Chapter 8
Nia picked up the sheets of paper from the floor and read the words. The State of Texas Versus Jake S. Carlton. Nia Jones. You are commanded to appear at Harris County Court, Thursday, July 22, 2015.
Her heart raced. She whipped out a chair and read the words again. She pushed several strands of hair from her face and ran to get her phone. She thumbed through to Jake.
“Hello?” His deep voice now sounded like a sexy rasp.
“Hi,” she said, leaning over the table. “Why do they want me? I don’t see why I have to do this.” She threw the pages onto the table. She winced. “I can’t even understand what it’s saying.”
“Whoa there,” Jake said in his Texan drawl. “Slow down. What happened?”
“I just got subpoenaed,” she said, her voice shaking.
“Oh, I see. That’s to be expected.”
