Chapter 3; Kira’s POV

I wiped the moisture from my cheeks and stepped straight into the suite, holding my chin high despite the total destruction inside me. Damon and Marcus instantly went silent as I walked through the door. I caught the unmistakable look of empathy on Marcus’s face, contrasted sharply by the sheer hostility radiating from Damon. Damon towered behind his mahogany desk, looking every bit the dominant Alpha. He remained the most breathlessly handsome man I had ever laid eyes on. With his artfully messy dark hair, intense emerald gaze, broad shoulders, and sculpted jawline, he had captured my heart without even trying. There was a time when looking at him made my pulse race. I used to ache for a single glance, desperate to feel loved by him. Now... none of that mattered anymore. Nora’s survival was infinitely more critical than a man who had never spared either of us a drop of affection. It pierced me deeply, yes. But I forced the ache aside. The only thing that mattered right now was ensuring Damon granted Nora her fondest—and likely final—desire. My gaze settled on the crisp document resting on the desk, and I reached out to grab it without hesitation. “I assume this is the severance contract,” I murmured under my breath. Damon gave a stern nod of confirmation. Scanning through the clauses, I let out a low hum. “Everything appears to be in order. Nora is waiting at home; your duty as an attentive father begins tonight. Once her birthday has passed, I will sign this agreement and finalize our separation,” I stated in a flat tone, pivoting to take my leave. Damon knit his brows in mild astonishment at my distant demeanor. I hadn't displayed an ounce of distress or protest like he had anticipated. He opened his mouth to speak, but at that moment, Seraphina sauntered inside as if she owned the place. In an instant, every thought of my presence dissolved from his mind, and his sharp features softened. A genuine smile touched his lips as he rose to welcome her. “Hey there,” he greeted her gently. I couldn't help but glance back at Damon. He bore no resemblance to the cold, harsh individual he always was around me. He radiated warmth and joy. Seraphina tossed her golden locks, her icy blue eyes flashing with malice the moment she spotted me. “Oh, Dam—Alpha,” she cooed softly. “Forgive me, I didn't realize you were occupied with your mate. I can return later.” Damon’s expression hardened slightly at her words. “Do not refer to her like that. I have told you repeatedly that she is not my mate.” Seraphina’s eyes sparkled with secret delight. She knew precisely what reaction her words would trigger. Marcus grimaced, offering me a look of sorrow. My hands balled into tight fists against the paperwork, a surge of humiliation washing over me. Damon turned back to me, his tone dropping several degrees. “You may depart. I will drop by for dinner.” I gave a silent nod and finally exited the room, tuning out Seraphina’s soft laughter as Damon whispered gently to her. Yet, all my shame and agony vanished the second I arrived home and broke the news to Nora. Nora’s face lit up with a massive smile. “For real? Daddy is actually joining us for dinner tonight?” she asked, hardly daring to believe her father would finally show up. She couldn't even recall the last time they had shared a meal at the same table. I couldn't stop a faint smile from forming at my child's pure delight. “Yes, sweetie. He’ll be here this evening.” Nora clapped her hands with a gasp, sprinting off toward her bedroom. “I’m going to put on my special dress! The yellow one with the butterflies!” I watched her run off, my chest tightening with pain. I reminded myself not to build expectations, but for Nora’s sake, I prayed Damon wouldn't let her down. That evening, I whipped up a simple yet delicious meal. Nora assisted by setting the table, arranging the cutlery and napkins with extreme care, determined to make everything flawless for her father. Every few minutes, she would scurry to the window to peer outside, asking, “Is he here yet?” Finally, a firm knock echoed through the door. Damon stood on the threshold, looking as distant and unreadable as ever. I offered no words to him, but Nora threw herself into his arms the instant she saw him. “Daddy!” Damon looked momentarily taken aback. She hugged his waist tightly, and for a second, his hand hovered awkwardly in the air before he slowly settled it against her back. “Hello,” he mumbled. That single word was more than enough for Nora. She beamed with happiness. Dinner was extremely stiff. Damon barely spoke, hardly touching the food on his plate. I focused entirely on Nora, inquiring about her day, her playmates, and her sketches. Nora did almost all the talking, her excitement filling the dining room as she carried on a chatterbox conversation with Damon. At one point, Nora reached across the table and placed her tiny hand over Damon’s. “You’re actually here,” she whispered, as if checking that it wasn't a dream. “Will you come back again tomorrow?” Damon cleared his throat, muttering vaguely, “We will see.” Following dinner, I began clearing away the dirty dishes, but Nora tugged gently on Damon’s sleeve. “Daddy… will you come tuck me in tonight?” Damon paused. “Please?” she pleaded softly. “Just this once?” I froze near the counter, keeping my back turned as I waited for his answer. Damon let out a heavy sigh. “Very well.” Nora’s face lit up, and she pulled him along toward her bedroom. I lingered by the doorway, taking in the sight of my daughter’s joy. She babbled animatedly, showing him her artwork, her plush toys, and her favorite treasures. Sliding under the duvet, she looked up at him with sleepy eyes. “Will you stay here until I fall asleep?” Damon gave a silent nod, perching on the edge of the mattress. “Daddy?” she whispered after a moment. “Yes?” “I am your daughter… right?” He gave her a subtle nod. “You are.” Nora smiled sweetly. “Okay. Goodnight, Daddy.” She rolled over onto her side, drifting off into sleep with a gentle smile on her lips. Damon remained seated for a few minutes, watching her sleep. She had inherited his nose and his dark hair. But those vibrant eyes belonged entirely to me. His phone buzzed softly in his pocket. My heart sank. Watching Damon’s lips curve into a faint smile, I knew instantaneously that it was Seraphina. Damon stood up quietly, glancing down at Nora. She looked so tranquil, clutching her favorite plush rabbit tightly to her chest. His phone buzzed a second time. Damon set his jaw, slipping the phone back into his coat pocket. He bent down slowly, hesitating for a brief second, before leaning in to press a gentle kiss against Nora’s forehead. As he straightened back up, his eyes met mine standing quietly in the dim hallway, arms crossed, my expression unreadable. I had witnessed the entire interaction. Damon stiffened, his gaze darkening with sudden irritation. He brushed past me as though I were invisible. “Where are you headed?” I asked quietly as he made his way toward the main entrance. He halted, keeping his back turned toward me as he replied coldly, “I have an urgent matter to attend to.” I took a step closer, striving to keep my tone steady. “Nora will be devastated if she wakes up tomorrow and finds you gone.” “She asks me every night,” I murmured softly, “if you’re ever coming home. I come up with every excuse imaginable just to preserve your reputation and spare her heart. If you detest me as much as you claim, it shouldn't be so difficult to pretend you care about her—if only to be rid of me faster.” He didn't turn around. “I will return in the morning to drive her to school.” Without another word, he stepped out into the night and closed the door behind him. I stood completely frozen, staring into the vacant corridor, my soul burning with deep grief and anguish.
