I won't Marry Maxwell
“I will marry him.” she reminisced.
On reaching home, I tiptoed into the sitting room in order for the silent mansion not to be disturbed. Suddenly the lights switched on, everywhere was illuminated.
"Regina, where were you coming from?” my father's fierce voice emanated and I looked at him. I also spotted my mom beside him and they both looked at me suspiciously.
“Have you seemed to lose your words?” my father fired as he kept looking at me with his stern look while dingling the glass.
"Do you have a boyfriend?” my dad asked and he expected an honest reply.
I slightly nodded my head as I responded.
"What is his name?” My father's voice softened, and he had a little smile plastered on his face.
"Miguel,” I said, and I bowed my head, avoiding their gazes.
"He is the son of whom, dear? What's the name of his father's company? What is he based on?”
Mother's endless questions retorted right in my ears and I looked up at her with a sad smile plastered on my face. I was going to disappoint them right there.
I had always feared that, I had always dreaded the moment where I would tell my parents about my boyfriend. I swallowed nothing as I looked at them once again. My heart kept beating faster with every ticking second.
“I……….” I was about to answer those questions when my dad spoke up.
"I can't find anybody bearing Miguel out of the billionaire son's we have here on the platform, " my father said while looking me straight in the eyes to see my reaction.
At that moment, it was like the ground' should swallow me and magically make me disappear from my parents front.
"Have a sit Regina,” my father stretched his hands to a particular coach for me to settle down before him.
"Sit,” my mother added as a smile escaped her lips.
"Who is Miguel dear?” my father's voice rang in my ears. I wish this day never arrived. One day I had to sit right in front of my parents to face my biggest fear …
"Miguel is my boyfriend and I love him,” I hadn't even completed my sentence when my father asked.
“Is he a billionaire?”
"You want to marry the son of a nobody?” My father's voice echoed through the mansion. His stern voice came back as his soft voice slowly dispersed in the air.
“Miguel is my boyfriend and I'm happy being with him.”
"Shut the hell up, just shut it Regina. How dare you want to marry a totally useless person?”
My tears began to fall freely as I noticed my dad's stern face." Dad, I love him!”
“Shut up Regina. Shut the hell up,” he dropped the glass of whiskey on the bare glass and the fragile glass made me more scared.
"If you don't stop seeing that good for nothing boy, I will make your life a living hell,” my father's fierce voice retorted in the air as he fired back at me.
"Dad!" I yelled, “I love Miguel.”
"To hell with that stupid love,” my mom's angry voice fired back at me. She had been sitting quietly for some minutes as she continued to speak.
"Regina, don't cross the line," she said as her index finger was pointed to me. "If you do, if you cross the line, It won't be fun at all.”
"I didn't marry your dad, a poor man........” She paused while I let my tears flow freely beneath my chin.
“Buh………”
"No buts," I was about to speak when dad cut me off.
“Dad, mom,” I called out, looking at them.
“I love Miguel and I will get married to him. We both love each other and there's nothing both of you would do about that.” I said, walking towards the stairs before my dad blasted me with something shocking.
"We would disown you, Regina. I will forget the day you were born.”
For the facts my dad meant his words, he was a man of his word and I knew that for sure.
"We are the Maldives, one of the richest families in the whole of the city. If you are ready to pull out your family name in the mud…. "
I didn't bother hearing him finish his words as I ran upstairs. I couldn't hold the tears that were flowing down anymore.
********
The lights were flashing round my eyes as the paparazzi overed around. I had just walked into the VIP room where my parents had been waiting for a pretty long time.
As I stared at both of them keenly, I spotted my parents having a meeting with another family. They had a young man with them, though he looked so hairy I couldn't deny his handsomeness.
“Regina,” my mom called out as I looked in her direction.
"Come over here dear,” I slowly walked over to them as my face was still swollen from yesterday's cry.
I had cried the whole night as I couldn't leave Miguel for anything. The thought of my father disowning me was really heart aching.
"Meet your fiance, Maxwell,” their words took me out of my thoughts as I looked at my father in confusion.
I faced the gentleman who was seated right in front of me. He smiled gently as he stretched his hands for a handshake.
My hands were still folded beneath my breast and I just looked at the man with disgust in my eyes.
"Sure, I guess you are in the wrong place, Sir. The girl standing right in your front already has a ………"
"Regina,” my father barked at me as he looked at me with his eyes.
"I'm so sorry about that, Mr Maxwell. What would you like to take?”
He said motionlessly as he looked sternly at me.
"Nothing,” he later replied to Mom's sentence and I rolled my eyes as I responded.
"We would love to know if she likes our son and……”
"I don't….” I fired back at the woman who looked at me in shock.
“I don't f*****g like your son. To hell! Get lost! I have a boyfriend and I love him. Period …” I walked out of the room and a group of journalists covered me like bees.
“What the hell! How would they hold a press conference without my permission?”
****
"Oh no!”my mother cried out.“It's all over the news. Regina, what have you done?” She said dejectedly.
I looked at the television to confirm what she had said: the headline was, “Ms Regina Maldivi openly rejected Mr Maxwell, a very rich billionaire.”
My dad immediately switched off the television. It was clear he was pissed off.
"Regina, you are successfully on the road to destroy all I have carefully built,” he responded painfully.
"I don't care, I love Miguel!”
