For several seconds, nobody moved.
Kael's Alpha ring rested on the stone floor between them.
Aria stared at it.
Then at him.
“You can't give up your pack for me.”
Kael's gaze remained steady.
“I just did.”
Lucian laughed.
“How touching.”
His grip tightened around Aria's arm.
“But foolish.”
Kael's eyes hardened.
“You have what you asked for. Release her.”
Lucian looked at the ring.
“You think a piece of metal makes someone Alpha?”
“You wanted my position.”
“I want your power.”
Kael's expression changed.
Aria understood immediately.
“This was never a bargain.”
“No,” Lucian said.
“You were never going to release me.”
“Now you're learning.”
Lucian pulled her backward.
Kael stepped forward.
“Don't.”
Lucian reached inside his coat.
Aria reacted first.
She drove her elbow backward and twisted free.
Lucian grabbed for her.
She ducked.
“Kael!”
He moved instantly.
Darius and the others rushed through the entrance behind him.
Lucian's wolves appeared from the corridors.
Chaos erupted.
Aria ran toward Kael.
He caught her around the waist.
For one brief moment, everything else disappeared.
“You came.”
Kael touched her face.
“Always.”
Her chest tightened.
“You surrendered your title.”
“It was a ring.”
“You know it's more than that.”
“Then we'll argue about it later.”
Despite everything, she laughed.
Kael stared at her as though the sound was something precious.
Then Lucian's voice echoed across the hall.
“Enough!”
Everyone stopped.
Lucian stood at the top of the staircase.
Beside him was Finn.
The young guard looked terrified.
Lucian held a silver vial.
Aria recognized it immediately.
Moonbane.
“Again?” Kael muttered.
Lucian smiled.
“The first dose weakened your bond.”
He lifted the vial.
“The second will end it permanently.”
Aria stepped forward.
“And then what?”
“You become free of him.”
“I don't want to be.”
Silence.
Kael looked at her.
Lucian's expression darkened.
“You don't know what you're saying.”
“I know exactly what I'm saying.”
Aria turned toward Kael.
Six years ago, she had built her life around hatred.
Days ago, she had entered Shadowfang territory believing Kael was responsible for everything she had lost.
Now she knew the truth.
More importantly, she knew him.
“Kael.”
He stepped toward her.
“The bond brought us together,” she said. “But it didn't make you stay beside me when it weakened.”
His expression softened.
“It didn't make you protect my mother.”
She moved closer.
“It didn't make you bring your warriors to save my people.”
“Aria…”
“And it didn't make you give up everything for me.”
Kael stared at her.
“No.”
Her eyes burned with emotion.
“So I don't care whether the bond survives.”
Lucian's face changed.
Aria reached for Kael's hand.
“I choose you.”
Kael went completely still.
The room seemed to disappear around them.
“You're certain?” he asked quietly.
Aria smiled through her tears.
“For an Alpha, you ask too many questions.”
His mouth curved.
Then he pulled her into his arms.
The moment their bodies touched, warmth exploded through Aria's chest.
She gasped.
Kael froze.
The mate bond surged.
Stronger than before.
Aria could feel him again.
His wolf.
His emotions.
His love.
Kael's eyes widened.
“Aria.”
“I feel you.”
Lucian stared at them.
“No.”
The warmth continued spreading.
Evelyne's words returned to Aria.
The bond connected more than two wolves.
It represented two bloodlines.
Two packs.
But now Aria understood something Lucian hadn't.
It could not be controlled by force.
It required choice.
Kael pressed his forehead against hers.
“I choose you too.”
The bond pulsed.
Lucian shouted.
“No!”
He threw the vial.
Finn suddenly grabbed his arm.
The vial flew sideways.
It shattered harmlessly against the wall.
Lucian turned furiously.
“You traitor!”
Finn backed away.
“You lied to us too.”
Lucian moved toward him.
Kael stepped between them.
“It's over.”
Lucian looked around.
Shadowfang warriors filled one side of the hall.
Silvercrest filled the other.
His own wolves hesitated.
Lucian's power had always depended on division.
