Chapter 5- Amelia

The elevator dinged, arriving at my floor. The door opened wide, and I stepped out. I got to my front door and noticed my front door was cracked open. I took slow steps into my place. My place was a safe spot, and no one could get in without getting through security in my building first. I exhaled the breath I didn't know I was even holding when I saw Arielle in the kitchen, putting away the essentials she had brought over with her. She then grabbed two wine glasses and the wine bottle and took them to the living room. She poured two glasses while I changed out of my office attire. I went into my room and started stripping off my clothes. I grabbed a pair of sweatpants and a long shirt, put them on. I'm not worried about not having on a bra or undies. I went back into the living room, taking a seat on the couch. I grabbed my wine glass, thanking Arielle for buying it. I took a sip of wine when I noticed Arielle in sweatpants and a t-shirt as well. “When did she have time to change?” I thought. “I changed when I got here.” She said, chuckling. “Did I say that out loud?” I asked, shaking my head. My thoughts were everywhere at the moment. “So, tell me about this morning,” she said, smirking, knowing she wanted all the juicy details of this morning's adventure. “There isn’t much to say. I ran into a Greek god and spilled my coffee all over us,” I said, shrugging. “Did you do anything stupid?” She asked, taking a sip of her wine. “I may or may not have tried to help him clean off his shirt. I tried to buy him a coffee due to my mistake,” I said, setting my wine on the glass table in front of the couch. “I also may or may not have run to my car, like a bat out of hell, when he received a phone call,” I said, pulling my knees to my chest. She looked like a fish out of the water, opening and closing her mouth, trying to figure out what to say. “Okay, so did you do any of that?” She asked, knowing damn well I did all that. She laughed so much that she fell off the couch. I grabbed her wineglass before she could spill any on my carpet and set it on the coffee table near mine. I shook my head, chuckling at her craziness. As Arielle sat on the ground, laughing at my misfortune. "I can't believe you had the guts to run from him." I tried not to laugh. "There is no way. That's funny," she added while dying of laughter. Arielle was right. It is pretty funny now that I look back on what happened. Who in their right mind runs away from a hot guy like him? Me, that's who. Most women would fall at a hot guy’s feet, especially if the guy looked like that one today. She got off the floor laughing, grabbed her wine, and handed me mine again. There was a comfortable silence while we replayed what I told her about this morning. We sipped our wine and enjoyed the quiet. My mind had been going nonstop. I've been running my mind in circles in my head today, missing my dad and the Greek god who appeared in my life today. “Do you remember that asshole you dated back in college?” Arielle said, breaking the silence. “Ben?” I questioned. “What about that asshole?” I added. “I saw him the other day,” she said, finishing the last bit of wine she had in her glass still. “Where?” I asked, not caring about him. That asshole broke my heart in college. I caught him cheating on me with my roommate. “He was walking into the cafe you like. I overheard him telling Big Dave he had moved back to town. That he’s working for some big shot Real Estate company.” She said, now I have to find a new coffee spot. Who am I kidding? I couldn’t do that. I loved Little Dave’s Cafe. They had the most delicious coffee and always made mine, the way I enjoyed it. Sweet and sugary. “Why is he back in town?” I thought to myself. He shouldn’t be back after he broke my heart. My dad made it clear to Ben that he could never show his face around me or the city again. “I don’t know, but he had better stay away from you, or I’d make him wish he had never met you,” she said with a stern look. I knew she wasn’t playing around. Arielle was serious. She’ll hunt him down with no problem and make him wish he had never been born. She can be scary when she wants to be, but she appears sweet and innocent. I know Arielle like the back of my hand. She’s my best friend, my soul sister, but she can be as intimidating as my father when things go south. You never want to get on her unpleasant side. Feisty is the word I’d use to describe her. *Flashback* I was at my dad’s for the weekend because I needed a break from campus, and he only lives 2 hours away. College was working out well. I have a boyfriend, who I love and adore. I made some great friends in college. Midterm exams are this week, and I needed a quiet place to study. My roommate would come back from partying late. Her extracurricular activities would keep me up all night. I wanted to make my dad proud, so I hardly ventured to parties and stayed in the dorm room doing homework. Arielle would come over and study with me. I arrived at dad’s house. He was waiting outside on the front porch for me. When he saw me pulling up, he got down off the porch and made his way to my car