Zelda POV
Every magazine and newspaper had Nathan and Lilly as a cover story. The TV channels were also going on and on about their wedding. ‘I guess he did it, he married Lilly after all. I had hoped he will change his mind and come back to me but I was wrong. He was married now and belonged to someone else. I threw the newspaper in the bin and switched off the TV. What a way to start a Sunday morning. I spent the whole morning and afternoon in my room crying, eating and sleeping. I wished the earth will just swallow me and I disappear forever.’
My mom came knocking telling me Triston was waiting for me downstairs. f**k, I forgot about dinner, I was not in the mood for company. I sighed! I went to take a quick shower, wore my pj’s and went down to meet him. “Hey Zee you ready to leave?” He gave me a huge smile hugging me ignoring the fact that I was wearing my pjs. “I don’t thin-” he cut me off. Let’s go, we have a 30 min drive, so it’s best we leave now. By the way you look lovely.” “Triston, I really don’t feel like peo-” he cut me again. “Good because I was planning for a quiet dinner just the two of us no audience.” He pulled me to the car giving me no chance to back out.
The ride was silence, we both did not say anything to each other. 20 min later he pulled up in front of a medium size cottage surrounded by a rose bush. The yard was not big, but matched the cottage size. He led me out of the car into the house. He was holding a bag which looked like my mother’s bag. “What are you doing with my mom’s bag?” I asked him. “Oh this, ha ha! She gave me some old clothes to drop at the shelter.” He was nervous when he responded. He took the bag upstairs leaving me in the sitting room. The sitting room was simple, white leader couch, a coffee table and a small book shelf.
A few seconds later he came down and dragged me to the kitchen with him. The kitchen was bigger and nicer than the sitting room. If I did not know better I would swear a woman was involved in choosing everything. It was a white modern kitchen big enough for a family of 5. It made me realize I was not ready for the kids and I also had nothing to offer them. I started sobbing uncontrollably. Triston stopped cutting the vegetables and came to sit next to me. “Did I say anything to offend you? I’m sorry Zee. Please stop crying.” He pulled me to a hug brushings my hair. “I did not think asking about your life in Riversdale will make you cry. Sorry dear.” I sniffed and looked at him with my red eyes full of tears. “No, you did not say anything wrong.” I wiped my tears and continued talking. “Your home just made me realize that I am not ready for the kids. I have no money, no job, no house, no car, nothing. Yet I am going to bring kids in this world, while I can’t even take care of myself.” The tears rolling down my eyes were like a waterfall. “I am all alone; he left me and married a better person.”
Triston pulled me to a hug again. We remained in that position for some time, the only sound was my sob. I was a sobbing mess and made his shirt wet. “You have your mom and siblings by your side. You know very well that I am here for you.” He pulled out of the hug and brought me water. “If you want a job, well you can be my PA for now. When there is an opening in my company, then we can change your appointment. You can start tomorrow if you want.” Triston offered. “Thanks Triston, but I don’t think I want anyone to see me like this.” I rejected his offer even though I needed a job badly. My mom was not rich, she was a nurse, and I knew the money she earned will not be enough when the babies arrive. “The job will be there for you anytime you want it ok.” Triston kissed my forehead. He went back to preparing us dinner and asked me to set the table. He cooked roast mutton with mixed vegetables.
We ate dinner in awkward silence. Triston kept stealing glances at me the whole time. After dinner, he cleaned everything while I stood there watching him. “Do you want desert?” I gave him a fake smile and replied with a big ‘NO!’ “Then let me give you a grand tour of my house, which I hope will turn to a home one of these days.” He smiled and dragged me along, showing me the whole house and the garden. When we finally got back to the sitting room, my feet were swollen and painful. I sat down and placed my legs on top of the coffee table. “Your feet look swollen, will you like to soak them in warm water? I will massage after.” I wanted to say no, but no one has ever done that for me. Plus I needed it. He left the room and came back with a portable foot spa. I set my feet in there for 30 min, while we watched the news. He took my feet out, dried them with a towel and placed them on his lap. He poured a massage oil on his hand and started massaging my feet.
Triston POV
I looked at the lady sitting next to me while I continued massaging her feet. Gosh Zelda was beautiful; I wondered why the baby daddy left her. It’s good for me, who knows maybe she will give us a chance now. I coward away last time when she was working with me during the summer break. I did not want to make her uncomfortable by asking her out, while she only came for work. I feared her rejecting me more than anything else, so I let it go. I was happy when her mother called me a month ago asking me to help her with Zelda. I won’t say I was surprised that she trusted me with such personal information, everyone in their community adores me because of my contribution to the society. When she told me she was pregnant I was disappointed because I thought I missed my chance. After telling me about the punk who got her pregnant and left her I was, happy to hear it.
I turned my head to looked at Zelda, her eyes were fixed on the TV and tears fell from her eyes. I turned to see what was making her sob. It was this stupid wedding they kept broadcasting over and over again. I guess she felt sad watching other people happy, knowing very well she could not have that type of happiness herself. I took the remote and switched off the TV. “Thank you Triston. If I had to see them getting married again I will die.” She said crying. “I still can’t believe Nathan went ahead with the wedding. I guess he really loved her more than me.” I paused my hand movement and asked her an obvious question. “Is he your baby daddy.” She kept quiet for a while before responding. “Yes Nathan is the guy I met at some club, got involved with and ended up pregnant, jobless and lonely. I think that sums it up.” I looked at her in shock. Nathan Grey is her ex, the man who got her pregnant.
