Silas’s POV The glass doors that revolved slow and mechanical, with that self-conscious dignity that is never easy enough to be believable, swung behind me. It had all the same qualities as everything in this godforsaken city, being shiny on the outside and rotten on the inside. The office I had just left was inhabited by bloodthirsty business men in smooth silk and in smiles not borne out to the eyes. I had kissed all hands and worn all smiles, and sold the reputation of self-possession like gold and silver. I’d sealed the Langford-Ross merger, one of the most high-stakes tech acquisitions of the quarter and yet, walking out into the gritty New York dusk, all I felt was… nothing. No thrill. No high. Just the same old hollow emptiness of another victory that counts nothing. I
