The Beta’s Witness

668 Words
Dawn broke over the mountains in a wash of bruised lavender. It cast fractured shadows across the carpet of our gilded prison. The silence of the morning was shattered by an authoritative knock. The oak door swung open to reveal Harry Blake, the pack's Beta and Ethan's confidant. Harry always carried himself with a dangerous confidence. He usually dressed in tailored suits that reflected his precise nature. But the sight of me standing defensively near the four-poster bed eradicated his composure. His jaw slackened. His gaze darted from my face to the sleeping form of Leo tangled in the down quilts. For three years, Harry had been the only man in the territory who actively challenged Ethan's cruelty. Seeing the consequence of his Alpha's greatest mistake seemed to physically strike him. The scent of winter frost clinging to Harry's coat clashed with the territorial aroma of Ethan's cedar. It turned the atmosphere in the room into a tense battlefield. Ethan stepped between us, his broad shoulders tight as he attempted to wrangle the revelation into a diplomatic crisis. Instead of showing genuine remorse in front of his friend, he retreated behind the calculating mask of a ruler. He looked like a man negotiating a volatile border dispute. His resonant voice filled the spacious suite. He formally offered me a high-ranking position within the estate. He promised unimaginable wealth and security for our son. He spoke of newly furnished wings, elite tutors, and round-the-clock guards. He completely ignored the emotional chasm that still yawned between us. It was an insulting attempt to purchase my compliance. It was a bid to gloss over my shattered soul with gold and silk. Heat flooded my cheeks, and my fingernails dug half-moons into my palms at his arrogant assumption. My forgiveness could not simply be bought with a title and a guarded room. He was trying to command my loyalty instead of earning it. He proved he still did not understand the depth of the wound he had inflicted. I did not grace his political maneuver with a verbal response. I refused to let him dictate the terms of my existence a second time. Turning my back on both of the stunned men, I walked directly to the mahogany wardrobe. I began throwing my worn belongings back into my canvas bag. The metallic rasp of the zipper echoed like a gunshot in the tense silence. It was an unyielding rejection of his opulent bribes. Outside the frosted window panes, the howling blizzard was finally beginning to show signs of weakening. The whiteout was settling into a steady snowfall. I informed Ethan that the moment the main roads were slightly passable, we were leaving. I was taking my son and walking right back out of his territory forever. The commanding mask Ethan wore began to visibly melt. It was replaced by raw panic as he watched me methodically erase my presence from his suite. His hands clenched into tight fists at his sides. His knuckles turned stark white as his political leverage crumbled into dust. He finally understood that the titles and the wealth meant absolutely nothing. His dominance over thousands was useless against the woman holding the frayed straps of a canvas bag. The realization that I was genuinely prepared to walk away tore through his composure. It exposed the terrified mate hiding beneath the Alpha. He closed the distance between us with terrifying speed. He moved not with calculated grace, but with the wild desperation of a starving man losing his last meal. He stepped directly into my path. His heat-radiating frame completely blocked the only exit, trapping me against the wooden doorframe. His chest heaved with ragged breaths. His dark eyes burned with a possessive fire as he realized he was out of options. He leaned down until his lips brushed the shell of my ear. A guttural growl vibrated through his chest, and his words sent a cold shiver down my spine. "You aren't leaving this territory alive without me."
