"Hey there"
I looked up from the book I was reading, studying actually. With the White High Entrance exam coming , I didn't pretty much have time for anything else.
"Whats your name dear?" She continued.
Mrs Valkyrie, the librarian, was a short plump middle aged woman with a heart shaped face. Being a castout, I couldn't actually afford books worth White High, so I kind of have been coming to the public library literally almost everyday since last month.
"Amelia."
Thank god. She doesn't have the familiar disgust on her face even though I'm a castout. Must be my looks. After all, all you have to do to become a castout is to be born to unmarried parents. And strangely enough I am blessed (or cursed) with angelic beauty (or so people say).
"Isn't it time you left for home? Its already 8 past 10. Or are you waiting for someone to come pick you up? I could wait until then to close if so."
Oh my God! That late already?! I'm done for! How could I lose track of time like this?! I should've left before sunset. The streets around my house are not exactly the safest in the world and I live alone. And owing to my misplaced beauty, almost every street is unsafe for me. Ugh! Why is this happening?!
" You're right. I should probably go. Bye!"
I shouted that before dashing out the door at full speed. I heard her say something but I was too far to make out the words.
The streets are dark. And even the streetlights are flickering. Not the best night to be roaming the streets. Definitely not. I'm freaking out at literally every small sound. No, this isn't right. I need to calm down. What did I study today? Yes, Hierarchy of castes or the caste system. First comes the Dark Kingdom Royals and then the Dark Kingdom nobles, if they do exist that is. The Dark clan hasn't shown any sign of existence for centuries... Concentrate Amelia, after Dark clan comes Fire, Ice , Teleport and Air Kingdom Royals and then their nobles. And then come the second wave, that is the Earth, Green and E ( Electricity ) Kingdom Royals and then their nobles and then the common folk of all Kingdoms. And finally last but not the least...wait no... definitely the least, the castouts or the caste of illegitimate children and their guardians (if they ever show up that is. Only rarely does that happen though. Not everyone wants to be a low caste and be looked upon with disgust and thrown around like slaves, even if they are parents. But some do.). Usually castouts live their lives in orphanages, but I live alone. The eyes of the orphanage higher-ups filled with pity and disgust, I hate them more than anything in this world. But living alone comes with a price...
" Hey there, beautiful. How would you like to came have some fun with us tonight? I bet you'll love it. Won't she Alan?"
" Yes. Yes she will."
A voice broke me out of my riverie. I turned around to find a group of men in rags. 'Sheesh. They are drunk legless and still have the energy to pick on me? But they were closing in. This is no time to think about that stupid brain! Run!'
I ran as fast as I could. I have to take a lot of turns. It usually works in losing them. Yes, its not the first time. I took a left turn into a deserted alley, which unfortunately turned up as a dead end.
I had nowhere to run.
The men had had already taken the turn. They were saying something but I couldn't hear anything. I closed my eyes. 'I don't want this. God help me!'
I fell face down on the floor when one of them tore my jacket away and pushed me. A sharp pain jolted through my head. I felt something trickling down my head. Must be blood. I tried to get up but my body wouldn't budge.
I heard footsteps closing in. This is it. I lost all hope and stopped trying to move when suddenly something fell between me and them from above. I opened my eyes slightly to see it was a boy. His back was turned to me but from his clothes I can make out that he was a royal. What is he doing in this area this late? But I really hope he saves me.
"Leivatein!"
He hissed as an axe materialised in his right hand and it was on fire? I must be hallucinating...
"Y-y-y-your H-highness!"
One of the men stammered and they all literally fell on the ground bowing. But the boy was unfazed. He must be used to it.
"Why are you still here? Unless you want Leivatein to have fun with your throats. I would be happy to oblige if that's the case."
His voice was soft but cold and his words were like daggers. They fled.
Leivatein. Where have I heard it before? I'm sure I've heard it somewhere....
