I carried on speaking the moment Damon went quiet. “The diagnosis is advanced werewolf cancer, and the physician warned—”
Damon cut me off without letting me finish. “What kind of stunt is this, Kira? Are you honestly desperate enough to fabricate cancer just to drag me back to you?”
He had always convinced himself that I was concocting tricks to force him into accepting that we were true mates, ordained by the moon goddess.
For reasons I could never comprehend, Damon couldn't feel our soul bond. I felt its strength every single day—the static, the gravity, the unmistakable connection. Yet Damon maintained he felt absolute zero. I remained bewildered, unable to discern whether he was lying or if his heart was genuinely numb to it.
His disgust radiated through the line as a low growl tore from his throat.
“Stop seeking attention with such pathetic lies!” he barked, his words drenched in pure malice.
My jaw dropped. “Listen to me—”
Before I could utter another word, he snapped, “I told you straight out that I want our marriage dissolved. That is the sole topic I am willing to discuss with you. No more deceit, no more manipulative ploys. You are fully aware that Seraphina has returned.” His tone turned frigid.
My fingers gripped the phone tightly as I stared down at the medical papers in front of me.
It was pointless now. Damon had never wanted me, regardless of fate, and certainly not now with Seraphina back while Nora was running out of time.
There was no point in clinging to a union that had been dead from its inception. The only reason I had ever endured this battle was for Nora’s sake, and Nora was…
A wave of sobs broke from my chest, causing Damon to emit an irritated grunt.
“Kira!” he growled, convinced I was putting on an act to manipulate him.
“Fine!” I choked out through gritted teeth, wiping the tears from my face with a sharp stroke. “I will sign whichever divorce papers you want, but under one condition.”
Damon went dead silent. It was a complete shock to him; for years, I had fought tooth and nail against letting him walk away.
To hear me surrender so abruptly left him speechless. He cleared his throat. “State your condition.”
I swallowed back a sob. “Spend time with Nora until her birthday arrives. Attend her party, and be the affectionate father she deserves. That is my only request.”
Silence stretched across the line as he tried to figure out if it was a trick.
“Is that truly all?” he asked cautiously.
I gave a faint nod to the empty room. “Yes. That is all.”
He let out a heavy breath of relief. “Very well. Report to my office to collect the dissolution papers so you can review them, and when the day comes, you will sign.”
A bitter smile touched my lips. He already had the paperwork drawn up and waiting, as though he couldn't wait to eradicate my presence from his life.
Damon had harbored resentment toward me from the start, claiming I took advantage of him during his darkest hour. It had happened on the night his father passed away. He had been drowning in grief, intoxicated, and completely shattered—and I had offered him comfort. He never forgave himself for what took place between us that night, nor did he ever forgive me.
In his mind, I had exploited his emotional vulnerability to entrap him, and later used my pregnancy with Nora to secure a permanent title.
At that time, he was still holding out hope that Seraphina would come back to him. But his mother had forced Damon to make a deathbed promise that he would marry me instead.
Now that Seraphina was back, his resentment toward me had boiled into pure fury.
After ensuring Nora was comfortable and resting, I made my way to Damon’s office without delay.
Beta Jeremy met me with a sympathetic look as I approached the executive floor. “Whatever business you have, make it brief because Seraphina is due to arrive shortly,” he cautioned in a hushed voice.
I offered a tight, forced smile. “Don't worry, Jeremy. I’ve agreed to the divorce. None of this matters anymore—I am officially done begging to be loved.”
He looked as though he wanted to wrap me in a comforting embrace, but held back, offering an encouraging nod instead.
As I drew closer to the heavy wooden door, the sound of Damon’s voice drifted out into the corridor.
“Alpha Damon,” Gamma Marcus was saying, “tell me, now that Seraphina is back in the picture, what is your next move?”
Damon answered instantly. “I am going to rectify what I couldn't do years ago—I am going to make her mine. Right now, she has a young daughter, Chloe, and she is struggling immensely as a single mother. She requires all the support I can give her.”
I froze right outside the threshold, a sharp ache expanding in my chest as I listened.
“Is that so?” Marcus sounded astonished. “What about Kira? She also has a daughter—your child.”
Damon’s voice instantly turned stone-cold. “Do not speak the name of that deceitful, conniving woman in my presence again.”
I bit my bottom lip to stop the trembling. I had always known he despised my existence, but hearing him speak of me with such venom tore through whatever was left of my spirit.
“Woah... so you truly hold zero affection for her? Even after five years of marriage? And a seven-year-old daughter together?” Marcus pressed.
Damon sneered. “Affection? Every single day, I regret ever crossing paths with her, let alone putting a ring on her finger. My mother coerced me into it on her deathbed all because of Kira’s manipulations.”
He paused, his voice dropping into absolute certainty. “She revolts me. The only woman I have ever loved is Seraphina. Nothing will ever change that.”
A hot tear spilled down my cheek before I could catch it, as my internal wolf let out a painful, agonized wail within my chest.
