Chapter 4: Unfiltered Views

The neon sign of the convenience store across the street flickered continuously through the light rain, casting a cool blue glow onto the wet asphalt. Inside his parked car a few blocks away from L'Aurore, William Montenegro sat in the driver's seat with the engine idling. It was eight-thirty in the evening. His shift as head chef had ended over an hour ago, yet he hadn't driven home to his quiet apartment. Instead, his hands rested loosely on the steering wheel while his mind kept drifting back to the pantry incident earlier that afternoon. He couldn't shake the image of Cassandra collapsing into his arms—how impossibly light she felt, how drain of color her face had been, and how her hand had trembled as she held that water bottle. He had managed kitchens in high-stress environments for years, dealing with all kinds of eccentric personalities, but Cassandra Santiago remained a complete puzzle. She worked with a fierce, almost desperate intensity during her morning shifts, yet she carried herself as if she didn't have a single care in the world. William pulled out his smartphone, intending to check his emails for kitchen supply invoices. As he unlocked the screen, a notification popped up from a social media app his younger sister had insisted on installing on his phone weeks ago. He was about to swipe it away when a suggested live video banner caught his eye. The thumbnail featured a woman wearing a bright yellow shirt, holding up a sleek glass bottle with a dazzling, wide grin. It was Cassandra. William froze, his thumb hovering over the glass screen. He blinked, staring at the small preview window. The caption beneath read: LIVE: Glow & Grace Cosmetics - Midweek Mega Sale with Host Cass! Curiosity overcame his usual preference for privacy. He tapped the notification. The screen expanded, instantly filling his quiet car with bright, high-energy music and the familiar, vibrant voice of L'Aurore's most stubborn server. "If you're just tuning in, welcome, welcome, welcome!" Cassandra's voice bubbled through the car speakers. She was sitting in what looked like a modest, small living room. A bright ring light reflected neatly in her wide brown eyes. "We have fifty sets left of our Hydra-Glow Serum! Guys, I'm telling you, if you survived a long, crazy workday like I did, this is your holy grail!" William sat back in his seat, utterly stunned. On screen, Cassandra was a powerhouse of charismatic salesmanship. She applied the serum to the back of her hand, turning it toward the camera lens to show off the glossy shine. She read comments sliding up the left side of the screen at lightning speed, addressing viewers by their usernames, laughing effortlessly at their jokes, and singing short, silly jingles every time a product batch sold out. The viewer count in the top corner read over three thousand people. She works a second job? William thought, his brows knitting together tightly. He glanced at his dashboard clock. It was nearly nine o'clock. She had finished her grueling eight-hour shift at the restaurant at three in the afternoon, and here she was, standing—or sitting—under blistering studio lights, performing for thousands of strangers online. As he watched, William began to notice the subtle details that the three thousand cheering viewers in the chat were completely blind to. He noticed the tiny, telltale twitch in her left eyelid whenever she leaned closer to read the screen—a clear sign of severe eye strain. He noticed how her right hand, holding the cosmetic bottles, subtly avoided using her injured forearm as leverage. He saw how, during the three-second transitions when she looked down to grab a new product from the table, her smiling face completely slackened into raw, sheer exhaustion, only to instantly snap back into a dazzling, energetic grin the second her eyes met the camera lens again. It wasn't just a side hustle. She was pushing her physical boundaries to the absolute limit. "Alright, my lovely Glow Crew!" Cassandra beamed on screen, holding up a tube of pink lip balm. "Next up, we have our matte tint in 'Sunset Rose'! Click that orange basket before it sells out!" William watched silently for another twenty minutes. A heavy, unfamiliar knot formed in his chest—a mixture of profound respect and deep, aching frustration. He couldn't fathom what kind of heavy financial burden or personal circumstance drove a twenty-one-year-old girl to work sixteen hours a day, burning the candle at both ends without a single moment to rest. Slowly, his fingers moved across the phone screen. Without fully realizing what he was doing, William created a basic profile on the app, leaving the default username intact. He tapped the orange basket icon on the bottom of the screen. He selected five of the most expensive skincare sets listed on her product showcase, entered his credit