Zelda POV
After five long days cooped up in the hospital we were finally released. My babies were healthy and ready to go home. They were always sleeping I even got worried yesterday and called the nurse to come check them. It turns out new babies sleep a lot. They cry when they are hungry, need to be changed, feeling hot or cold, sick etc. From time to time they will be awake long enough to bath, get a massage and drink milk. It was my job to make sure I feed them every 3 hours, check their nappy and keep them safe. I stood next to their beds and stared at them. Gosh they looked innocent and peaceful. I wondered what they were dreaming about, if they were even dreaming. I truly felt blessed to have them.
I checked my watch and it was 1 pm, my mom was supposed to pick us up at 11 am. I picked up my phoned and called her again. No answer, it takes me to voice mail after ringing 3 times. “Dammit! Where the hell is she, we agreed yesterday that she will be here at 10 am to pick us up.” I was getting impatient and angry. Why was she not answering her phone? How was I supposed to get home with the twins and all this stuff? I don’t even have a pram to put them in. I look at my babies to calm myself down. “Hey babes! You ready to go home?” I turn to see Triston with a grin on his face. I won’t lie I was surprised to see him right in front of me. I had not seen Triston since the day I gave birth to the twins. I even thought he changed his mind about the friendship. “Hey!” I responded giving him a hug. “What are you doing here?” I asked confused. “Can’t a friend drive you home?” He smiled at me, while picking up my bags. “Well, I was expecting my mom to come pick me up about 3 hours ago.” He stood next to me carrying the bags and staring at the kids. “They are beautiful just like you.” He kissed my forehead and left the room, leaving me stung and confused at his gesture.
A few seconds later he comes with two nurses, one pushing a wheel chair. Triston was holding an envelope in his hand smiling sheepishly with one of the nurses. A ping of jealousy stung me badly. “Sit Ms Zelda, I will push you to the car.” One of the nurses said to me, pointing at the wheelchair. “No, I can walk. I do not need a wheelchair,” I said looking at here with a bitter smile. “Sorry Ms I can’t let you do that, its the hospital policy.” I sat down angry not bothering to listen to the rest of the stuff she was telling me. Triston was too drawn to the nurse she was speaking to, while she was blushing endlessly, Mxm. We all went outside to the car. Triston opened the front door for me, motioning to me to go in. When I wanted to protest, he just walked away and helped the nurses to put the twins in their car seat. One nurse left after she was done helping. The other remained talking to Triston for a while. They exchanged numbers and she left. Triston got in the driver seat and started the car. “Do you want us to stop somewhere and buy food or you will eat at home?” He asked me looking at the road. “Just take me home, I’m not hungry.” I was angry at him for ignoring me and flirting with the nurse in front of me. He took one looked at me and I could tell he knew I was angry. “Whatever you want my lady.”
The car suddenly came to a stop, I opened my eyes to Triston looking at me. “We are home.” He said smiling at me. A middle aged woman came running to the car opening the backseat to take babies out. “Triston, What am I doing here?” I asked him with pure evidence of surprise and annoyance. He knew very well that I was tired and I needed to get home, but he decided to make a detour. He looked at me and told me to come out he will explain later. I look behind and I notice my babies were gone. A young man was taking our bags inside the house. I quickly got out of the car, running to the house. I saw the woman who took my babies going upstairs. “Hey, where the hell did you take my kids?” I asked her radiating of pure anger. “Oh, Hi Mrs Grey, follow me. I took them to their bedroom.” She answered as though she did nothing wrong. Who the hell in their right mind takes someone else kids without their permission?
I followed her upstairs, she entered the room next to Triston’s bedroom. My mouth opened and my jaw dropped. The room was painted white with a Disney theme. Two wooden cots, one blue and the other pink, two rocking chairs, changing station, a play area, a TV mounted on the wall and all the other stuff the kids needed. As I stood there admiring the room, the lady whose name was unknown was changing Kyle’s nappy. Triston came in hugged me from behind and kissed my head. “You like it?” He asked me and waited for my answer in anticipation. I released myself from his hold, taking Kyle from the lady, and sat on the rocking chair. “Please leave.” I asked the lady as she was about to pick Kiki up. She was acting like my kids were hers. It pissed me off. She looked at me with shocked at my rude request and walked out of the room. Before she exited the door Triston spoke, “Thank Marry, we will call you when we need you.” She smiled at Triston and disappeared. “What the f**k was that Zelda? She was helping you and the least you could do is say thank you.” Triston snapped at me, looking irritated by my behavior. “What am I doing here Triston?” I asked him, clearly ignoring his annoying question. He picked up Kiki who was crying, while I was feeding Kyle. “I think she needs a diaper change.” He commented, while putting her in the changing station and changing her nappy. All the anger melted away as I watched him changed her, after he placed her on her chest and rocked her for a while ‘til she slept. At that moment I wished Nathan was the one doing all this. “Bring Kyle I will burp him, you can feed Kiki.” We exchanged the kids and sat in silence for a while.
