“Like what?” She said shoving her phone in her pocket.
“I don’t know, she won't tell me but she’s worried.” My voice started to shake. “And so is Nana.”
“Rayleigh I need you to listen to me okay?” She said holding my hands in hers. “Can you do something for me?”
She got really quiet as Atia’s maid walked in with tall glasses of pink lemonade on a platter.
“Hello.” She said walking past us and into the room.
“Hi.” I smiled.
“Can you?” She said continuing our conversation.
“Yes.” I nodded.
“Before you go to sleep put a notepad on your nightstand with a pen and anything your mom tells you that you feel is important – anything at all. You write it down when you first wake up that way you won’t forget and then bring it to me or Angel.” She explained.
“Okay.” I said confused.
“It’s really important, you could help with so much.” She said hugging me.
“Okay.” I hugged her back. “Well I have to go, Nana is awake.”
“That’s wonderful.” She smiled. “I have to go too.”
“Where?”
“Just to run some major errands.” She smiled.
“Oh okay.” I said staring at her.
She was up to something, but I didn’t want to bring it up. It was probably none of my business.
“Well we can walk out together then. Let's go say our goodbyes.” I said as I walked away.
“Actually” She said grabbing my hand. “Can you say them for me? I’m in a rush.” She smiled.
“Sure.” I said confused.
“Oh, can you tell Chrissy that if she wants a ride home that I’ll be in the car, but if not I’ll come get her later.” She said heading for the front door. “Bye I love you.” She blew me a kiss.
“Bye.” I waved.
I walked back in the room and everyone was drinking their lemonade.
“What happened Ray?” Chrissy said holding her empty glass in her hand.
“Nana’s awake.” I smiled excitedly.
Everyone cheered in excitement.
“Wait, where’s my mom?” Chrissy said looking around.
“Oh, she said she had to run important errands so I’m saying her goodbyes for her.” I smiled. “And for me too I guess.”
“What?” Chrissy said confused.
“Yeah, I don’t know but she said if you want a ride she’s in the car.” I walked over to the couch.
“Bye guys.” She said getting up. “Next time I want layer dip!” She smiled at the maid.
“I’ll make sure to get that.” Angel laughed.
She hugged everyone and fled.
“I guess it’s my turn.” I said reaching for a hug from Atia. “I’ll be back over later.” I promised her. “If that’s okay with you.” I turned to Angel.
“Of course it is.” She walked out the room with the empty tray. I think it was just to give us privacy.
“Bye.” I said frowning.
“Bye.” Atia frowned back. She stood to her feet and pulled me in for a hug.
I held her close I didn’t want to let her go.
“You guys know you can kiss right?” Ava giggled. "I'm not mom."
“So you wanna give her a show?” Atia said pressing her lips against mine.
We kissed passionately for a few seconds. It was exactly what I was waiting for all morning.
“Bye.” I said pulling away.
I walked over to Ava and gave her a hug. I felt Atia’s eyes on me the whole time.
“Rayleigh wait.” Ava said stopping me. “Do you mind if I go with you?”
“Come on." I took one last glance at Atia before we walked out.
“Bye, hurry back.” Atia yelled after us.
“Bye Mom.” Ava said as we walked out the front door.
“We gotta hurry.” I rushed to my car.
“Okay.” Ava said jumping in the car as fast as she could.
“Thanks for coming with me.” I said getting in the car.
“No problem.” She smiled at me.
“Lets go.” I said pulling out of the driveway. “We’re off to see Nana.”
We got to the hospital in less than 10 minutes. I let the valet park my car even though Nana always warned me not to. I couldn't help it. I was too excited to see her.
“What room is she in?” Ava asked as I pulled her down the hallway. I knew exactly where I was going.
“201.” I said smiling.
When we reached her room door I had to stop and let Ava catch her breath while I pretended to.
“Ray.” She whispered. “You know that you don’t have to pretend with me? I know you don’t get tired like that.” She smirked.
“Oh yeah.” I laughed and fixed my posture. “Ready?”
“Yeah.” She half smiled.
We walked in and two women were standing over her taking her vitals. One of them looked over at me.
“Look who’s here.” She smiled and exited the room.
“Nana.” I said as my eyes watered.
“Rayleigh.” She smiled at me.
“No talking.” The woman warned her. “Enjoy your visitation Yulissa.” She walked out with a empty IV bag.
“Hi Nana.” Ava said shyly.
“Hello beautiful.” She whispered to Ava. “Sit girls.” She made room for us at the end of her bed. I stared down at her burnt hands and fought my tears.
“Can I hug you?” I said walking over to her.
She nodded gracefully.
I wrapped my arms around her and the tears began to overflow.
“I thought you were gone.” I whispered in her ear.
“Never.” She whispered back. She held me as tight as she could. “I'll never leave you alone.”
“Promise?” I cried.
“I promise.” She held out her pinky so I could lock mine to hers.
It was all burnt up. I gently wrapped mine around hers and kissed them.
“Sit. Talk to me girls.” She said smiling.
“Don’t talk Nana. Just sign.” I said sitting on the bed next to Ava.