card details, and hit Confirm Purchase. A second later, a loud, automated chime echoed from Cassandra's live stream. A bright graphic flashed across her screen: [User_90214 HAS PURCHASED 5x ULTIMATE RADIANCE SETS!] Cassandra's eyes widened on screen, her mouth dropping open in genuine, unscripted shock. "Wait—what?! User_90214?! Five Ultimate Sets in one go?! Are you serious?!" She clapped her hands together, a burst of real, unpolished laughter escaping her lips. "Thank you so much, User_90214! Wherever you are, you just made my entire night! May your skin be forever glowing and your life be blessed!" Inside his dark car, William watched her genuine, radiant laugh fill the small phone screen. A very subtle, rare smile tugged at the corner of his own lips, disappearing almost as quickly as it had appeared. He locked his phone, tossed it onto the passenger seat, and finally put his car into gear, driving off into the rainy night. The next morning at L'Aurore, the kitchen was already buzzing with preparations for the Friday lunch crowd. Cassandra stepped through the service doors at seven-fifteen sharp, her hair pulled back into her usual neat ponytail. She looked visibly rested compared to yesterday—no doubt bolstered by the massive sales commission she had pulled in from last night's stream, including the mysterious big spender who had cleared out her top-tier stock. She walked straight to the espresso machine near the server station to pour herself a cup of black coffee. "Morning, Santiago." Cassandra jumped slightly, turning around to find William standing right beside the coffee station. He was dressed in his pristine white chef's coat, holding a small, insulated silver thermos in his hand. "Good morning, Chef!" Cassandra replied, her bright customer-service smile instantly snapping into place. "You startled me. You walk really quietly for a guy who wears heavy kitchen boots." William ignored the joke. Without saying a word, he set the silver thermos down on the wooden counter right in front of her. Cassandra looked down at the thermos, then up at his sharp, unreadable face. "What's this? Did someone leave their water bottle in the kitchen?" "It's high-grade bone broth with slow-roasted chicken and ginseng," William said evenly, resting one hand on his hip. "I made a batch during morning prep." Cassandra blinked, her eyebrows rising in confusion. "Okay... and you're showing it to me because...?" "Because it's for you," William said, his voice quiet but firm. "Drink all of it before the eleven o'clock rush." Cassandra stared at him, utterly dumbfounded. "For me? Chef, I didn't order any broth. Plus, I can't afford whatever fancy five-star ingredient stuff you put in here." William let out a small, quiet exhale through his nose, his dark eyes locking onto hers with intense seriousness. "It's not on the bill, Santiago. It's for your recovery. You look slightly less like a ghost today, but your body still needs proper nutrients, not just black coffee and cheap sandwiches." Cassandra opened her mouth to shoot back a sarcastic reply, but the sheer sincerity in his gaze stopped the words in her throat. Her heart gave an unfamiliar, strange flutter against her ribs. She looked at the polished silver thermos, feeling the faint warmth radiating through the metal. "Chef..." she said softly, her playful defensive wall dropping for a second time in two days. "You really don't have to do this. I'm fine, honestly." "I don't do things I don't want to do, Santiago," William replied coldly, though the soft tone in his eyes contradicted his harsh words. He stepped closer, leaning down slightly so only she could hear his next words over the ambient kitchen noise. "And if I find out you threw it away or gave it to someone else, I will make you scrub the entire prep station by hand." Before Cassandra could respond, William turned on his heel and strode back into the main kitchen, leaving her standing alone by the coffee machine holding the warm silver thermos in her hands. She gently unscrewed the top lid. The rich, savory aroma of slow-simmered chicken, fresh herbs, and warm ginger wafted up, filling her senses. It smelled delicious, comforting, and deeply nourishing. Cassandra brought the thermos to her lips and took a small sip. The warm liquid instantly settled in her stomach, spreading a gentle heat throughout her tired body. She looked toward the kitchen line through the small round glass window of the double doors. William was standing by the stove, flipping a pan with practiced, graceful ease, looking every bit the stern, uncompromising head chef. A small, soft smile spread across Cassandra's face—a real, quiet smile that had nothing to do with her server job or her online streams. "You really are something else, Chef William," she whispered into the empty hallway, holding the warm thermos close to her chest.
