Matt held the ring and pulled on the ribbon. It came undone and the band slid into his hand. Sarah watched in shocked silence, unable to move. Holding the ring in his fingers, Matt took a deep breath and looked into her eyes.
“Sarah, I love you so very much. You are the best friend I’ve ever had. You’re beautiful and smart, and sometimes I wonder why you even put up with me. But I love you and I need you.”
Glancing down, he slipped the ring on her finger, his hands trembling. “And I was wondering,” Matt said, trying to keep his voice steady, “if you’d be willing to spend your life with me?”
The words out at last, Matt dared to raise his eyes. Sarah continued to stare at the ring on her finger. He waited for her to speak, praying it would be what he wanted to hear.
