I fell in love with you then

~Melon~ The slamming of the door was an indication that Richard had gone. I felt the whole of my body tremble as I sank into the couch. His words still rang in my head like a morning alarm. I knew he meant it when he said he would protect me , but everything he said terrified me even more. My eyes shifted at the man the beside me . His eyes didn't intimidate me at all. I swallowed hard, then turning towards him. “Who ...who are you?''I whispered, voice cracking. My hands shook as I pressed the papers to my chest as though they were armor. He stepped closer . His steps were careful and deliberate as he narrowed the distance between us. “Shh...it's Okay. You are safe now.” I stared right in his eyes .There was so much promise and care written in them. They were so warm. I would see it right away . A smile of assurance was written on his face. It warmed my face.It was brief, but had such much effect on me. It was very hard to deny it. His had lifted and settled on my cheek, caressing it with a calm certainty. It was a touch of assurance. His way of telling me he was right there . My eyes drifted down and settled on his lips. I swallowed hard anticipating at the fact of having those lips on mine , once again. I knew it was very wrong ..but I would not help it. Despite my husband cheating on me , we were still legally married. So if I did anything like this , it would mean I was the one cheating now. “Who...are you?” I asked, again. This time firmer to show him how serious i was..I wanted to break this mystery once and for all. My life was already shattered more than necessary. I didn’t want it to get any more complicated than it already was. He stepped closer again, closer than before, but not in a threatening way. His presence felt intense, consuming, almost familiar. My breath hitched as I watched him, unsure whether to step back or hold still. I knew it was completely wrong to behave this way , more so when I was a married woman .And one who had serious marital strife at the moment. “I’m someone you know very well,” he said, his eyes never leaving mine. Someone I knew? That hit me straight to my bone. I searched my memory desperately, flipping through faces and years, but nothing connected. I shook my head slowly. “I… I don’t remember you.” That was the fact, I didn't know if any Scott in my memory, really. A smile formed on his face, soft, warm, and reaching all the way to his eyes. Just that small expression lit up the entire room, easing the storm inside my chest for a moment. He had that smile everyone needed. He continued staring at me, his gaze steady and strangely comforting. “I’m someone who has known you for the last nine to ten years,” he said quietly. My eyes widened. “Ten years?” I whispered. “How is that even possible?” He tilted his head slightly, watching my reaction closely. “You seem shocked,” he murmured. “I expected you would be.” My heart thudded. “Just tell me… who are you?” He took a breath, his eyes softening with something painfully tender. This made me much more curious than before. “My name is Scott,” he said. “Scott Caldwell.” The name didn’t hit me at first. It hovered, familiar yet distant..until he added, with a small, almost shy smile. “Your student. Nine years ago. The one who always sat in the front row… because I wanted to be close to you.” My breath caught.Image flashed in my Head.A quiet boy with sharp eyes. A worn notebook always open and ever so attentive in the literature classes. A soft voice answering questions no one else dared to. Those eyes, eyes that looked at me then the same way they were looking at me now. Those eyes that always had so much in that. Everything rushed back at once. “You’re… Scott?” I whispered, barely breathing. I would not believe it. He was one of the brightest and active students in my class that year. He nodded. “I never forgot you, Melon.” His voice softened, dropping into something deeper, more vulnerable. “You were the first person who ever believed in me. And I’ve cared about you ever since.” I stared at him as he spoke. My heart was thundering in my chest in anticipation of his words. “I was only seventeen then, but I fell in love with you.'' he added.