Nana knew sign language because my grandfather became deaf shortly after they met. He begged her to leave him, but she refused. She learned sign language shortly after. She taught my mother and her siblings, making them trilingual including Spanish. As well as myself, thanks to my mom.
She signed to me that she wanted to know everything she missed.
“She wants to know everything, should I tell her?” I whispered to Ava.
“No. Tell her the bare minimum she doesn’t need to stress that right now.” She whispered back.
‘Nothing much happened but how did this happen to you?” I said looking down.
“Candle fire.” She signed back. “It was my fault. I should have been more careful.” Her eyes watered.
“It was an accident!” I consoled her.
“My accident. I’m sorry Rayleigh.” She signed crying.
“What is she saying?” Ava asked confused.
“That it was a candle fire and it was her fault.” I whispered.
“Tell Ava I’m okay.” She glanced over at her.
“Ava, she said she’s okay.” I smiled at Ava.
“You had me worried.” Ava’s eyes watered.
“Sorry, never again.” Nana smiled at her and blew her a kiss.
“She said never again and she's sorry.” I looked at Ava.
“I’m going to go get water do you need anything?” Ava said standing up.
I think it was too much for her to handle right now.
“Water please.” I smiled.
“Okay.” She walked out. I waited to hear the sound of the door close before I spoke.
“Nana, please you don’t make accidents like this.” I cried.
“This time I did.” She frowned.
I stared down at her hands.
“Don’t worry about my hands. They’ll heal in time.” She signed.
I let my face fall in my hands and I began to cry uncontrollably.
“Rayleigh.” She whispered. “Come here.”
I climbed out the bed still crying and sat in the chair beside her. She looked over at me and smiled.
“Let it out.” She signed.
I grabbed her wounded hands and put my head down. I began to cry harder.
“I thought I lost you.” I said breathing deeply. “I can't believe this happened to you.”
I sat there with her hands in mine and cried until tears couldn’t come out anymore.
“Rayleigh.” Nana gasped.
“Yeah?” I said looking up at her.
“Look.” She held up her hands.
They were perfectly healed as if nothing was there. No scars or burns just light folds and wrinkles.
“You healed me.” She smiled.
“Nana, I’m so sorry I don’t know how that happened.” I cried.
“No, Rayleigh Shh.” She tried to calm me.
“It’s not my fault. I didn’t mean it. I don’t even know how I did it.” I said standing.
“I knew you could.” She signed. “You have my blood running through your veins I knew you would end up with some gift.”
“What do you mean?” I said sitting back down.
“You have the gift of healing the distress Rayleigh.” She smiled.
“So I just have powers?” I asked confused.
“Powers, gifts, whatever you want to call them they're blessings.” Her eyes watered.
Ava came back in with two waters and three nurses.
“Time to rest now.” A nurse said walking over to us.
“Wait, we’re not done talking.” I said standing.
“Well, she needs her rest you can visit her tomorrow.” She said smiling.
“No, I want to visit her now.” I protested.
“Rayleigh.” Nana whispered.
“But Nana.” I cried. “I just got here.”
She gave me that look and I knew to stop.
“Fine.” I said walking over to her and kissing her forehead.
She grabbed my face and kissed my cheek like she used to.
“Lets go Ava.” I said grabbing her hand.
“Bye Nana.” She said sadly as we walked out.
“What now?” Ava asked as we walked down the halls.
“Hey wait up Rayleigh.” A heard boy call after me.
“Yeah?” I turned around still holding hands with Ava.
“I just wanted to say you look good.” He ran up to us.
“Thanks.” I said as I glanced over at Ava.
“I was wondering if I could get your number.” He smiled.
“No, my sister already has that.” Ava stepped in front of me.
“Oh you are a lesbian.” He said sadly.
“Well what about you?” He asked winking at Ava.
“Yeah, I have a boyfriend he’s captain of the football team, and he would kick your a*s if you even breathe wrong by me.” She threatened.
“A lesbian and a taken girl. What a challenge.” He smirked.
“Is he bothering you girls?” Nana’s doctor walked up to us.
“Yes. Help us." Ava said stepping forward.
“Wrong move.” I said nudging her. “He’s a creep.”
“Oops.” She whispered.
“Get lost buddy or I’ll have you escorted off the premises.” He warned.
His body type and height alone was enough to scare him off. He turned around and ran the other way out the doors.
“Hey.” The doctor smiled at me. “You look prettier than you did yesterday.”
“Thanks.” I rolled my eyes.
He looked down at me and Ava’s hands and back up at me.
“Yes, we’re lesbians. This is my girlfriend.” Ava said as she kissed me on the cheek.
“Very convincing.” I chuckled.
“You know my late girlfriend was a lesbian. I think that’s just a challenge.” He smirked.
“And I think you’re just a creep. Goodbye.” Ava said pulling me away.
We walked out the door and ran to the valet desk. A man pulled up with my car within seconds.
“He was so weird.” Ava said as we got into the car.
“I told you.” I frowned.
“Where to now?” She smiled putting on her seatbelt.
“Home.” I smiled. “I mean to your house.” I caught myself.
“It’s your home too now.” Ava said rubbing my arm.
“Thanks.” I smiled at her.
