Perdita
I woke up to the sound of the rumbling sky. The thunders shook the air and lightnings illuminated the darkness. I rushed immediately to the tower and turned the light hoping that no one lost their lives while I was sleeping peacefully. The memory of ten years ago suddenly came back into my mind turning my stomach into a ball and knocking the air out of my lungs. I watched the storming water that swallowed everything in its way like a starving monster. I could almost recall the screams and how the ship got eaten by the flames and waves. I could smell the burning wood and flesh, as well as the salty water and the scent of blood that brought the rambling wind. There was something unnatural in that storm and I felt it back in my bones. It seemed that the waves answered to my singing that's why the people of the city blamed me. I remember hearing a gorgeous voice despite the thunderstorm and I kept singing to it thinking that it was calling me, until I got thrown into the basement and beaten half dead by the mayor and a few men. Emilio stopped them but I couldn't hear due to the pain how he managed to convince them from not killing me. When I opened my eyes I was in my bed, in a new dress and unharmed. Emilio never looked into my eyes again, nor he smiled. A few days later, he was murdered in front of my eyes. From that moment, I've lost all my senses. I couldn't feel anything beside the pain and even the pain became numb after a while, until Tyler arrived like a ray of sun at the end of the storm. He showed me how beautiful the world could be once the storm clouds disappear. I've never heard that voice again and until recently, I haven't heard mine either. The wind was blowing loudly and the thunders made an awful sound, but it was nice to hear it. I used to be terrified by these storms, but not anymore. I watched the water building up into higher and higher waves, which disappeared after hitting the rocks around the island. Could the storm be loud enough to swallow my voice? I wondered and with shaking lips I've opened my mouth and in the lowest voice possible I sang a song that I had engraved in my heart. I don't know where I've heard it, I couldn't recall if it was Emilio or from someone else... But it didn't matter.
- "The more I want the more I steal
The more I hold the less is real
All worldly things I follow blind
In hope not faith was paid in kind
The line is drawn, the change is made
I come to you, I’m not afraid - I kept my eyes on the water and felt my heart beating fast. What if they hear me? What if they'll come despite the weather? For some reason a smile spread on my face, what would happen if they do come indeed? I don't think they can do anything new to me. So what if they come? They'll beat me and go away while I'm going to be left behind, in my own blood in the pouring rain. I got up and stood on the railing. The storm kept raging as if it wanted to show me what I had in my heart. I opened my arms and looked down at the rocks. I've imagined how, just in a few days, that little ship is going to appear in the horizon, bringing another day of real life to me. So with more confidence as my heart beat faster I let my voice be taken by the wind. He'll maybe hear it and the end of the week will be here faster...
- And I’d believe in anything were it not for you
Showing me by just existing only this is true
I love you, I love you, without question, I love you - The salty water hit my face with tiny droplets and as I sang the sky started to clear up. A tiny ray of sun broke through the heavy black clouds and illuminated the horizon. I felt a longing in my heart and wanted to jump for it. I extended my hand to reach the light when someone suddenly grabbed my hair and pulled me back onto the cold stone floor. I hit my head and heard the c***k of my ankles. The smell of blood invaded my nose and that hateful glance met my eyes.
- What were you thinking?! - the man asked and he stepped into my stomach. I coughed up blood and despised the iron taste in my mouth. Before I could answered he lifted my head and hit it against the floor again. Another c***k, that was definitely my skull. I couldn't help but smile, that little ray of sun was still there, fighting against the wind and heavy rain.
- That's enough. - Remy' father said an the other guy spit on me. While his leader walked to me and looked into my eyes.
- After a decade, some might think you've finally learned your place. - he said and I chuckled. My reaction sent made him shiver.
- I guess... I lack some manners... - I said with a smile, knowing that they won't kill me and I'll heal sooner or later. He lifted me up and swung me over the railing. Remy's father kept holding me over the railing above the pointy rocks. The storm kept raging again and I just laughed.
- Do you think this scares me? - I asked and he grinned.
- If not then why are you trembling? - he asked and with a smirk on my face I said.
- I'm excited! - he looked disgusted by my answer.
- What makes you so excited?! - he asked and I just closed my eyes, hanging my head back and enjoying the heavy raindrops on my skin.
- It feels like the sky is mourning for me and the ocean is rambling for its child. - I said and Remy's father pulled me back. He grabbed the baseball bat from one of his man and put it into the light of the oil lamp. He threw me to the floor and with a maniac smile on his face he said.
- Really?! You know what makes me excited? Watching you burn... - he set my hair on fire as well as my clothes and also hit my jaw with the burning baseball bat before they left me alone. Burning, hurting but all I could do was waiting for the rain to stop the flames and my body to heal itself, in the meantime, the last thing I remember was me singing in a low voice, watching the smoke being blown by the wind, and the cold rain washing down my skin.
