Chapter Four : The Man In the Black Suit

1209 Words
I didn’t know how long I sat in the car. The black sedan was gone, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that someone had been watching me. I looked down at the divorce papers again. My hands were no longer trembling. Something had changed. Yesterday, I had been a wife desperately trying to save her marriage. Today, I was a woman trying to understand why everyone around her had been keeping secrets. My phone rang. I glanced at the screen. Dad. I let it ring. I wasn’t ready to hear another explanation that wasn’t really an explanation. Instead, I started the car. I needed somewhere quiet to think. There was only one place that came to mind. The Sterling Group. I almost laughed at myself. Why would I go back there after everything that had happened? Because I needed answers. And Damian was the only person who could give them to me. At least, that was what I thought. When I arrived at the company, the receptionist stood immediately. “Mrs. Sterling.” “I’m here to see Damian.” She hesitated. “Mr. Sterling is in a meeting.” “Tell him I’m here.” She picked up the phone. I waited. A few seconds later, she lowered it. “He said you should wait upstairs.” I nodded. I took the elevator to the executive floor. The moment the doors opened, I noticed how quiet it was. Too quiet. Damian’s assistant wasn’t at her desk. I walked toward his office. Before I could reach the door, I heard voices coming from the conference room. One of them belonged to Damian. The other was unfamiliar. I stopped. “She knows about the divorce papers,” Damian said. My heart tightened. I moved closer. “That wasn’t supposed to happen yet,” the other man replied. I recognized the voice. It was deep and calm. “Then handle it,” Damian said. “She won’t cooperate if she starts asking questions.” “She doesn’t know enough to cause a problem.” I covered my mouth. They were talking about me. I stepped backward. The conference room door suddenly opened. I froze. A man walked out. He was tall. Very tall. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, his dark hair neatly pushed back, and his expression was completely unreadable. His eyes met mine. Cold gray eyes. For a moment, neither of us spoke. I had never seen him this close before. But I knew exactly who he was. Alexander Blackwood. Damian’s greatest enemy. The man from the warning on the divorce papers. The man my husband had told me not to trust. Alexander’s gaze moved briefly to the papers in my hand before returning to my face. “You shouldn’t be here.” His voice was calm. I straightened. “I could say the same about you.” One corner of his mouth lifted slightly. “Could you?” I didn’t like the way he looked at me. Not because he was intimidating. Because it felt like he knew something. Something I didn’t. “How long have you known me?” I asked. His expression didn’t change. “I’ve never met you before today.” “Then why were you talking about me?” His eyes remained fixed on mine. “Because you’re Damian Sterling’s wife.” “Not for much longer.” His gaze dropped to the papers again. “Apparently not.” I tightened my grip. “You knew about the divorce.” “I knew it was coming.” “When?” “Months ago.” My stomach turned. Months. Another person who had known. “Everyone seems to know things about my marriage except me.” Alexander said nothing. I stepped closer. “Did you know Damian was cheating?” His jaw tightened slightly. “Yes.” The answer came without hesitation. My chest tightened. “And you didn’t tell me?” “I had no reason to.” I stared at him. “That’s your excuse?” “It’s not an excuse.” “Then what is it?” “The truth.” I hated how calm he was. Everyone else had given me excuses. Alexander simply gave me answers. Even when I didn’t like them. “Why does Damian hate you?” Something flickered in his eyes. “Ask him.” “I did.” “And?” “He refused to tell me.” Alexander glanced toward the conference room. “Of course he did.” “What does that mean?” He stepped closer. Close enough that I could see the faint scar near his eyebrow. “It means your husband has been lying to you for longer than you realize.” My heart pounded. “What exactly has he been lying about?” Alexander looked at me for several seconds. Then his expression hardened. “Your marriage.” I swallowed. “I already know my marriage was a lie.” “No.” His voice dropped. “You know your husband didn’t love you.” I stared at him. “There’s a difference.” He turned away. I followed him. “What difference?” He stopped near the elevator. “You still think your marriage was about business.” I frowned. “Wasn’t it?” Alexander looked at me. “Partly.” The elevator doors opened. He stepped inside. I followed without thinking. “Then tell me the rest.” He pressed the button for the lobby. “Why should I?” “Because you seem to know everything.” “I don’t.” “You know more than I do.” “That isn’t difficult.” I glared at him. For the first time, amusement appeared in his eyes. It disappeared almost immediately. “You should go home, Amelia.” I froze. “How do you know my name?” He looked at me. “I know many things about you.” The elevator doors opened. He walked out. I remained frozen inside. “Wait.” He stopped. I stepped out after him. “Who are you really?” Alexander turned around. “I told you.” “You’re Alexander Blackwood.” “Yes.” “Then why do I feel like we’ve met before?” His expression changed. Only for a second. Then it was gone. “You haven’t.” He walked away. I watched him disappear through the lobby doors. My heart was beating too fast. I looked down at the divorce papers. The handwritten warning suddenly made sense. Do not trust Alexander. But the question that frightened me most was not whether I could trust him. It was why Damian was so afraid of him. I walked outside. A black car was waiting at the curb. Alexander got into the back seat. Before the door closed, he looked through the window and met my eyes. There was something in his expression I couldn’t understand. Not pity. Not anger. Something else. The car pulled away. I stood there watching it disappear. My phone vibrated. Another unknown number. I opened the message. You just met the man who destroyed your husband’s family. I stared at the screen. A second message appeared. And now he’s coming for yours.
