apter 4 “You’re back” Emily poked her head out of the kitchen door “How was it?” She yelled as she went back into the kitchen “Craziest day of my life!” I yelled back taking long strolls into the kitchen “You have to listen to this” I said to Emily as I yanked her out of the kitchen and pulled her to sit with me on our tan 4-seater couch “Mia, I have something on fire, what is it?” She stared at me with curiosity “I saw him. I saw him. He was directly in front of me” I began to blab “You saw who?” I hesitated for a moment feeling irritated that she had no idea as to what I was referring to. "Remember the guy from the club, the one-night stand from the weekend?” I ask “Wait what?” Her eyes widened with realization “Where did you see him?” her eyes filled with curiosity. I took a deep breath before ranting. "You won't believe this, He owns Blake Tech. More like his dad does, but you get my point. And he was there while I had my interview and tried to sabotage it. Like that was not enough, I got assigned under him as his executive assistant so technically he’s my new boss. I had s*x with my new boss Emily ” I tell her in one breath Emily just stared at me like I just grew another head from my neck and she lowered her voice, leaning in closer. "You're kidding, right? Your boss is the same guy from the club?" I nodded, her expression a mix of disbelief and inner shock “And to make matters worse, Alexander hates me so much. He kept looking at me like he was going to kill me” “Sorry who?” she asked confused “His name is Alexander” I informed her “I see” she rubbed her forehead “l don’t even know what to say. That’s a really weird twist of fate. I can’t imagine how awkward it is going to be for you both” I sighed, " You have no idea. I got an email on my way home. I officially start tomorrow” I look at Emily's eyes which are filled with empathy as she reaches out and gently places a hand on my shoulder. "On the bright side, you get to stare at the delicious glass of sunshine every day. No better way to handle stress” She teased me trying to ease the tension “You’re so annoying, oh my gosh Emily, I intend to handle this as professionally as possible. I’m going to pretend like I don’t recognize him” "The mix of emotions would be there. Don’t just be too hard on yourself. Now go get changed while I plate you some delicious mashed potatoes and chicken curry sauce” she managed to cheer me up and distract me from my thought Emily did a good job of distracting me throughout the day. We bonded during lunch. We binged a few episodes of our favorite series at the moment. Went out for ice cream and snack restock and resumed the rest of our series while enjoying takeout and ice cream for dinner. I completely forgot I had work to face the next day. I woke up the next morning with my spirits lifted, and headed out the door to face whatever challenge Alexander would try to bring my way. I know he was prepared to take his displeasure on me and I was also prepared to handle things professionally. The mail I got mentioned that I should ask Ashley Vicker – My contact person for my onboarding and briefing of tasks. Upon getting to work I had to meet face to face with the rude receptionist from the other day. “Hi, I'm a new hire. Was told to ask Ashley Vicker” I said cutting to the chase “Name?” She spoke without looking at me “Mia Warren” I returned the same energy She scanned me with her eyes, as though she was assessing me and finally nodded. She passed me an access card "Miss Vicker is expecting you. Take the elevator to the 4th floor." I simply nodded and made my way to the elevator with a deep breath. With the direction provided by the first person I met on the 4th floor, I got to locate Ashley’s office. She collected the temporary access card I was given and handed me my personal 2-in-1 ID and access card. I also got my fully funded meal card. The cafeteria meal was free, but the meal card was for scenarios where staff need to grab something else aside from what the cafeteria offers. The meal card could be used at 2 different cafes and 2 fast foods just a few buildings from the office building. And apparently, the card gets funded monthly. I was also handed a customized Blake Tech box which contained a pen, journal, water bottle, mug and key holder all in the color navy blue and customized with the company name and logo in white. There was also a T-shirt in navy blue as well, which read ‘Blake Tech does tech differently!’ also boldly written in white and the company logo at the back. Ashley went on to also brief me on my task as ‘Mr Alexander Blakes’ Executive Assistant. And as we spoke I needed to make my way to the 10th floor as he was expecting me. “Maria, the receptionist on that floor will show you to your office. Welcome to Blake Tech Mia, and please call me Ashley” she said with a bold smile on her face. The elevator doors opened on the 10th floor, revealing a spacious, contemporary office area. Just like Ashley said Maria, a middle-aged woman showed me to my office and mentioned Alexander's office was directly beside mine. Maria’s desk was right in the center of the floor , facing the elevator. There were 5 doors on this floor. One was Alexander’s and then my office, the other was the floor’s kitchenette, the next was the floor’s restroom and the fifth was the floor's meeting room. And since Ashley mentioned he was expecting me, I hurriedly dropped my belongings as well as the gifted box I was handed and made my way to his office, placing a soft yet audible knock on his door. I waited patiently before I heard his Husky voice murmur “Come in” Alexander, who was dressed in a perfectly tailored navy blue suit, was engrossed in a phone call as I walked into his office. I waited anxiously with my heart pounding with a mixture of anticipation and when he finally ended the call and looked up, I was faced with his intimidating stare. “What do you want?” he said, his tone both dismissive and uninterested. “Good Morning sir, I was told you were awaiting my presence” I greeted “And for what might that be?” He looked at me with eyes that read no expression Was this man joking? What else would I be in his office for, aside from my daily tasks? “For my task sir,” I answered “Leave my office” he ordered, moving his attention to the screen in front of him “Sir?”I was confused “Are you deaf? Leave my office, I’ll call for you when you’re needed” he snapped at me “Okay sir” I managed to utter before taking my leave, but just before I was a few steps from the door his words stopped me. “You still have enough time to resign, and trust me if you don’t, I will make your life miserable for as long as you work here” All I could do was stare at him. It was obvious my presence wasn’t welcome here, but I wasn’t raised to quit. Despite being scared of him and the statement he just made, I acted unbothered and gave him a response he wasn’t expecting. “Thank you very much for your advice sir, but I’m here to stay. If that’s all, I would be heading to my office. Do call me when you are ready to let me do my job” With that I went back to my office spending hours waiting for a call or mail from him, but nothing from him. Just as I was about to get up for lunch at 1 pm. The landline rang out. Now he decides to call. I roll my eyes “Mia Warren on the line” I greeted “My office, now,” Alexander instructed Of all the times that he could have called, he had to be during lunch hour when my stomach was rumbling for food. Alexander barely acknowledged my presence as I stood before him. Instead, he went straight to the point. He began to list a series of tasks and expectations. “I’ve sent you a contact pdf. I need you to send them an invitation for the opening gala of the new branch. Send a mail to Ashley to invite staff. Pick up the list of my expected meetings and appointments for the month from Maria and work on my itinerary for the rest of the week before the end of the day. order flowers and have them sent to the location I sent to your mail” he commanded with authority and left me slightly overwhelmed with the length of task I had before me. It was a good thing I walked into his office with a pen and notebook. It was past 3 and so far I’ve managed to get the light task out of the way, which was the mail to Kelly and the flower delivery to a certain Sylvia Andrew, since my boss wasn’t so particular about the type of flowers I just had the vendor send colorful daisies since they were my absolute favorite. I had just finished working on Alexander's itinerary when I heard a knock on the door. It was Maria. “Hi,” she peeped her head in “May I?” She said asking if she could come in “Sure, please do” I encouraged her in “I noticed you didn’t step out for lunch and figured you might be busy,” she said, passing me a paper bag “so I picked up lunch for you from the cafeteria. Hope you like Mac and cheese” she smiled “Wow, that’s so thoughtful Maria. Thank you so much. Are we allowed to eat in the office though?” I said to her “You’re welcome, dear. And yes you can, as long as you don’t make a mess and you dispose of the leftovers properly” she stated “Well I have to head back to my desk now, there is water in your fridge if you're thirsty” “Thank you, Maria,” I say to her again before she leaves. Thinking I could get some work done before I ate, I opened the contact pdf of the invitees to the gala and I saw 200 recipients so I had to send individual personalized mail to them. I shake my head and realize I need food in my system before I can tackle that. The paper bag had Mac and cheese served with salmon and I didn’t think twice before digging into the meal.
