Chapter 9: Rejection

Zelda POV

I stayed for three days in the hospital and I was discharged with no sign of Nathan. He never bothered to check how I was doing. I guess he really did not care. I sighed as I made my way out of the hospital. Everything was such a mess. ‘What am I going to do now? Terminate or keep it? But if I keep it what do I tell my kids? Mama was stupid and horny thus she is a single parent and daddy is happily married with his family.’ I Sighed and decided to walk home because I only had my house keys and phone with me.

When I got home, I took a shower, checked my emails and responded to some few texts on my phone. One email caught my attention; it was an invite to attend an interview in a construction company from my hometown. Triston Grey was the owner of the company; I once worked with him on one of my undergrad project. His company was the only company willing to hire me for a summer break. I am grateful to him that I did well on my project. Triston helped me personally even though he was a busy man. He also paid me well for my summer vacation job.  I don’t know much about him, all I know is he is 2 years older than me, single (then not sure about now), loves helping the community and does not like attracting attention to himself. No one knew about his family nor anything personal about him. He was a handsome hot mess, with little sense of fashion. I did not respond to the email, I just left it and went to sleep.

The next morning, on Friday I went to work. I was met with a pile of files which needed my attention. Ethan was nowhere to be seen the whole day. I worked on all the files without taking a break. I wanted to finish everything because I know on Monday there will be more work. I was working on my last file, when I received a call from the CEO’s secretary demanding I bring a red file that Ethan asked me to work on since Monday, he needed it ASAP. Luckily I started with it in the morning. I looked at my watch, it was 4pm. I was tired and hungry. The thought of going anywhere near Nathan’s office made me feel sick.  After she hanged up, I rushed to Nathan’s office with the file on my hand. I greeted the secretary and attempted to drop the file with her, but she told me to go in because ‘they’ wanted to discuss it me. I wondered who is ‘they’, but I did not ask her.

I made my way to his office door, I halted by the door hearing people talking and laughing cheerfully. Lilly’s voice was so loud and she sounded very happy. I stood there for a while debating whether or not to go in or just drop the file with the secretary, rushed to my office and send HR my resignation letter. I decided to knock and act professionally.  I only knocked once and heard a voice saying come in. All three of them were looking at the door waiting to see who it was. I went in looking very nervous. I greeted them looking down, “Afternoon, here is the file you requested for Mr Ethan. If that is all you needed from me, I will take my leave.” As I was about to open the door Nathan spoke, “Sit down Ms brown we have a lot to discuss, Mrs Lily Grey is our new client, I want you to explain everything on the file to her.” I looked at Nathan who showed no emotions at all, I then looked at Lily, I forced a smiled and nodded. The meeting took 2 hours. It was very awkward and uncomfortable for me. After the meeting, Lily kissed Nathan goodbye and then turn to me and Ethan with a happy smile and said ‘goodbye’ and left. Ethan asked me to remain behind because they wanted to discuss some issues concerning my future in the company. I honestly did not like the sound of that.

“Ms Brown, you have been absent for 3 days from your work duties without informing anyone and that is not acceptable.” Nathan looked at me like he was disgusted and continued. “I will let you off with a warning this time. Anyway we have decided to change your appointment to a PA appointment for Ethan until you prove that you really want to work in this company.”  I stood up from the chair I was sitting on, walked towards Nathan’s desk and stopped in front of him. Before I said anything, I gave him a tight slap on his right cheek. “f**k you and your company Nathan, I quite. It a shame you act like you don’t know I was in the hospital when you are the same person who took me there.” I shouted. “Ms Brown its Mr Grey to you, I do not understand why you are trying to bring your personal matters in the office. This behaviour of yours will leave you jobless.” Nathan bucked at me, showing that he was very angry at this point. I laughed bitterly and said “Of course you will say that, you are not the one who will be a single mother, while the cheap ass d**k head is playing happy family with his wife to be. I wish he never finds happiness till his last breath on earth, and that his money and company brings him nothing but stress and deteriorating health.” I said each and every word bitterly while crying. Ethan for some reason was not saying anything he just stared at the two of us. It was as if we were entertaining him. “Ms Brown, you are fired; I want you out of this building in 30 min.”  Nathan said looking at me with furry in his eyes. Ethan was shocked and seem like he was trying to process what was happening at this point. I slapped Nathan again, causing him to fall. The slap left a red print of my small hand on his cheek. He quickly stood up, and started to strangle me. I could see hate in his eyes, the man I love was no longer there, he was gone. This was Nathan the CEO and Lily’s fiancé. When Ethan saw me becoming pale, he pushed Nathan back and gave me a glass of water. The room was silent for a while, till Nathan broke the silent. “It was just s*x Zelda, do me a favor and forget it ever happened. You are not the only woman I have slept with so get over it. Do not think for a second that lying about being pregnant will make me leave Lily for you. You are a nobody. Do you understand?” Ethan decided to ask the question Nathan could not ask, “Zelda are you pregnant with Nathan’s child?” I looked down sobbing and trying to think how I will answer the question. “Answer the damn question and stop wasting our time.” At that point I could feel my heart breaking all over again, I could literally feel the physical pain causing me to sound like a wounded dog in pain when I was answering the question. “N… n…no… Na….tha…n I am not pregnant. I had a miscarriage on the day you took me to the hospital.” I stuttered each and every word. “Good, now get the f**k out of my office and company, I never want to see you again.” I stopped crying as Nathan said each and every word to me. I looked at him smiled and said, “With pleasure.”

I left his office, picked up all my stuff in my office and left the building. On my way home, I called my mom to inform her that I will be moving back home next weekend. I responded to the GL construction company, informing them that I will be attending the interview. I called the rental agency to info them that I will be moving out next week Friday due to my job loss.

I still could not believe what happened today. My mind kept repeating everything, over and over again. One thing was certain; I will never let anyone fool me and I will never give my heart to any man ever again. This pain is something I never want to feel again. When I got home, I sat on the couch and listened to ‘Bonnie Raitt - I Can't Make You Love Me’ on repeat. I never thought I will be in this position, and I honestly had no idea where my life was going. The only thing I wanted more than anything right now was to be okay again.