Now the packs stood together.
“Look at you,” Lucian said to Kael. “You surrendered your title for her.”
Kael glanced at the ring on the floor.
Then Darius picked it up.
He walked toward Kael.
Darius held out the ring.
“You cannot surrender something that was never Lucian's to claim.”
Kael looked at him.
Darius lowered his head.
“My Alpha.”
Shadowfang warriors followed.
Then something unexpected happened.
Tomas stepped forward.
The Silvercrest leader looked at Kael for a long moment.
“You came for Rowan's daughter.”
Kael nodded.
“You defended our people.”
“Yes.”
“And you were willing to lose your own pack rather than abandon her.”
Kael looked at Aria.
“Yes.”
Tomas lowered his head.
Not submission.
Respect.
Silvercrest warriors did the same.
Lucian stared around him.
His expression twisted with rage.
“This isn't finished.”
Aria stepped beside Kael.
“Yes, it is.”
Lucian smiled coldly.
“You still think this is about your mate?”
“What else?”
“Your father.”
Aria froze.
Lucian saw the reaction.
“You know I caused Silvercrest's fall.”
Her fingers tightened around Kael's hand.
“But you still don't know why Rowan was targeted first.”
“My father opposed you.”
“Partly.”
Lucian reached inside his coat.
Kael immediately moved.
“Wait,” Aria said.
Lucian withdrew a folded document.
He threw it across the floor.
It stopped near Aria's feet.
“What is that?”
“Your father's final agreement with Shadowfang.”
Aria picked it up.
Two signatures appeared at the bottom.
Rowan Vale.
And Kael's father.
Her eyes moved across the document.
Her stomach tightened.
The agreement wasn't merely an alliance.
It proposed reunification.
Silvercrest and Shadowfang would become one territory again.
Two Alphas governing together until their successors took over.
Aria looked at Kael.
“Our fathers were already trying to reunite the packs.”
“Yes,” Lucian said.
“And I couldn't allow it.”
“Because you wanted control.”
“Because your father planned to expose me.”
Aria lowered the document.
“Expose what?”
Lucian smiled.
“The reason I knew so much about Silvercrest.”
Evelyne suddenly stepped forward.
“Don't.”
Aria looked at her mother.
“Mama?”
Evelyne's face had gone pale.
Lucian laughed.
“She never told you?”
“Told me what?”
Her mother remained silent.
Aria's heartbeat accelerated.
“Tell me.”
Evelyne closed her eyes.
When she opened them, tears filled them.
“Lucian wasn't merely your father's enemy.”
Aria frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Lucian answered for her.
“Before Rowan became Alpha, your mother was promised to someone else.”
Kael stiffened.
Aria stared at Lucian.
“No.”
Lucian smiled.
“To me.”
The room went silent.
Aria looked at her mother.
“Is that true?”
Evelyne nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Lucian's expression became bitter.
“Then she chose Rowan.”
Aria finally understood.
This hadn't begun with territory.
Or ancient bloodlines.
Or power.
Those things came later.
At the beginning had been something much simpler.
Resentment.
“You destroyed two packs because my mother chose my father?”
Lucian's eyes became cold.
“Your father took everything that should have been mine.”
Evelyne stepped forward.
“I was never yours.”
Lucian's face twisted.
Kael moved protectively toward Aria.
But Lucian suddenly smiled.
“Perhaps.”
His gaze settled on Aria.
“But Rowan left behind something far more valuable.”
Kael's wolf surged inside him.
Lucian backed toward the open passage.
“You'll never control her,” Kael said.
Lucian laughed.
“I don't need to.”
He disappeared into the darkness.
Darius immediately moved after him.
Kael raised a hand.
“Wait.”
Aria looked at him.
“Why are we letting him escape?”
Kael stared toward the passage.
“Because that's what he wants.”
A deep rumbling suddenly came from beneath their feet.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Aria's eyes widened.
“What is that?”
Kael grabbed her.
“Everyone out!”
The fortress shook violently.
Lucian hadn't been retreating.
He had been buying time.
And the entire mountain was beginning to collapse.
