The following two weeks passed in a blur of bittersweet routines and quiet agony.
True to his word, Damon kept showing up. Every afternoon, his SUV pulled up outside Nora’s academy, and every weekend, he dedicated a few hours to taking her out for ice cream, visiting the pack library, or watching her practice drawing.
To Nora, it was pure magic. Her laughter seemed louder, her eyes brighter, and for brief moments, she looked like any ordinary, healthy seven-year-old girl.
But behind her radiant smiles, the harsh truth was catching up to us.
The severe fevers returned with a vengeance, striking mostly in the dead of night. Nora was losing weight, her cheeks growing paler by the day. Each time she fell asleep, I would sit by her bedside for hours, pressing cool clothes to her forehead and crying silently in the dark.
Every night, I checked my phone, praying for a call from the pack clinic, desperate for any news about the experimental cancer treatment. But there was only silence.
Time was running out. Nora’s eighth birthday was only a week away.
On Wednesday afternoon, I sat in the living room sorting through Nora’s medical records when my phone rang. Seeing the clinic's number on the screen, my heart stopped.
I scrambled to answer it, my hands shaking so violently I almost dropped the device.
“Hello? Is there news?” I gasped out.
“Luna Kira,” the physician’s voice came through, sounding tense and breathless. “I need you to listen to me carefully. Our research team has just finalized the initial synthesis of the trial serum for the werewolf cancer. It has passed the baseline safety phase.”
A loud gasp escaped my lips, tears immediately flooding my eyes. “A cure? You found it?!”
“It is an experimental breakthrough, Luna,” he clarified cautiously. “It is not guaranteed, but it is her only chance. However, because of the rare ingredients required—specifically the refined Star-Lotus extract—the production cost for a single customized dose is astronomical. It requires immediate funding to be finalized in the lab.”
“How much?” I asked, my voice trembling.
He named a figure that made my blood run cold. It was far more money than I possessed in my personal account.
“If we receive the funds by tomorrow morning, we can administer the dose right before her birthday,” the physician added. “Otherwise, the window of opportunity will close.”
“I’ll get the money,” I said instantly, without a second thought. “I will bring it to you today.”
The moment I ended the call, I grabbed my coat and drove straight to the pack’s main administrative estate.
Damon was the Alpha. The pack’s emergency medical reserve fund was under his sole authority. One signature from him, and Nora’s life could be saved.
When I arrived at his office, Beta Jeremy tried to stop me with a panicked expression. “Luna Kira, wait! Alpha Damon is in an important meeting—”
I didn't care. I pushed past him and threw open the double doors of Damon’s office.
Inside, Damon was standing near his desk. Beside him stood Seraphina, holding a thick ledger.
Damon snapped his head toward me, his brow furrowed in immediate irritation. “Kira? What is the meaning of this intrusion? Can’t you see I’m busy?”
“Damon, please,” I choked out, running up to his desk, completely ignoring Seraphina’s presence. “I need your help. It’s about Nora. The clinic called—they have a breakthrough trial for her illness! They need funding right away to prepare the treatment!”
Damon’s expression hardened instantly, his eyes narrowing with icy contempt.
“You have no pride left, do you, Kira?”
Damon’s voice didn’t just cut through the tension in the room—it crushed what was left of my spirit into dust.
He didn’t even glance at the official clinic document crumpled in my trembling hands. He didn't check the physician’s signature, the pack medical seal, or the urgent red stamp indicating a life-or-death timeline. His green eyes remained fixed on me as I knelt on the cold hardwood, frozen in total, absolute disgust.
“Get up,” he commanded, his Alpha voice vibrating through the floorboards. It hit my inner wolf like a physical whip, forcing a low, involuntary whimper from deep inside my chest. “You think throwing yourself on the floor and pretending your daughter is at death’s door will make me hand over pack treasury reserves? You knew today was the deadline to finalize Chloe’s overseas care, and you showed up right on cue with a forged medical invoice.”
“It’s not forged!” I screamed, the raw scream ripping straight from my throat. Tears blurred my vision as I scrambled forward on my knees, reaching desperately for the hem of his coat. “Look at the seal, Damon! Call the physician right now! Ask him yourself! Nora has four weeks—no, she has days if her fever doesn't break! The Star-Lotus extract is ready in the lab, but they need the funding to finalize the synthesis by tomorrow morning!”
Damon stepped back sharply, his polished leather boot narrowly missing my fingers as if my touch were venomous.
Beside him, Seraphina let out a soft, delicate sigh. She reached over, her manicured fingers resting gently on Damon’s forearm. “Damon, please... don't be too hard on her,” she murmured in a silky, hushed tone that dripped with performative sympathy. “I understand why Luna Kira would feel threatened. Chloe’s treatment abroad is very costly, and it takes away from the main family’s allowance. If she feels she needs to invent an emergency to keep the funds within her household, maybe... maybe we should just postpone Chloe’s trip.”
The manipulation was so seamless, so sickeningly transparent, that my blood turned to ice.
Damon’s jaw clenched tightly. Seraphina’s faux selflessness only inflamed his fury toward me.
“We are not postponing anything, Seraphina,” Damon said, his tone softening for a brief second as he looked at her before turning back to me with pure, unadulterated venom. “Did you hear that, Kira? She is thinking of a child's health while you sit here playing mind games.”
He reached onto his desk, picked up the fountain pen, and uncapped it with a decisive click. Without a single second of hesitation, he brought the tip down on the ledger Seraphina had brought—the authorization form allocating the full emergency medical reserve to Chloe’s overseas travel.
Scratch. Scratch.
The sound of his signature echoing through the silent office felt like a blade sliding slowly between my ribs.
“No...” I whispered, the air entirely leaving my lungs. “Damon, no! Please, don't sign that! That is Nora’s only chance!”
He didn't even look at me. He closed the leather folder, slid it into Seraphina’s waiting hands, and met my gaze with eyes as cold as dead stone.
“The funds are officially allocated,” Damon stated flatly. “The pack treasury is closed for the remainder of the quarter. Your little performance ends now.”
He raised his voice slightly toward the open doors. “Jeremy!”
Beta Jeremy stepped into the office, his face pale and eyes downcast, completely unable to look me in the eye.
“Escort Kira off the administrative floor,” Damon ordered coldly. “If she steps foot near the treasury or my office again today, place her under house arrest until the dissolution papers are finalized.”
