under the sheets immediately. If he found out who I was, I would be out of the door within a twinkle of an eye.
So I began to dodge, meetings, and other company events. The last person I wanted to see was the CEO. 2 weeks have gone by and the work was going on well. I managed to build some sort of friendship with Anna. I also told her to be on the lookout for any possible position. Cleaning was making my back, feel like that of an old woman’s own.
One night while I was cleaning the office, Anna ran towards me panting. I rushed to her side.
“Anna sweetheart tell me, what is the problem?” I shook her shoulders.
“While I was working, the boss gave me his phone. Just before I boarded my Taxi home, I saw his car outside. He asked me for it. I checked my bag and I can’t find it” she cried.
I wiped the tears off her face and smothered the hair out of her eyes. “Now be calm. We will find that phone Okay?”
She nodded her head countless times, as she wiped the tears off her face. I took off my overalls and began to search for it in her office. Oh the look on her face broke my heart. I badly hoped we would find it.
30 minutes later, I jumped at the sound of a phone ringing.
“It’s mine” she said as she left her office. I stood, hands on my waist.
Now if I were a phone, where will I be?
I went round her desk and stood. Then I bent low and began to dip my hands in dark corners. Suddenly I felt something. I dragged it out. It was a bag. I rummaged through the bag and I saw a phone. It was a sleek looking IPhone.
“Anna I think I found it!” I yelled. Immediately Anna came running into the office. She took the phone from my hands and her face spread out in a smile.
She engulfed me in a hug. “Oh thank you Aliya! I don’t know what I would have done without you. I owe you” she cried. My face mirrored hers.
“You don’t have to, I am glad to help” I wiped the tears off her face. She put in the password and the phone came alive. She checked for missed calls. Satisfied of everything, her face beamed with smiles.
“Can you hold unto this for me” Anna pushed the phone into my hands and began to pack her bags. My hands trembled as I held unto the phone. Anna got a call and mouthed the words that she was coming. Then she left.
I turned and picked my overall off the floor. In the process, the phone fell but I was fast enough to grab it. My heart raced as I held unto the phone. What if I broke it?
As I kept on Anna’s table, the screen lit up. First I raised an eyebrow, then I began to blink like a faulty bulb. The letters squirmed like snakes as I read.
“Hi Gorgeous”
“What is your real name?”
“Alex”