Once the kids were asleep we left the room and stood outside the door. “I need to shower, I feel sweaty.” I told Triston. He led me to his room. “You can use my shower, there are clean towels in there, a new face towel and a new toothbrush. Your clothes are in my closet. Meet me downstairs when you are done.” He immediately left the room after speaking to me. I took a shower, got dressed in a short floral blue dress and went downstairs. “He is in the sitting room waiting for you. I will bring food in a minute,” said the elderly woman. She was smiling at me and being nice to me, I wondered why. She was probably afraid of losing her job. I walked in the sitting room and found Tritson busy on his laptop. Once he felt my presence, he looked up and smiled at me. “Come sit next to me, we need to talk.” I sat down next to him. Before he could speak, the elderly woman brought in the food with the help of the young man I saw earlier on. Once they left the room Triston started talking.
“You mom went to see you brother. He was in a car accident on the day you gave birth. He is in critical condition and his health is deteriorating. So you mom asked me to stay with you while she is away.” He paused a bit, looked at me and then continued. “Zee, the reason I did not come to see you after the day you gave birth is because I was setting up this place for you and the kids. I hired Mary to help you with the twins that is why she was all over them. Adam well is the cook and gardener.” I looked at Triston and said nothing trying to process everything he just told me. I then grabbed my phone and tried to call my mom, but she did not answer. I felt a message requesting her to call me back once she got my message. I looked up to see Triston eating. “Thank you Triston, I’m sorry for acting like a bitch.” He smiled at me then said, “There is no need to thank me Zee. Eat your food it’s getting cold.” I felt bad because he seemed like he did not care for my apology. “Zee!” He called me, I looked at him. “Your brother will be okay. You can stay with me for as long as your mom is away. My home is your home.” He stood up and left the room.”
I took my phone and sent him text:
Zee: Thank you Tris, I really appreciate everything you are doing for me.
Tris: No need to thank me.
I went to the children’s room to sit with them. Mary came to give me a pump to pump milk. She insisted saying she wanted to help me in case I am too tired to wake up. I don’t know how long I was in their room but I felt tired and looked at my phone. I saw a text from Triston.
Tris: Hey, we will be sharing a room. Mary and Adam think we are married. I only told them that so you don’t get uncomfortable around them. I will come home tomorrow morning. I don’t want to make you uncomfortable on your first night.
Zee: Again, thank you Tris. Please come back home, I will be happy if you sleep at home. I really don’t want to inconvenience you in your own home.
Tris: Get some rest I will see you tomorrow morning and we can talk about the sleeping arrangement.
I wanted him to come back home, I was too worried that she might have gone to see that nurse. Plus Mary and Adam will think something is wrong if he doesn’t sleep at home when his fake wife and kids just returned home.
Zee: I don’t want to be alone tonight please Tris, come home.
Tris: Uhm! Okay when I am done here in the office I will come home.
I was relieved to see that he will come back. He came home at 12 midnight. I was still awake waiting for him. He came in the room, went to take a shower and after took a blanket from the drawer and settled on the couch. “You know that this is your bed right.” I said, while sitting myself up. “I know, but I don’t mind the couch, it is also comfortable.” “Just come to bed Triston, we will use the pillows as a barrier between us. I have my blanket and you have yours.” It took a bit of convincing before he eventually joined me in bed. I really wished he could hold me in his arms while we sleep, but he placed the pillows between us and slept on the far end of the bed. I watched him as he slept and all I could think about was how much I miss Nathan. He looked like him when he was sleeping. I hope one day I will forget Nathan and all the memories. I sighed and forced myself to sleep.
