Chapter Five - THE VEIL'S WARNING

356 Words
The Stormchaser plunged into the thick fog of the Skybreak Isles, its hull groaning as the ship swerved between jagged, floating rock formations. The mist was dense, glowing faintly with residual Aether energy, making it impossible to see more than a few meters ahead. Kael tightened his grip on the wheel, his jaw set. “This place is cursed. No one comes here unless they’re desperate.” Auren shot him a glare. “Guess that makes us the definition of desperate.” Sylwen barely heard them. The moment they entered the mist, the whispers in her mind grew stronger, turning from faint echoes into something more urgent—something ancient. "You should not have come here." Her breath caught in her throat. The voice was different this time. Not fragmented, not lost to time. This voice was aware of her presence. A sudden jolt rocked the ship. From the fog, ghostly shadows shifted—figures moving just out of reach, flickering like mirages. Sylwen’s pulse quickened. “There’s something here.” Kael’s hands tensed on the controls. “Yeah, I noticed.” Another shape loomed ahead—a wrecked airship, its broken hull floating aimlessly in the mist. The crew aboard the Stormchaser fell silent as they passed it, its tattered sails whispering against the wind. Auren frowned. “What happened to them?” Sylwen shuddered. She didn’t need to guess. The echoes carried memories—painful ones. She reached out, letting the energy flow through her. The mist swirled, revealing faint images of the past. A battle. A ship, much like theirs, trapped in the fog. And something waiting within it. Her heart pounded as she staggered back. “We’re not alone.” Before anyone could react, a sharp, inhuman shriek cut through the silence. The fog churned, and something moved in the shadows—a shifting, writhing mass of darkness, eyes glowing like distant stars. Kael drew his sword. “Looks like we’ve got bigger problems than the Skyguard.” Sylwen’s blood ran cold. The whispers had warned her. Something had been waiting for them in the mist. And now, it had found them.