door. I put the car in park when my driver’s door was flung open. Dad was pulling me out of the vehicle and wrapping his arms around me in a tight hug. “Hey, baby girl. Oh, how I have missed you.” Dad said, kissing my forehead and pulling away from the hug. “You look more and more like your mother every day,” he said, with the biggest smile on his face. “Oh, how I have missed you too, Dad,” I said, pulling him in for another hug. He gave the warmest bear hugs. We pulled away from the hug and grabbed my stuff from my car. We walked into the house and towards the kitchen, where the maid had made some chocolate chip cookies. “I know midterms are coming up, and you need to study. Do you want to do your work in your room, or would you like to use my office?” He asked as he ascended the staircase. “Can I study in your office, please?” I asked, catching up with him. He nodded his head and walked to his home office. He pushed the door open and walked up to his desk, putting my things down. “Are you hungry?” He asked as we left his office. At the thought of food, my stomach answered his question for me. He looked at me, laughing as he descended the stairs. “Let us get some food in you, then.” He said, hearing my stomach growl again. We descended the stairs, but instead of heading to the kitchen, he grabbed his keys off the hook and headed out the front door. He held the front door open for me to walk out. Dad turned around and locked the front door before walking over to his Mercedes AMG-G 63 Suv. Unlocking the door, he opened the passenger door for me. What a gentleman my dad is. He always said chivalry never dies. It was a reliable way to win a woman’s heart. He said it was how he won my mom’s heart by showing her that gentlemen still exist. I got into the car, putting my seat belt on while he walked around the front to the driver’s side. He got in, buckled up, and pulled out of the driveway. We drove for a short while, listening to music. I love spending time with my dad. “How’s school been?" He asked, breaking the silence. “School’s wonderful, dad. I’ve been studying hard so I can graduate on time and help you with the fashion house.” I replied, smiling at him. “How’s Ben?” He thinks the world of Ben. “He’s good. He told me to say hi, next time I came home to visit you. So hi!” I said, looking out the window. “Dad, where are we going?” I asked before he could ask me another question, looking out the front window. “We’re heading to your favorite restaurant, silly. Don’t you remember the way?” he said with a chuckle. Now that I was paying attention, I could see us getting closer to Texas Roadhouse. I was bouncing up and down in my seat. I could almost smell the burgers and fries that were waiting for us to order. Dad pulled into an empty parking spot and shut off the car. We both stepped out of the vehicle at the same time. I turned to look at my dad. He was already staring at me with a smile on his face. I smiled back and walked to the front door of the restaurant. I held the door open for dad. He walked over to the hostess's desk and told her our names; she grabbed two menus from behind the counter and walked towards the table. Getting to the table, I pulled out my chair and sat down, grabbing the menu to see what I wanted. I know I didn’t need to look at it to know what I wanted. I get the same thing every time I come here. A bacon cheeseburger with extra pickles, french fries, and a sprite sounded delicious right now. The waitress walked over, took our order, and walked away to bring us our drinks. Our waitress asked, dropping off our drink for us. "Was there anything else I can get for you?" The waitress asked. "That will be all for us, thank you.” my dad said, smiling. She nodded her head and walked away, leaving dad and me to talk about everything and anything. Fifteen minutes later, she arrived at the table with our food, placed it down in front of us, and walked away. We enjoyed our lunch and conversation when the waitress walked up. “Is there anything else I can get for you?” She asked, handing us the bill while she started clearing our empty plates. “No, ma’am.” He said, putting a hundred dollars on the table to cover our bill and for her to have a gracious tip. We grabbed our things and left the table. Dad opened the door for me, and I stepped out. “Thank you,” I mumbled, walking out of the door and into the car. Dad joined me in the car right before I finished putting my seat belt on. We got back on the road and headed back home. I started humming to whatever was playing on the radio when dad turned on the street that led us straight to the house. “Are you planning to study when you get home?” Dad asked when we pulled into the driveway. “Yeah, I will have it finished before dinner is ready. I need to study all weekend if that is okay with you?” I said, stepping out of the car once he parked. He nodded and walked into the front door; I followed behind him. Dad headed to the kitchen to do something while I made my way to his home office. I sat down behind the desk and turned on my laptop, and pulled out my books from my bag. I was studying for a while before I heard