Chapter Ten - THE TRUTH BENEATH THE STORM

486 Words
Sylwen stood frozen, her gaze locked onto the shifting mirrors of the Chamber of Echoes. The images had faded, but the pulse of Aetheric energy still thrummed in the air, vibrating through her bones. Joran watched her carefully. “You saw it, didn’t you?” Sylwen swallowed hard. “That symbol… I’ve seen it before. On me.” Joran nodded, his expression unreadable. “That mark isn’t just a symbol. It’s a binding—an ancient sigil woven into your very existence.” He turned toward the mirrors, his fingers tracing the edge of one. “You are what the old texts call an Echo-Born.” The words sent a shiver through Sylwen’s spine. “Echo-Born?” Kael crossed his arms. “Never heard of it.” Joran sighed. “Few have. It’s an ancient lineage—those who are tied to the Aether not as mere users, but as conduits. The Echo-Born don’t just wield power. They carry fragments of the Aether’s memory itself.” Sylwen’s mind spun. “That’s why I hear the voices…” “Yes,” Joran confirmed. “You don’t just hear the echoes of the past. You are connected to them.” His gaze darkened. “And that connection makes you dangerous—to yourself, and to others.” Auren stepped closer to Sylwen, protective. “What does that mean? What’s the danger?” Joran turned to another mirror, pressing his palm against its surface. A new image flickered into view—a city engulfed in Aetheric flames, its sky torn open by a swirling rift of energy. In the center of it all stood a lone figure, their arms raised toward the storm. And at their feet, the same glowing sigil burned into the ground. Sylwen felt a chill crawl up her spine. “That… that’s the same mark.” Joran nodded. “This was the last recorded Echo-Born before you. She was powerful. And she nearly destroyed an entire kingdom.” The words struck Sylwen like a hammer. She staggered back. “No… I would never—” Joran’s gaze softened, but his voice was firm. “Power like yours doesn’t come without consequence. The more you listen to the echoes, the stronger their pull becomes. If you’re not careful, they can consume you.” Sylwen’s breath came fast and uneven. This was supposed to be a search for answers, but instead, she had uncovered something terrifying. Kael exhaled sharply. “Alright. So she’s got more power than she should. The question is—who else knows?” Joran hesitated. Then, slowly, he turned to a separate mirror—one that was already active. Unlike the others, this one didn’t show the past. It showed the present. Sylwen’s stomach twisted as the image became clear. A fleet of Skyguard warships, sailing straight toward Zephara. “They know,” Joran said grimly. “And they’re coming for her.”
