Chapter 2: Nothing Exciting

309 Words
Lucas's POV: "Lucas, the applications have arrived. Your father would like you in the study to go through and pick out your fifteen," the head butler, Collins, says.        "Of course. I'll be right there," I say, putting down my book.        I make my way downstairs and to my father's study. There are piles of applications stacked on his desk. His glasses sit on the edge of his nose as he scans an application and holds it out to me.        "A two. Very impressive," he says, dropping the paper in my hand.        I glance at the picture on the front. Blonde, tan, probably owns five houses. Not a care in the world.        "Start looking, Lucas. For God's sake, there are hundreds of applicants. You can only choose fifteen."       I sit down opposite his desk and pick up an application. The picture is posed and the answers to the questions seem fake. I toss the packet aside and pick up another one. After almost three hours of looking through applications we had five maybes, two yes, a lot of no's, and still so many packets to go through.        I pick up a packet and read the name and status. Usually a six or below I ignore, it's not personal it's just they usually have no education or etiquette. Fives get a skim, fours get a perusal and threes and above get a quick read before being decided.        The packet read five but the way that the questions were answered and the quality of the photo suggested otherwise. The photo was of a pretty blonde. She was standing at a microphone, grinning. Her glittering eyes ignored the camera and the picture looked genuine. I read through the answers and stuck the packet safely in the yes pile. Even the name stuck out to me. Charlotte Robins. Nothing exciting, but simple and real.