the door to the office open. I looked up and saw dad come in with a tray of snacks and drinks, smiling. “You’ve been in here studying for a few hours, so I figured you would need a snack to keep you energized," my dad said, smiling. He sent the tray down next to me but made sure not to spill anything on my books. I stood up and wrapped him in a tight hug, thanking him for being the coolest dad ever. He smiled and told me to get back to studying, and dinner would be ready around 7. He left the office without saying another word, so I could get back to studying. I looked at the clock and realized it was almost dinner time, and I had been studying for school all day. I placed my stuff to the side and grabbed the tray my dad brought into my room for me. I headed toward the kitchen to put them away. “I was about to come to get you. Dinner is ready.” My dad said before turning around and heading back into the kitchen to grab the food. I walked in behind him to help him set the dining table. I grabbed the plates and silverware and headed to the table. Dad came out with a tray of lasagna, my favorite. After placing the food down, my dad and I took our seats at the kitchen table and dished out plates. We sat in comfortable silence, enjoying our meal. “Thank you, Dad, you always make the most delicious food,” I said with a smile. I grabbed our empty plates and walked them to the kitchen to wash the dishes. I walked into the living room and sat next to dad on the couch. He was watching some documentary that I couldn’t grasp. I stood up and walked over to dad. I kissed him on the cheek and told him I was heading to bed. I got to my room and headed to the bathroom to shower. I finished my shower and brushed my teeth. Not bothering to blow dry my hair, I threw my hair in a bun. I slipped into my pajamas and crawled under my cover. The weekend flew by. All I did was study and hang out with dad. I had to head back to the dorms today. It was bittersweet having to leave my dad behind. I loved being home with my dad. I put my stuff into my car and walked back inside to let dad know I was heading out. I kissed my dad’s cheek goodbye, telling him I’d see him later, and walked toward my car. I got on the interstate and drove in the college's direction. After driving for two hours, I pulled into the parking lot and switched off my car. I grabbed my stuff and walked to my dorm room. I paused at my door, hearing some noise, but I put it to the back of my mind. I pushed the door open and stopped in my tracks. I found my roommate bent over my bed by my boyfriend of a year and a half. I noticed it was her because she had her head turned toward the door. He f****d her like a savage animal. They must not have heard me enter the room. But why would they? They were making such loud noises. I turned around and ran out of the room, slamming the door behind me. I ran to my car, not bothering to turn around to see if anyone was following me. I reached my car, unlocked the door, and threw everything in the back seat. Before I could start my car, my door was flung open. Ben grabbed my arm, pulling me out of the car, but I didn’t want to deal with him right now. I shoved him as hard as I could away from him and got back into my car, locking the doors. He tried to open the door, yelling for me to unlock it so he could explain. I wasn’t listening to it. I put my car in reverse and pulled out of the parking spot, damn near running over his foot. I drove away, not looking back in the rearview mirror. I couldn’t look as Ben’s cheating figure grew smaller and smaller the further I got down the road. I dialed Arielle’s number. “Arielle, I-I need you," I said with tears running down my face. “Where are you?” she asked. “I don’t know. Ben, he cheated on me,” I said, sobbing into the phone. “Pullover. I’m coming to get you.” She said. I heard shuffling on the other end of the phone, knowing she was serious about coming to get me. “I’ll meet you at a hotel. I can’t go back to the dorm.” I said, looking for a hotel as I drove. I arrived at the first hotel I could find and called my dad. “Hey daddy,” I sobbed through the phone after he picked up. It only took one ring for him to answer. "What's wrong?" he asked, sounding worried. I didn’t want to tell my dad because he loved Ben's selfish ass, but I needed my dad right now. “Ben, he cheated on me, dad,” I said, trying to calm down so I could talk to him. “HE DID WHAT!?!” Dad yelled through the phone, causing me to pull it away from my ear. *End of Flashback* I couldn’t help the small smile as my best friend broke me from my negative thoughts. This girl has had my back for as long as I can remember. She’s my best friend, my person, someone I could always count on having my back. Arielle is the shoulder I always cry on. She gives me resilience like I give her strength. I would kick anyone’s ass that dared to f**k with her. I could hear her rambling on and on about how she would hit him with her car the next time she saw him walking across the street and making it seem like an accident. I shook my head. My best friend could make anyone laugh when they were in a bad mood.
